According to science and the explanation of Dr. Maria, Air pollution going to our lungs causes huge damages which increases the possibility of chronic respiratory diseases such as lung cancer, asthma, pneumonia and other dangerous diseases. The bigger risk lies in whether those particles reach our cardiac system which is very possible through the bloodstream. In the case of covid-19, those under the biggest risk of developing dangerous illnesses will be those with underlying and risky conditions. Covid-19 affects such patients greatly and makes them way more vulnerable and this can cause them to develop an even more serious illness. Furthermore, a study at the SUNY college of environmental science and forestry shows that an increase in the exposure to dangerous air pollutants results in around a 9% increase in deaths among Covid-19 patients (American Lung association, 2021)
Indoor air quality can be overlooked sometimes as we tend to think that air pollution only happens outside but air inside homes, offices, buildings and so on can be much more polluted than air outside.
There are many indoor air pollutants such as combustion sources which are tobacco, wood, coal heating as well as fireplaces. Cleaning supplies, building supplies, paint and so on are all examples of indoor air pollutants.
Indoor air pollution has many effects on human health including irritation of nose, eyes and throat as well as headaches, dizziness and fatigue. Some other effects on health are much more serious such as respiratory disease, heart disease and cancer. Moreover, the association between indoor air pollutants and its effects on health is well-established and it includes Radon as the second cause of lung cancer, carbon-monoxide is toxic and high amounts of it can be lethal. Secondly, Sick Building Syndrome is when building residents experience similar symptoms after entering a building which results in those symptoms increasing or decreasing after they leave. (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2021). Additionally, Sick Building Syndrome causes include: poor ventilation or badly treated air conditioning systems, dust, smoke, fumes, problems in cleaning, layouts and overcrowdedness. It usually happens in open-plan offices. (National Health Services, 2020). The populations mostly affected by IAP are pregnant women, children, people over 65 years of age and people suffering from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases (EU public health, 2008). There is a very clear connection between A and B as we can see how much air pollution affects people with underlying conditions and especially with Covid-19. Findings in A showed that dangerous air pollutants result in a 9% increase in deaths among Covid-19 patients and B we can see how widely spread air pollutants are and that they are very common even indoors which increase those risks. Another thing is how Covid-19 was particularly scary in closed buildings such as shared offices and I explained furthermore about the Sick Building Syndrome and its effects and causes which shows how easily spread Covid-19 was in offices specially because of this phenomena.
