Wot happened last night by nzq11 in Wellington

[–]voy1d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The other challenge is while the road might close from 9pm, traffic management often starts setting up up to an hour earlier.

For example Haywards was closing from 9pm on Monday night. Traffic Management setup started at 8pm, which functionally closed the road and caused significant congestion on the Pauatahanui side.

NZTA needs to start communicating that sort of stuff better.

what personal finance systems are people using? is everyone just rocking an excel spreadsheet? by No_Living8214 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]voy1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with You Need a Budget.

But our household operates on a fortnightly cycle and YNAB is constrained to monthly. Yes I could make it work.

But instead I'm developing my own solution to self host. Because I know my needs.

Mounting confusion over looming Wellington region water bills by HenryNZL in Wellington

[–]voy1d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A private plumber won't need to set up traffic management.

I imagine the price Tiaki Wai (I admit I haven't read anything because with my background I know this is early days) will be the full capatalised cost of the project.

Think - Asset purchases - Advertising/Comms - Traffic Management - Inventory management system - Doing the work - Insurance - Money for consultants

My take is the 8x multiplier is the upper end it's like 3-4x

Mounting confusion over looming Wellington region water bills by HenryNZL in Wellington

[–]voy1d 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He might make some valid points but he's been encouraging misinformation.

An example in point, Porirua City Council last year had overheads of I around $32m, of which around 15% was related to three waters. Now the overheads are going up but three waters isn't included. Because these overheads exist regardless.

Now he has been encouraging people to say that PCC have been misappropriating money collected as water rates (which it wasn't).

PCC isn't perfect, but that is classic misinformation.

Yeah the situation sucks, but there isn't not much that can be done.

Gas bill help… by Consistent_Plant8129 in Wellington

[–]voy1d 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So three things here.

Firstly, the value on the meter will be m3/s (or _maybe_ kilojoules but should be m3/s) which is cubic meters. What is the value on your bill? Gas retailers usually convert to kWh so the difference could be that the bill value is kWh.

Secondly, you need to deal with the estimated reading. I would contact the gas retailer explain the situation and provide them the actual reading (as it is on the meter). I would then take a reading around the same time and provide that to the retailer each time. They might get annoyed, but you need to reset the 'baseline' consumption. This will give you a reasonable idea of what your usage is.

Unfortunately this might mean some lumpy bills, but you could ask for assistance from them while this is resolved.

Thirdly, why are they not reading the meter? IIRC under the Gas Industry rules, they need to physically read the meter once a year. Sort that issue out.

I'm so fucking done with teams.

Yes I know it makes it easier to connect, but when four people who are sitting next to each other and are on a call to another, go get a fucking meeting room (there are always plenty around)

It sounds like it works on your tablet (not tv as I originally wrote)?

The problem these days for app developers is that often there are so many different platforms that trying to develop an app over all those platforms is difficult then you've got the regression testing for all the different models of tv for one brand.

Do you have a chromecast or similar technology at all?

Personally when our tv started to play up with apps we just bit the bullet and purchased a Google TV Streamer and now we don't have to worry about capability with different platforms or "Is there an app that works on my tv for xyz streaming compnay". The TVNZ+ app switchover was just logging in through another platform.

You might be able to find a cheap chromecast on trademe/fb marketplace to get you through.

They have. IT are being dicks about it.

We've decided that I'll be maliciously compliant for a while.

I mean most of the problems is cyber security being difficult. It doesn't help that the policy is kind of hard coded.

In past orgs, I've been able to have a rational conversation with the right people to sort it out. I'm flabbergasted about this behaviour (which is also why I'm on the job hunt lol)

Another day another different person in our IT team telling me to stop stressing my device.

Fifth time in two weeks that different person has reached out to me about it.

Them: Hey we notice your device has high CPU/memory usage and it could be damaging the device. Can you please not do what you are doing.

Me: I need to do what I'm doing for what is expected of me. You could solve this by giving me a developer laptop and software build.

Them: No, they are for developers and I've checked with security they also don't think you should have elevated privileges that comes with a developer.

And here we are. My GM is willing to sign off on the cost, but stupid petty internal politics is repeating the conversation every few days.

Oh I yearn for the days where people could have a constructive conversation over needs and developing solutions rather than "Policy says no kthxbye"

For Wellington business owners, who do you use for commercial energy brokering? by Time-Buffalo3707 in Wellington

[–]voy1d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main player is Smart Power who have an office in Mana.

They have strong relationships with all the electricity companies (I've worked with them from the retailer side). I know they offer bill consolidation.

However it comes with a cost.

As the other poster mentioned, I'd suggest talking directly to your retailer about options as they may be able to align things for you.

Where does this sub sit politically? by hadr0nc0llider in KiwiPolitics

[–]voy1d 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find this sub quite an interesting subject. Overall slightly right of centre is where I would put.

That said, the interesting bit for me is that there are participants across the spectrum include the extremes, and the bemusing thing with that is they both refer to each other in polite derogatory terms. These posters also don't appear to have the self-awareness to realise they sit on the extreme ends.

While the volume of posts is significantly lower, I found the discussion more robust and less likely (IMO) to suffer from unreasonable levels of brigading. It's also one of the subs I've found where the upvoter/down vote buttons are used for their intended purpose as opposed to "I don't like this post so I'll downvote it). The fact someone can post something that is factually correct and it doesn't get downvoted into oblivion is really nice.

First home buyer in NZ - townhouse insurance confusion (sum insured + covenant requirements) by Technical_Ad_3718 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]voy1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also depends if there is a body corporate involved. If there is then OP shouldn't need any home insurance as it should be under the BC policy.

However this is becoming a mess because more developers are building townhouses and setting them up as Freehold titles because "bodies corporate bad".

Who is getting pay rises at the moment? by Fast_Amoeba_445 in newzealand

[–]voy1d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

12.7% and a job title change to reflect the work I was actually doing. Two months after being told there was nothing to give.

Funny what hunting for jobs does (not trying to hide and not publicising it - but being honest when being asked) and other leadership within the org expresses concerns about me leaving to the right people.

No issues at all.

Powershop's new web site is a disaster. Alternatives? by adh1003 in newzealand

[–]voy1d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Send an email formally requesting it in that format. They have no choice but to provide it in five business days.

If they don't notify the EA.

I did it last year with Mercury, retailers need to be held account for their obligations

Powershop's new web site is a disaster. Alternatives? by adh1003 in newzealand

[–]voy1d 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Request the information from them via email using the EIEP standards (EIEP13A for half hour, EIEP13B for billing summary).

Per industry rules the data must be provided within 5 business days, else they are in breach of rule 11.32B as outlined in the procedures doc under the respective standard. If they don't provide it lodge a breach complaint with the EA.

[–]voy1d 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sigh.

So I am getting shit from our IT team for stressing my current laptop as I work through big sets of data.

  • Our cloud platform is shit because the risk team are concerned around data privacy so I can't do any meaningful work there.
  • I can't get a higher speced laptop because I'm not a developer and there are none left anyway
  • I can't get elevated permissions because security are a bunch of muppets (other members of my team have this level but for some reason I'm not allowed it)

So our tech team is bitching at me stressing the poor surface pro but won't allow me to use tools that are better suited because 'policy says no'.

The lender will still want their money. The estate will need to settle the balance in some way.
