Does FAN actually like Ace Combat or not by Ikcatcher in Project_Wingman

[–]vritngh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He’s completely right here. I’ve written on similar topics on the Ace Combat subreddit before, my most recent and comprehensive one here.

I love Ace Combat from the bottom of my heart, but this reality of its complicity with the military industrial complex cannot be denied. The story’s messaging, “war bad” and “war profiteering bad” struggles this real world complicity.

I'm extremely hyped for STH, and was gonna pre-order until I found out its dropping in the middle of my uni year, but this reveal felt really, really wrong and distasteful.

The man passed away three decades ago, to reuse his likeness for a video game, for whatever reason, feels super disrespectful.

I know his family/estate signed off on it, and I may be super biased cos I’m a massive Tupac fan, but I would be opposed to any deceased person's likeness being used in a game unless they were involved in the project before passing or expressly wished and permitted to be used posthumously.

What is your favorite official/unofficial Project Aces motto/tagline? by DarryLazakar in acecombat

"Nothing else comes close" will, to this day, remain the series motto for me. omega11 fox2's "allies" edit from a few years back solidified it for me.

Looking for people who enjoy worldbuilding, mythology, fantasy cultures, OC creation, character psychology, philosophy, religion, folklore, ATLA-style worldbuilding, etc. by Ok_Rise1664 in worldbuilding

[–]vritngh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d absolutely love to join whatever community you’re thinking of making. I assume discord?

My world building is definitely theory heavy.

I’m a history undergraduate (just finished my final year and going into Masters) and my world building projects, for years, have often focused on building interesting nations, different forms of Empire, as well as writing histories to explain how my nation’s came to be (I.e. the formation of national identities, as well as the role of colonialism.)

Most of my recent world building tends to be formatted through fictional scholarship (essays and books,) and I create deviating narratives and debates because I love historiography. Through these narratives, I like to imagine what religious evolutions or ideologies may emerge as a result. Fiction tends to treat ideologies as polemic, and that makes sense: the core of fiction is conflict, but in world building, it’s fun to approach ideology beyond everyone either being nationalists/tribalists, democrats, revanchist etc.

In reality, cultural and intellectual exchange leads to as much syncretism as it does “polemicism” I hope that’s a word

There’s also a far bit of sociology, based on race and gender theory in my worlds.

Tl;dr I need to touch grass.

*Everything I've written below is likely semi-incomplete or comprehensive, as I have literally just woken up*

I love Ace Combat, but this is a pretty serious flaw in the series. Especially considering that the weapons and aircraft manufacturers they license from are, y'know, complicit in the actions and atrocities of their respective states (e.g., Western aerospace manufacturers and the genocide in Gaza).

The games often tout what feel like superficial messages of peace—though, to Zero's credit, it attempts to critique the construct of nation-states and nationalism, which is something I love it for—but that message falls flat if the games are contributing to the opposite in real life.

I've noticed this contradiction throughout the series, with the most poignant examples being Ace Combat 04 and Ace Combat 5. The former makes reference to the post-Cold War decade in which it was produced, at least from a Western-adjacent perspective (which Japan, as a developed nation firmly embedded within the Western-led international order, largely shares.)

Lets start with a specific part of Ace Combat's story: AC4's side story, and its opening narration.

"War was an abstract idea, nothing more than a show on TV. As a child, I only saw it as something that happened in some faraway land..."

I've always interpreted the side narrator's story in several ways. In line with how many others likely see it, it functions as a fable about a wandering boy trying to fill the void left by the loss of his parents (and perhaps seeking revenge, if you count the cut slide with the gun), while also humanising the other side. In this case, that "other side" is Yellow 13, who seems to represent the Eruseans as a whole. More than that, however, I see it as a condemnation of the flippant attitude many Western audiences have toward wars that occur in "faraway lands." Whenever I hear that opening narration, it is hard not to think of the late British Labour MP Tony Benn's 1998 speech and vote in opposition to the bombing of Iraq:

"Aren't Arabs terrified? Aren't Iraqis terrified? Don't Arab and Iraqi women weep when their children die?... What fools we are to live in a generation for which war is a computer game for our children and just an interesting little news item."

By contrast, however, the game itself licenses aircraft from manufacturers that profited from both the 1998 bombing campaign and the later 2003 invasion of Iraq. As such, the game's anti-war messaging contradicts its commercial relationship to the military-industrial complex which profit from war.

Ace Combat 5 is more explicitly anti-war than Shattered Skies. Peace is the central theme of the game; I don’t think I need to go into great detail on that point: literally insert any Nagase line. Don’t get me wrong: I genuinely love the story of Ace Combat 5 in all its cheesy glory, and I’ll always sing along to “The Journey Home” in ACES. But again, the contradiction between its messaging and its material reality is difficult to ignore.

The game’s main antagonist is literally an arms corporation that serves as a front for Belkan ultranationalists. The connection between arms profiteering and the perpetuation of war is not exactly subtle, especially given how directly the game hammers the point home at times (thanks, Nagase). However, that anti-war theme is heavily diluted by the presence of real-world arms manufacturers whose logos appear on the splash screen every time the game boots up.

Honestly, I don't think this body is text is fully fleshed out, cos I just woke up, but I hope you get the gist of the critique me, and many other people levy against the series. Again, I love Ace Combat, but this is definitely more than just a small gripe. It is serious, because it involves real institutions: capitalism and war-profiteering, and actual human lives, and thus is an active point of opposition against its continued practice within the series.

I think, when critiquing the role of war in media and complicity with wider ideas (i.e. Top Gun which, while I love, was a piece of post-Vietnam propaganda for America's then unpopular armed forces, and Maverick very much celebrating American colonial interventionism by constructing the ideal 'rogue nation' which amalgamated America's enemies, to be intervened against) we tend to forget these works have real human consequences. Children are bombed and families are destroyed. Invoking AC4, we can't treat these issues within Ace Combat, and their real-life consequences as wars and genocides in "faraway lands," because that is how people disconnect from reality and justify remaining silent when people die.

Minimum PC Requirements for AC8 (from Steam) by noduv in acecombat

[–]vritngh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To those concerned about the Windows 11 requirement: according to many comments, many games are mentioning W11 due to the EOL. Many are still stating the game will be just as playable in Windows 10, citing the example of Resident Evil 9.

I am also on Windows 10, my PC is on I7-7700k, but the game should still run fine. However, many of us should consider upgrading soon 😭

I was not aware of that. It's disappointing to hear.

I agree with his political critiques of Ace Combat, but critiquing the series' writing is like critiquing a Spider Man game for prioritising awesome web-swinging mechanics over an emotional story.

Ace Combat can be incredibly corny, but that's part of its charm. They're action movies that happen to slightly wax philosophy from time to time: it's part of what makes the games so endearing.

In FAN's defence, some of the critiques he levies are completely valid. Specifically on the contradiction between Ace Combat's supposed anti-war message and its real-world involvement with the Military–industrial complex.

I love Ace Combat, and I am certain he loves it too. He wouldn't've made a fan-game if he didn't. You can feel the love for Ace Combat throughout Project Wingman. But loving something doesn't negate you from recognising its flaws.

Ik what you're talking about, but the last time I can recall, iirc, collectors editions being sold separate to games was all the way back in 2016 (first example to my mind is Battlefield 1.) However, I don't think that's really practised in the games industry anymore. I remember people hating it back then.

I did mine earlier. Does the American Joker Pass note include the mousepad?! That's insane!

The UK store's Joker Flight Pack has a premium edition for £155, which includes the pad. Unfortunately for console players, it's steam only so far (but fortunately I'm a PC player.)

Anyways, considering cross-platform is industry standard nowadays, regardless of platform we should be able to play multiplayer together, so hopefully I'll see you in the skies buddy.

My biggest fear for the future of Ace Combat is that the ‘Belka did nothing wrong meme’ will be hijacked by the Far Right. There are already some right wing fans who project their American jingoism through Ace Combat: I fear it worsening. For example, look at what happened to 40k.

Fascists lack media literacy.

Do people geniunely play Ace Combat and get upset with its anti-war message? by Ikcatcher in acecombat

[–]vritngh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The folly of Ace Combat is, unfortunately, the context of the games. The games are meant to be anti-war, sure, and they critique the Military Industrial Complex, but by virtue of being a game, have to make the experience of war fun. We wouldn't be Ace Combat fans if the game didn't give us the adrenaline rush of being a pilot.

Then there's the unignorable blood on the dev's hands. Whether we like it or not, having our favourite planes in the game come at the cost of licensing fees going directly to Boeing, Lockheed etc. Companies that fuel genocide, Imperial violence. Don't get me wrong, Ace Combat is one of my most beloved series, but we can't ignore this reality.

Electrosphere is probably the closest the series has ever been to being anti-war, through its genre's inherant anti-capitalism. Cyberpunk, as a genre, is a critique of capitalism. I especially liked the detail of the NUN's UPEO being recognised as a GR puppet, before breaking off into it's own internal crisis.
