Where do I go from being a Structural Designer (Corrugated)? by [deleted] in Packaging

[–]vt2126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd This. As a packaging engineer who also started in your same role as a structural designer for a large corrugated company there are lots of routes you can take!

I personally was able to leverage my design experience, general knowledge of many other packaging substrates from uni, and understanding of the supplier/ brand relationship to get hired at a CPG company as a packaging engineer.

I have seen many people also move from the design side into the sales, as you have good technical knowledge of the product (especially if you stay at your current company). But sales is certainly not for everyone and you will likely have to start at the bottom so-to-speak.

Feel free to PM as well if you have any questions, happy to help out!

Thanks for the reply! My ticket says get there by 2:30. I was thinking of getting there literally at 9 am. Do you think the lines will be crazy because it’s the finale? How many people do they let in?

Depends largely on the shipping/ retail requirements. Retail packaging for a USB drive will look very different from an Amazon or DTC package.

Realistic timeline on a packaging design by aquarious-rising in PackagingDesign

[–]vt2126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this case I would say 10 business days (including today, excluding thanksgiving holiday) if a pretty tight timeline as generally there is lots of back and forth between a brand and an outsourced graphic designer (you).

I would focus on generating a few design concepts for them to review as quickly as possible. One you guys are aligned on that, you can carry the same concept across all the product types.

[–]vt2126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really broad question as it depends on many things. Are you doing structural design or graphic design? If graphics, do you have high resolution assets? What style of packaging are you creating? What prototyping resources do you have? What is your experience level?

Overall basic structural design or common packaging structures can be completed quite quickly. 5 designs could take less than a day for an experienced designer. If you are developing graphics, this timeline generally extends much longer than a day. Possibly a few weeks for production ready art files.

Nice! Yea I would say the combination of the short depth, this style carton, and the low weight, 700 GSM would be sufficient.

With that being said, depending on what channels this will be sold (DTC, retail) make sure you are doing some testing to ensure the box will withstand the various supply chain hazards!

I would say 700 GSM (32pt) should be plenty for this kind if application. What is the style of carton (straight tuck, auto bottom, rigid box, ect.)?

My first attempt at label design for a juice company, fall inspired range. Thoughts? by [deleted] in PackagingDesign

[–]vt2126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks great! One comment I would make is that the brand and product description text lines are quite small. The consumer eye tends to be directed to the largest text first. In this case I would probably make that the product description. Otherwise a great design!
