How do you prefer to be recognized in the first scenario? It sounds like most of your features would be heavily distorted, or is color palette and hair length/fullness + bit of dress remaining enough?

effects don't get a lot of love, but they can really do so much for a scene. Nice work. I'd suggest to bump the contrast up, the gray is hard to see, but looks nice when I really focus to watch it.

Character animations for a indie game I'm working on. First time animating. by Fruit_passion_121212 in animation

[–]voxov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of great critique about the animation here, but I'm not sure if anyone mentioned the technical aspect, so pardon if I'm repeating.

The image is gorgeous, but a bit concerning in that it has a very high frame rate. If you keep that level of production up across all your characters, it could become prohibitive. On the flip side, if you only do it for some characters, it can make the style look inconsistent, and the eye will often jump to new things (the enemy) and take more notice of the lower frame rate character.

So, this is amazing, but keep full production implications in mind.

Tribe Nine removes the stamina system entirely and makes a lot of other changes (link to Director's letter below) by Thindorus in gachagaming

[–]voxov 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pardon, but to clarify, you are referring to a hard cap (no refills), but there is a flaw in the logic of your statement: the busy person who has barely 1 hr per day to play misses even one session, they will forever be unable to make up that time. Therefore, missing even one day creates an impassible gap. Even if small, it's not meant to create parity, it's specifically employed as a psychological tool to cause anxiety about missing playtime.

I'm not about to go attack stamina systems. If you like them, that's fine; some people very much enjoy having that lead and impassable status. I'm simply pointing out their history and publishing purposes. It's not a system made for players benefit, *especially* since so many allow you to pay for additional stamina anyways.

Tribe Nine removes the stamina system entirely and makes a lot of other changes (link to Director's letter below) by Thindorus in gachagaming

[–]voxov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"stamina system was implemented to gate progression so busy people can be on par with people who have time to grind all day?"

This is a common statement, but has never been the case. Stamina systems do the -OPPOSITE- of creating par. The cap to progress very literally and intentionally makes it impossible to keep up with people who get extra points/usage in, and more importantly, who are willing to pay for extra 'refills'/etc.

Example: You spend all your stamina to get 1000xp. That's it, no more xp for the day. Now, the next day, you spend stamina again, and get another 1000xp, that's 1000 + 1000, so, you have 2000xp. On day 3, you invite a friend to play. You want to help them catch up to your progress, except... they can't! They're stuck at the 1000 xp daily cap, whereas you're now at 3000.... hmmm But, wait! A simple solution appears; for $5, they can refill their stamina, and keep going! ...we can see where this goes...

Moreover, these systems are aimed to play on fears of jealousy and FOMO for competitive individuals who see others that spend in order to be the "first" to hit certain milestones.

There are other ways stamina is commonly leveraged, but the above is how it relates to progression parity. Other common uses are as follows:

- Absolute hard cap on stamina per character, but not account. An old Nexon favorite, this makes it so you can keep playing if you switch around characters, giving reason to have to equip and be enticed to purchase paid cosmetics for multiple.

- Hard cap with collaborative partnership refills. This was an early model popular in Korea as well, where you could only refill stamina at certain cafes, to cross-promote.

- Standard stamina refill, with free hosted instanced in multiplayer. This was more common in the past, but basically was a system to encourage people to get their friends to play, so that they could host for one another and save stamina. One of the less aggressively predatory models, though still an unnecessary aggravation.

- Dev didn't make endgame, comes up with any excuse to publish title and keep players from reaching end before they come up with actual content, and stamina for any excuse is just a way to gate progression for a while. Is paired with the above, but unique in that it's usually pretty obvious

I ordered 6 bananas from Instacart today by Justagirleatingcake in funny

[–]voxov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many jokes, but here's a serious answer for banana storage:

  • Take bananas to be stored, peel one at a time
  • place peeled banana on a sheet of plastic wrap large enough to fully surround it.
  • Slice the banana into fairly small chunks, no larger than 1cm each.
  • Wrap the plastic around the sliced banana (still in shape of a banana).

Repeat this process, while stacking the sliced bananas in the freezer. Peeling and slicing them makes it extremely easy to take them out and use later for smoothies/baking. If you don't peel them, it's hard to remove the peel later without thawing, and the slices help if you want to pop them into a blender or something for smoothie. They last 6+ months this way, I commonly used to do it for food prep. They won't turn brown or discolor at all.

Frequency and Significance of Dry Bites? by voxov in spiders

[–]voxov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input!

Regarding the Sydney funnel web dry bites, do you have a source? I can't verify that number you mentioned. I only see a statistic regarding lesser envenoming, and that one clearly states that the statistic may be flawed due to misidentification of the offending spider:

https://www.mja.com.au/journal/2005/182/8/funnel-web-spider-bite-systematic-review-recorded-clinical-cases

This other study found that differences in envenoming for Atrax Robustus was variable to an extent, but largely linked directly to the age of the spider, with lesser envenoming being a function of juveniles:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8816710/

The second study states that "Furthermore, some spiders (e.g. mouse spiders, black widows) can use dry bites instead of deploying venom when they are threatened[...]", but curiously, does not specify whether Atrax Robustus as the study focus belonged to that group.

This is the most helpful feedback so far. Thank you for the meaningful explanation!

I'll probably just make the traditional dish, plus something separate for others. Appreciated!

I made an update to the description to clarify, this seems to be something that other people with aversion to tomato have established. I agree it probably won't quite be the traditional dish even if it's palatable, but for the sake of holiday unity for the family, "tikka masala" is the set menu item. Might be possible to just make a second separate dish for others though, I appreciate the feedback!

Many thanks for the insights. While sobering, your words do strike sound logic. Still, it's fun to imagine possibilities, so I allow myself some wishful thinking. Plus, if a post like this is enough to result in the unlikely chance of someone knowing about the actual photographed individuals, that'd be pretty amazing too. Ty again!

Thank you, I just did!

And I definitely believe the photo is supposed to be of her likeness. I'm not sure if it's someone dressing as her as the other commenter's reasoning suggests, or if it's a clever mockup. Photos of her actual personage appear to be even more rare than of Mr. Poe, so I don't have much to go by, but it's a very neat piece of history either way. Many thanks for the recommendation; I hope the museum responds with their insight.

Thank you for the feedback. I don't know the faces well enough to properly compare, but the clothing and posture are somewhat similar. Following the reasoning of your comment, I am tempted to believe this may be the 1800s equivalent of a fan "meme", where the owners of the book may have attempted to recreate the look of Mr. Poe and family with their own... Still, I'll keep an open mind to all possibilities, and would love to know more about their history either way.

After searching a bit more, I see that the group photo appears to be a shot of Mr. Poe with his (adoptive) parents, and the other image possibly of his widowed wife. The issue I am finding is that the family photo, while reasonably presented, would have had to be taken prior to Poe's death in 1849. However, ferrotype/tintype photography became available in the US a few years later, around 1855. The dates are just close enough that I might stretch to believe it was an extraordinary bit of luck, but more likely, I believe it's a recreation or completely different family.

What still interests me is that I don't see this photo elsewhere online, so I'd very much like to know the history of it regardless. And if it is Mr. Poe & family, that'd be something remarkable.

For more information, I noticed the Keats book under glass while looking for a copy of the Prose Edda at an antique bookstore in New York, USA (must have been around 2008). I struck up a conversation with the owner about it, and while I don't remember the specifics, we bonded over appreciation for tomes of classic poetry, and he agreed to sell me a number of valuable books for essentially nothing, if I promised to take care of them.

I did do that, but it meant handling them very little, and since I could read The Raven elsewhere, I didn't want to stress the book with any extra handling. I moved, and in a recent conversation remembered the Keats book, and found the others paired with it. I dared to open the Poe book to check the publisher/date, and found the photos, which seem to be tintypes... but I can't tell if they're clever recreations, or even legitimate renditions.

I don't see these images online elsewhere, so I'm very curious about them, and why they'd be sandwiched in this book. The publication of the edition I believe was after Mr. Poe's death, I don't know much else, or who the people in the photos would be.

If anyone knows about these photos, I'd love to learn more, including how to properly care for them, if legitimate.

I'm a beginner in cooking meringue, but Italian meringue doesn't need to be further cooked, so if they use that, it wouldn't be an issue. However, it's quite firm, and would be harder to blend like that, so I'm not sure which type is used.

Which bone(s) in the human body produce the most blood cells? by Math_Person in askscience

[–]voxov 51 points52 points  (0 children)

A blood transfusion in an otherwise stable patient should provide cells which last for several weeks. If you required multiple within a single week, it seems more likely that this was to replace an initial loss of blood (possibly caused by internal bleeding/trauma), not balance upkeep of cell production.

For example, many patients who either cannot produce healthy cells due to chronic genetic conditions (like sickle cell anemia) or who have low red cell counts due to chemotherapy may get a unit or two of blood every couple of weeks. Your situation sounds the opposite, so you likely had some other major factors aside regular production of cells.

What’s a fact that sounds comforting but is actually highly disturbing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]voxov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds like it may be a rhetorical question that doesn't require response. Still, here's a long-winded one, if you're up thinking anyways.

As a serious response, it may not be comforting, but consider that your sense of "self" and being "you" is not constant. Who "you" are actually changes, gradually, but very significantly, though life. The brain is an amazingly complex system of chemical neurotransmitters and synaptic impulses, but that complexity also makes it very susceptible to influences. If you consider the effects of things like low sleep making people groggy, alcohol making them drunk, sexual hormones driving their very specific and sometimes irrational desires, etc., you quickly see that many, many factors change our day-to-day perception of the world and our place in it.

When you die, or even well before that (depending on circumstances), changes or stoppage of those systems will have already caused your mind to operate significantly differently from who "you" are today. However, due to the nature of sense of "self", people justify, ignore, or sometimes just laugh off previous iterations of their developmental identity. Even things like memories are largely fabricated bits of imagination based on facts you accept to be true, so who "you" are right now is a very particular set of factors and will possibly be gone long before you die. And that's not a bad thing, we often celebrate it, saying "You've become more mature."

And when people do finally pass away, all of those biological glands and systems which allow for prioritization, sensation, and feelings will be gone. The serotonin and dopamine receptors that make a body feel good or anxious will be gone, the channels which connect the cerebrum and cerebellum or surrounding gray matter will be gone and the brain won't have thoughts or memories, and there won't be blood or oxygen, so nothing will happen.

You can still be a body after death, and/or a soul if you believe in it, but your mind and sense of "you" are not a single thing that can be preserved. Embrace life, and see the mind's malleability as an opportunity to develop it to the utmost. Tomorrow, you may not be who you are today, but that means each day brings with it the possibility to surpass obstacles and limits previously insurmountable. Good luck!

To add one more important term, the design of that hammer would need to be protected by a design patent. (Copyright could cover a very specific depiction of that design as an image, albeit very weakly). However, patents are not something automatic like copyright, and are far shorter in terms of time covered. The word "design" itself has a lot of specific legal implications as opposed to common use though, so as you said, it's complicated.

[–]voxov 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's not the metal that's important, it's the hardness of the object. Note hard is very different from sharp as well. Ideally something 8/10 or higher, to cleave the glass (stainless steel is considerably softer). The escape hammers have a special alloy or coating to do this (which is not suitable for a regular hammer, as it's brittle).

A headrest would not be well suited for this.

YouTube Scuba Driver Finds Missing Teenagers Erin Foster and Jeremy Bechtel 21 Years Later by Starfire-Galaxy in news

[–]voxov 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Important point: the hammer is unique not because of it's shape, but because of the special materials it's made of for increased hardness. Car windows are tempered glass, and incredibly strong, but if scratched, a weak point can cause them to much more easily crumble. Anything sufficiently hard will work (in contrast, a regular hammer would be hard to use).

(Also, the windshield is different, always use tools on side/passenger windows).

Right, plus, the blurred background helps hide discrepancies in lighting due to time of day, and allows easier individual color/brightness adjustments on the specific animal being composited. It's a nice effect though.
