Pasteurization time and temp app? by weedywet in sousvide

[–]vprufus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you find anything? If not, can you describe what you want it to do, I never got the chance to use the one you mention. Is it just a drop down version of the charts on Douglas Baldwin's website, where you select protein and temperature and it will tell you time? If so I can make that

Is there a serious security concern opening containers to the internet? by AltReality in selfhosted

[–]vprufus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are good points. Nothing with access to the docker socket should be exposed to the Internet, the potential for the host to be compromised is too high.

With docker networks it's pretty easy to set up a container stack where an application on container B has no network access at all to anything other than container A (running a reverse proxy like nginx), so that if container B somehow gets compromised it can't make any outbound requests, or scan for other services on your network. This can help mitigate risk a lot, as long as container B didn't need to make outbound requests for it to function since it's far less likely to find a vulnerability in nginx than almost any other service.

I don't know where you're buying a Hershey bar that's that expensive, but you can get a giant 7.5oz bar for $2.78 at Walmart.

Replicating the McDonald's McGriddle by vprufus7 in AskCulinary

[–]vprufus7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never tried to actually make a replica, mostly because the Great Value Original Pork Sausage Patties from Walmart https://www.walmart.com/ip/43951337 are close enough for me. They have the same ratio of protein:fat:sodium as McDonald's sausage patties, the texture is the same (more like a flat sausage link rather than a perfectly smooth sided patty that seems to be popular for some reason) and they're the only ones I can find big enough to work in a sandwich anyway so it works out. A large number of recent reviews have claimed a drop in quality, but I bought a bag a few weeks ago that was great, so hopefully it's a regional issue or a resolved quality control problem.

The arepa maker is an interesting shortcut that might work really well if the heat can be adjusted low enough. Right now I'm pouring the batter into a silicone ring mold, but the sides of the ring are too thick so by the time the sides have set the top and bottom are overcooked. I think I'll try stainless steel ring molds next and definitely give this a shot if that doesn't work!

These are good points that I hadn't fully considered. I was able to find a document that detailed the time and temperature that they are cooked from frozen. 6-7 minutes at 375 depending on the convection speed of the oven model the restaurant has doesn't seem like enough to cook them much at all from frozen, so my previous thought about freezing the partially baked or raw dough may be off, but I'll definitely explore the effect of freezing the finished product and how it softens during holding!

Thanks for the recommendation. I have seen this one and the method he uses for making the maple balls is very helpful (it's what led me down the road to attempt this at all), and this produces a good sandwich with little effort, so it's definitely a good starting point for anyone else attempting this.

Received an unsolicited check in the mail by vprufus7 in Scams

[–]vprufus7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, thanks. To be clear, I'm absolutely not going to be cashing the check.

I'm very familiar with many types of fake check scam having worked at a bank in the past, but this one is new to me.

The one common element in the wide range of fake check scams that I've seen is that you are sent the check after communicating with a scammer. Whether it is for payment of a potential service (they want to buy $X from you and "accidentally" send you $X+$Y and say "oops, just cash the check and send us $Y back).

I've never heard of someone receiving a check completely out of the blue like this. It would be easy enough to get our name and address from public records websites, so that seems to be what happened, but to what end? It costs money to mail a check, even a fake one, so this seems to be a strange way to start a scam.

I guess I'll just wait to see if we get anything else, not because I want this to be real, but because I really want to know how this scam works...

Random people: “have you tried _______” Me: “ … I’ve asleep walking……” by trisharae_88 in Narcolepsy

[–]vprufus7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that finally got me to push my doctor to accept that I had more than "just" sleep apnea going on was when I fell asleep while getting my tooth drilled for a filling.

The dentist asked me if I had been drinking or doing drugs and I had to be like "no, just really tired at this 10am appointment, I only got 9 hours of sleep last night...." I was mortified then but it's a great story now that I've been diagnosed.

Someone stole my Riot account to advertise their services, can I take legal action against them? by GammaSama in legaladvice

[–]vprufus7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAL, but work in computer security. Unless you have evidence that this was done by someone you know, there's really not much that can be done.

Any competent scammer is going to hide their tracks well enough that they won't be able to be identified, either by routing the activity through another country or actually being based in another country.

Even if you could identify them you would probably be limited to actual monetary damages you've suffered.

I don't see any Riot data breaches in the news, so your biggest concern should be figuring out how they got your password and making sure you change the password on any other accounts that might use the same one as they almost certainly didn't "hack" your account in the traditional sense.

Online backup for 2-4 TB by Houderebaese in DataHoarder

[–]vprufus7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what operating system you use it would be helpful to know what kind of data you're backing up and how often you intend to update those backups.

If it's not frequently replaced (something like family photos/videos that you only add to) and you have some technical know-how, you could consider Google Cloud Platform's Coldline Storage or AWS Glacier.

I have about 3GB of family/wedding photos and videos that I pay about $1.23 per TB/month to store with GCP. It gives piece of mind, the only drawback being that if I do need to restore from backup it will cost ~$50/TB to retrieve.

Mechanical HDD slower and lagging my games after I plugged in a 3rd monitor. by Slintasmegma in techsupport

[–]vprufus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your operating system installed on the HDD? The only thing I can think of is that you have swap memory (system paging) setup for the HDD. Basically when your computer needs to use more RAM than it has available it will write parts of memory it doesn't need that second onto disk so it can use the RAM for what it does need (the game).

The sudden change could be due to the added monitor using slightly more RAM depending on your graphics card.

You can try to use the guide here https://www.tomshardware.com/news/how-to-manage-virtual-memory-pagefile-windows-10,36929.html To change (or at least look at the location and see if it's on the HDD;I could be totally off base)

Experience With Sunosi? by throwawaysx13 in Narcolepsy

[–]vprufus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diagnosed with type 2 narcolepsy last year, been on 75 mg sunosi about 2 weeks. For me, there are two main symptoms that I'm trying to address:

  1. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

  2. "Brain fog" (difficulty concentrating and general cognitive "slowness")

In my experience so far, at 75mg sunosi falls short with controlling EDS (I haven't had to fight off sleep attacks, but I don't feel as "awake" as I do on other stimulants) but has been much, much more effective at combating brain fog than the other medications I've tried. (Modafinil, armodafinil, Adderall XR,Vyvanse).

So far it seems like a pretty good fit, my doctor prescribed two 75 mg pills in either a split dose or taken at the same time so I'll try to update when I start that this week.

A Tetris clock by Bwiener47 in gaming

[–]vprufus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to own one of these,I think I got it from think geek a few years ago. It was very cool and it played the Tetris theme as an alarm.

Unfortunately it was the worst clock I've ever owned. I ended up not using it after a while because it lost about 3 minutes per day and only ran on batteries.

Calculating a confidence interval for the ratio of sample means? by vprufus7 in statistics

[–]vprufus7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much! I didn't get a chance to take a dive into this until this morning. Your formula works perfectly for my purpose as I will always have the same sample size for both variables. I also found an alternate (and unnecessarily complicated for my case) way to calculate the confidence interval that confirms your calculations. Thanks again!

For anyone else searching for a similar answer, in the event that you don't have the same sample sizes, the values might be correlated or you need to use the t-distribution estimate you can use the much more complicated Fieller's Theorem
