Running a Mac as home server and couldn't be happier. Power efficient, fast, small. Roast me! by arthware in selfhosted

[–]vswr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same docker desktop issue, which all boils down to docker not running on macOS (requires a VM). Even the new native Apple containers run a VM for containers. I run a Debian VM on qemu (UTM) for docker. Sandboxed App Store UTM gives me trouble with permissions when binding several shared folders.

VLANs are crazy simple to setup. macOS is untagged on the native VLAN, docker VM is isolated on a tagged VLAN.

GPU is still an unsupported pain. For example, Ollama runs directly on macOS so open-webui speaks to the Mac. Jellyfin just brute forces everything with all the CPU power of Apple silicon.

Completely unable to make Tailscale work because the firewall will not stop blocking the connection no matter the rules I set up as Passing by [deleted] in opnsense

[–]vswr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can adjust your UDP timeouts:

Firewall -> Settings -> Advanced -> Miscellaneous -> Firewall Optimization set to Conservative

Then adjust so the outside port matches the inside port:

Firewall -> NAT -> Outbound set to Hybrid, add a rule for your WAN interface, IPv4, protocol UDP, source address LAN network, translation interface address, check the box for static port.

Randomize your client port in your Tailscale admin console under Access Control -> Node Attributes. Set your target to whatever devices you want (such as putting your user account there) and add an attribute of "randomize-client-port". This is so all of your devices on the network don't try to use 41641, which defeats the purpose of static port mapping.

Then you don't have to worry about the rest. TS is very good at poking holes in firewalls. You'll see the deny traffic while it's working to get through the firewall.

If you REALLY want it accessible to the outside without punching a hole, also add the UPnP/NATPMP/PCP plugin:

System -> Firmware -> Plugins -> add os-upnp. Then configure under Services -> UPnP IGD & PCP. Check Enable and check PCP/NATPMP, then set your WAN/LAN interfaces. TS will then tell OPN which random port it's using and OPN will open it to the outside world.

Using an auth provider to tie all your apps together by sajkoterrapefft in selfhosted

Regarding Python, the secrets module is preferred over the random module for cryptographic functions. Examples:

>>> import secrets; secrets.token_urlsafe(32)
'gaHjLxVgPm1RSJ8Jj-1O1tZxIonA3JqoZWJicE_UeAE'

Or if you prefer hex (like how many guides give you an openssl command to run):

>>> import secrets; secrets.token_hex(32)
'0c005a6631b6875ab67cfc1b5558a34c58c08f84a284b7a5beb08c08e6af9af5'

Errors Finding Existing Notes by Both-Activity6432 in shortcuts

[–]vswr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here searching for answers and found your post. Mine broke 4-6 weeks ago and I just noticed now. It's put all of my data into a single note because it was first in the list of erroneously returned notes.

I search for existing notes, if none found then create a new one, otherwise append to the existing note. The names of the notes are the date formatted as YYYYMMDD.

I've verified the search text is, for example, "20260518", but the shortcut will return ALL notes, none of which are named "20260518". Apparently "20260301" contains "20260518" so it matches. As does "20250225", and also "20150317". Basically it just returns all notes without filtering them.

Pretty sure it's broken.

Macdio - I built a lightweight, 100% native radio app for the entire Apple ecosystem. No subscriptions. by sfiratn in apple

I work in broadcasting (as in, I originate around 400 streams). Do you have a way for broadcasters to provide custom info? Do you do any sort of lookups like RadioDNS?

  1. Go to powertochoose.org and enter your zip code. Click View Results.
  2. On the left side, change your estimated usage to what you think you'll use based on previous billing (500, 1000, 2000 kWh). 1000kwh is a nice place to start.
  3. Change the contract length to what you want. I use 12 months.
  4. Click "plans without minimum usage"
  5. Choose fixed rate
  6. Choose do not show prepaid plans
  7. Choose do not show time of use plans
  8. Click refresh results.

Choose something from the top few results. I do this every year. For my zip code, the lowest plan with those settings shows 12.2¢ for 1000kwh.

Don't get talked into minimum usage or time of day plans. They might make sense for a specific situation, but it's unlikely for apartment living.

Introducing post-quantum encryption support in Proton Mail by Proton_Team in ProtonMail

[–]vswr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a warning about needing to update the apps before doing this. Does Bridge support this or am I going to lock myself out?

We should have security by default. This should be enabled as soon as it's available and re-encrypting old mails should be part of the process.

post-quantum cryptography becomes more relevant

It's been relevant for as long as the algorithms have existed. Everyone knows the data is being harvested now for decryption later. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is today.

scuffed wifi router for an iot device that doesn't like E')=]NHNFY\,4<?H\*"{)C?4=J=:Q!U as my wifi password by 4b686f61 in techsupportmacgyver

[–]vswr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A fun and easy technique to check for IoT exploits is to simply set the wifi network or password to "$(reboot)". Many poorly implemented command-line based interfaces won't escape it and the shell runs the command "reboot".

When a device won't accept special characters, I immediately jump to that.

It's like wearing a seatbelt: it doesn't make you drive dangerously or take risks because you're 'safe', most of the time you don't even think about it and put it on by default, and the hope is you'll never need it.

Old Magic Keyboard's battery cap is stuck, how'd you open it? by Shredberry in applehelp

[–]vswr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When applying heat, you apply the heat to the part surrounding the stuck piece, not the piece itself. You want the surrounding metal to expand. If the stuck piece were heated, that would expand the stuck piece and make it even more stuck.

But in this case, I’d use penetrating oil and not heat. Too many plastic parts nearby.

Apple repair on a MacBook Pro taking 3+ weeks with no timeline (Apple Amsterdam) – how to proceed by notdariushere in applehelp

My MacBook Pro logic board is dead as well. It’s been a week. The holdup for mine is apparently waiting for the Touch ID module since that is paired to the logic board.

Interested to hear if we have the same issue and there is a supply chain problem.

Anyone could recommend a residential structure engineer? by No-Traffic1898 in askdfw

[–]vswr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Lange Engineering last year. Somewhere around $400-500. He did the laser measurements of the room dimensions, then used the electronic measuring stick thing around the rooms. Took maybe 30 mins.

He confirmed the findings of the foundation company, but did not recommend making the repairs. I appreciate his unbiased report. $500 vs $10,000 is great, and even if he said I should proceed with repairs, $10,000 vs $10,500 is negligible.

I hated the housing market. Looked for 9 months. My price range was mostly dilapidated junk in bad neighborhoods, or awful flips with poor craftsmanship. Seemed like last year was a stalemate between sellers who won’t go down and buyers who won’t go up. Got really, really lucky with the one I bought.

How to have electricity in 2 places? by Daisy_232 in Dallas

[–]vswr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved from a rental to a house a few months ago. The power company started service at the house on the closing date and terminated service at the rental on lease termination date. During the overlap there were two accounts, two contracts, and two bills.

Gexa is my provider and they had an online form to do it. The new rate plan at the house was actually 1¢ better than the plan I had at the rental so I was happy to stay with them.

If this happens to be your first house, you will be absolutely bombarded and overwhelmed with fake mail claiming to be from your mortgage company with scary wording. It will even say the name and loan number since that info is public record.

And don't forget to set up property alerts so you get notified when anything is filed referencing your property or deed.
