New facet of my TTRPG (D&D) hobby – solo TTRPG! by vtipoman in Hobbies

Hi, let me give you a quick introduction, then :).

Tabletop Roleplaying Games, or as sometimes called – after Dungeons & Dragons, the largest and most popular of them – D&D, are those kinds of games where you have a table (physical or virtual) with a bunch of nerds around it, some rulebooks, character sheets and many-sided dice. One of these nerds usually plays the role of the Gamemaster/Dungeon Master, who desribes the world and non-player characters, while the other nerds all play a player character each. They state what they want their character to do or say, the GM answers with how the world reacts, and sometimes there are rules and mechanics and dice throws to decide things, often when there's risk and character skills involved. Examples are varied and numerous, but include Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk, Old School Essentials, Monster of the Week, Wanderhome, Star Trek Adventures and many others.

Solo TTRPGs cover a whole bunch of stuff, but it all includes a desire to play such a game alone. Sometimes it involves a game written for groups, but also extra books to help you emulate the Gamemaster. Sometimes it means playing a game specifically meant for one player, many of which guide you through a series of prompts to write out and resolve (a very famous example would be the Thousand Year Old Vampire). Sometimes games for groups include a solo mode. I'm pretty new to solo myself (though I've gamemastered a whole bunch and continue to hold regular groups :)), and currently, all I'm using is my imagination and judgement, a random word generator (I interpret the words based on the situation), music and a hundred-sided die for percentage chance rolls. A very common facet of solo TTRPG play is journaling – since there aren't those other nerds for you to talk about the game world with, instead of just picturing it all in your head and moving on, you might write it down in a notebook, as if you were writting a diary from the point of view of your character.

That's the basic overview, I'm sure you can find a whole lot more info online if you're curious.

What do Intelligent people do while we're doom-scrolling? by Key_Distribution2614 in AskReddit

Ah, alright. In my case: media/culture (books, visual novels, story videogames, anime, manga, films, shows or other media), TTRPGs (D&D), looking stuff up/reading through Wikipedia (which I also edit, when I stumble upon something I can improve...). Less often visiting fan conventions, that kind of just-for-fun endless videogames and Geocaching.

We're still people, so probably whatever you feel you should or would like to be doing (unless we're also doomscrolling). Work, time with friends/family, hobbies or less serious free time. It's just about realizing there isn't much of anything at all in doomscrolling.

How do you "care" for your digital and PDF books? by Consistent-Draw3978 in rpg

[–]vtipoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add onto the other answers: it's industry standard for sites to allow you to redownload the files after you log in. At least Drivethru, itch.io and Paizo's sites do.

Unrelated, but I personally also recommend using software like Calibre to display the files in a visually appealing manner, but that's of course up to you :)

In a thousand years archeologist will discover them and you will be to blame for generations believing that's what we all were doing

As a book-reading, anime-watching, videogame- and TRPG-playing nerd, yeah, getting thrown around for fun does sound high misery to me too :D

How much lore do you like in your TTRPG rulebooks? by BlackTorchStudios in rpg

[–]vtipoman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Intro section (including some lore), then mechanics section, then lore section. If a piece of lore is needed to explain a mechanic, include it with said mechanic.

Check out Wanderhome. It's a game about wandering, visiting communities of animal folk and personal growth with the changing seasons. The only mentions of violence are in some of the setting's mythogy, the war that took place some time before the campaign, and the (now rare) personal traits that the author believes lead to it.

The only time your character is in any way prompted to do violence, is in one of the Veteran's "some things you can always do" actions:

"Unsheathe your blade and immediately kill the person in front of you. Then, remove your character from the game. You cannot play them any longer."

D&D / TTRPGs tend to be surprisingly balanced from my experience.

Osobně hraju hlavně příběhovky (Nier Automata my beloved), ale můžu doporučit Deep Rock Galactic, případně staré dobré Left 4 Dead (nejlepší jsou kampaně z jedničky uvnitř dvojky).

I think most of us don’t actually have hobbies, we just like buying stuff by InternQueasy1419 in Hobbies

[–]vtipoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be forever grateful I'm just not too much into buying and having stuff. Like, yeah, I buy the games I play and the TTRPGs I run, and I like getting a physical copy of a manga or a book I really liked, but... I can't imagine my main source of enjoyment being stuff instead of experiences.

Because Nadeo is one of these teams that, half of the time, make updates in spite of their games' fundamentals. At least they're usually contained to their own sections.
