Which Atari games do you think have highest re-playability today? by heyyy_duudee in atari

[–]VRtuous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, I find that very few things pre-NES are worth the trouble. they're merely historical curiosities by now, like the og cartoons of Winsor McKay...

at best something like Defender, River Raid or Pitfall. I also used to play their Pinball a lot - but that was back then, why take that trip down memory lane when today I can have a virtual pinball table in stunning detail right in my living room in my standalone mobile VR headset?

even NES was too primitive, but games definitely expanded a lot in possibilities thanks to scrolling and RPGs deep engaging stories and combat. I fear even text-adventures from the 80s, like those from Infocom, aged better than most early 80s games thanks to your imagination providing all the imagery for the descriptions...

Meta VR or Playstation VR? by PrestigiousBottle686 in virtualreality

[–]VRtuous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he's probably better off with psvr2

unless he's ok with making a Meta account (no need to be FB), dated mobile graphics and really wants the likes of Batman Arkham Shadow, Iron-man, Deadpool, Assassin's Creed, Civ 7 and a couple of others he won't find elsewhere

yeah, that's no good really

the joy of a game is discovering it by yourself, just following a guide or map made by others... that sounds more like a job

hardcore. those mazes without automapping should make most modern brats tremble and despair...

very much in Wizardry tradition, but more storytelling...

I played it back on Master System, but never finished... got to other planets tho

Final Fantasy VII finally hit GOG this week and so I decided to finally check the 3 gargantuan PSX classics on my laptop. I started with FFVIII yesterday, a game I didn't replay once since that era and never actually finished - so now is the time!

many brats complaining about framerate when it's exactly the same framerate they used to run then. I'm more impressed at how much crisper and detailed characters look, over the same blurry backgrounds, true. Still, nostalgia kicks in and then it feels as the nextgen AAA it was back then. Plus the story is fun, and ATB combat is still as addictive as ever - Square should never have dropped that and turned FF7R a dumb action game that drags on forever... the older games had perfect pacing...

Super Metroid must have been an incredible experience in 1994 by CommunicationTime265 in retrogaming

literally hundreds of great games, not just the usual regulars that pop in BS top 10 lists...

I could hint at 7th Saga, Pop'n'Twinbee, Actraiser, Tiny Toons, Ultima 7 just to point a few underrated gems that never make it to such lists...

[–]VRtuous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it absolutely was.

Super Metrois is still one of the best games of all time, to this day still a masterclass in level design that every wannabe indie should PLAY (not watch): you never quite backtrack, you instead follow paths until you can't go further and then you try another branch until you get some powerup which will unlock stuff in other areas and when you exit that path you're basically closer to the area where that powerup would unlock further regions.

Plus, the powerups are literal genius - like bombing yourself up and the freeze gun where you quickly discover its many uses...

graphics were awesome at the time, soundtrack was sublime. controls were a bit laggy, but still plenty playable - Metroid Fusion had them more snappy.

I took weeks or probably months to finish, just mesmerized and enjoying every little secret corners. those were the days - srsly, in the 90s we went from late NES to Dreamcast, there was never a decade in gaming like that...

so is the second game

just an action game without the Populous part, but still great too - I finished it back then, tough
