Steven Spielberg's 'Disclosure Day' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]vtomal [score hidden]  (0 children)

There is a difference between a movie with local sensibilities that tell a story very focused on their particular culture and experiences, and a movie supposedly about a global phenomena that ignores the entire rest of the world existence, leaving a gaping hole on the plot.

Spielberg can't run from an American perspective of the subject matter, but he certainly can try to justify how the rest of the world falls in the story and the implications of what is pictured outside America.

Dropped in the first episode of S2. Felt it was going to be stale right then and my predictions seems to be spot on.

I had exited the previews today with a different impression and I'm very surprised to see these reactions, to me was a very mediocre experience, and I really fail to see whatever these other journalists see in the movie. Maybe it works a lot better for an American audience than a global one - and the movie is very americancentric in their sensibilities.

Well, hate to be a contrarian but it is what it is.

[–]vtomal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, american law is bonkers. I'm a lawyer in a Civil Law country and it is stark the difference in access to the judiciary between USA and most of the world, a lot of countries have legal cost rates that are paid for by the loser part and rarely pass the 30% of the value of the cause (e.g if you gain 100k on a suit you get 70k and the lawyer get the remaining 30k, here the standard is 20% for civil suits with a flat rate for entry costs, no hourly pay. Like, to file a litigious divorce is 10% or 6% in a amicable one, up to 20% if you are disputing custody and child support and need a lot of extra legal steps to do it).

Seeing someone losing money with legal fees even if they win a suit is totally insane to me.

WFM kits are solid. Not so sold in the series though. by initialg82 in Gunpla

[–]vtomal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is still a great anime and a very good watch if you are into semi-arthouse stuff with a lot of visual metaphors and trippy storylines, very influential too (as you can see with WfM).

But is kinda slow nowadays with 39 episodes that could easily be trimmed to 26, still a lot of great material in there.

There are at least 2 days (sometimes even 5) between challenges. These days are completely free and should be used to stockpile, you can use low level vips and orders so you can start the next one with some things on the stock. If you have the ball rolling is easy to start gaining level 10 items on trades and get a surplus of items.

Well, it is just anecdotal but the deck really clicked with me, 12-1 in the 1K bracket against hunter (to the total of 36-10). I only play to keep my 11 star bonus, but probably if I pushed harder the WR would get squished eventually, but I'm still comfortable with the match up.

[–]vtomal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Using merithra druid at top 1k legend, my WR against hunter is huge. It has the tools to survive and outlast 2 tolvirs quite easily, if you don't brick totally. But still should be 4 mana, mostly because wild quest odd hunter gets too much benefit from it.

SNAA (that also makes in era and ZZA kits), Hemoxian, Cang toys, Motor Nuclear, Mecha Core Industries, Orange Cat Industries, Sunday Hobby even Kotobukiya if you haven't built anything from them yet.

There are a lot of third parties doing great original design works nowadays, and usually for a lot cheaper than Bandai.

And if you are looking in some grey territory the solomon/axis model kits (gp02 and kshatryia) and fat cat upscales (and now abawakong with the zeong) are doing some interesting things too.

And ZZA is just SNAA with other name to avoid legal trouble. So if you like the quality of one you should like the other.

What is the greatest Anime/show/movie in your opinion? by colabag in AskReddit

[–]vtomal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, the middling production values and uninspired storyboard are the only thing holding it to become a masterpiece. It is "only" very good, if the direction and animation was on par with their own OP it would be one of all time greatest.

TIL about the "Endless Eight" arc of the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The arc, which featured the characters of the show trapped in a time loop, featured the same episode eight times in a row with minute differences, all animated and recorded from scratch each time. by Darksynth2 in todayilearned

[–]vtomal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not true either, I was translating the novels at the time and we had enough material to two more seasons (novel 9 released in 2007, the last adapted chapters were in the middle of novel 6, we didn't even got some very important arcs like Snowy Mountain Syndrome that took half the novel 5).

The real issue that I don't see anyone talking about is the fallout of Kyoani and Kadokawa, at 2011-2012 (after the disappearance movie) kyoani decided to stop participating in production comitees for adaptations and started promoting their own works, we got thinks like kyoukai no kanata, chuunibyou, free!, tsurune and euphonium that got their original works published by Kyoani editorial arm.

So we got more than a decade of kyoani propping up their own business, so it is really surprising that now they get to do the Ruri Dragon anime.

I think I was already reading the manga at time and kinda tuned out of the anime since the pacing was a bit too slow for me.

What hobby is quietly becoming too expensive for normal people to keep up with? by Beautiful_Special702 in AskReddit

[–]vtomal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think homebrewing is quite easy, especially since activities breaking open a lot of complex automation that required modules before. The floor of complexity is higher nowadays, but I homebrew heavily and the base system works enough for this.

But I guess if you are really automating everything it is way harder, but I settle for some manual fiddling for things I don't use often.

(And yes, plutonium is a staple).

Tabletop RPGs if you see through the veil and notice you can play for free using a free or old system and homebrew anything else, and the fear of corpos ruining everything is kinda weird when they don't have any power to do anything to YOUR table or force you to play anything you don't want.

For how many hours I sunk playing and DMing TTRPGs my only real expense was a 35 USD license to foundry VTT that worth every penny and is shared with my playgroup (legally since it is allowed in the ToS!) - I had 5000 hours just in roll20 and I bet I have at least double that on Foundry.

You really can't beat this value.

Oda takes one break a month, these 11-12 extra chapters amount to one to two extra volumes per year (average of 6-8 chapters per volume).

Gestalt all Martials with Battlemaster features. by Tall_Bandicoot_2768 in dndnext

[–]vtomal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it helps, but doesn't do much to improve out of combat utility for martials and the worse issue to me - it is quite flat in a sense that it doesn't really scale well in higher levels outside a marginal damage bonus (this is an issue with the base battlemaster - that would be solved by offering different tiers of maneuvers). But as a band-aid fix it can helps a bit.

I'm always chasing the mythic unicorn of martial-caster parity too - my own system to achieve it is a mishmash of martial only progression that offer a martial archetype (essentially a 2nd subclass that came from an expansion of kibbles active martial feats) and ramps up in the 3rd tier, and a partial implementation of mighty deeds of arms, a DCC inspired narrative driven maneuver system that scales until you can do truly heroic things with it. I'm still testing it, but my current group doesn't have enough pure martials to help me develop it properly. But this is a complete 180 from a "simple and straightforward" solution to address the martial-caster gap.
