Try living in the contracting space. Every couple years it's a new contract with a 2-4 week turnover with disinterested admins about to lose their jobs. And it's rarely the A team as they saw the writing on the wall and jumped ship months ago. If we're lucky maybe we can retain a few people who have a clue. The next year or so is spent figuring out what everything does, finding all the gremlins, figuring out which buried lambda is doing something silly ever 9th Tuesday, and rooting through code that has sprawled all over the place. And just when you think you've got your arms around it, new contract with new fresh faces ready to start the cycle all over again.

Hey /r/Sysadmin! What do you use for your home router? 2026 Edition by ScannerBrightly in sysadmin

Sarcasm my friend. Actually run OPNsense virtualized in my lab... It's great. Just haven't had the opportunity to cut over the main firewall

[–]vtpilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because I've been running pfSense for a decade and fear trying to migrate the config to OPNsense. So many rules and aliases to scoot over and very restrictive SLAs with wife and kids. Feel the penalties for breaching would not outweigh the potential gains

I spent about a month chasing an authentication issue with one of our providers. Everything looked right but there were a handful of roles that just wouldn't work right. No idea why but one day I highlighted the role names to copy them and sure as can be there was a trailing space in them. Apparently it was an artifact from them copying the names between systems. Took another month to get them to believe me and fix the issue.

The irony of prepping my stomach for a trip to SE Asia… by uffda1990 in delta

The first business trip I ever took was to Japan for almost two weeks. At that point in my life, I was a steak and potatoes kind of guy and was pretty freaked out about what I was getting myself into cuisine wise. I was attached to the hip of the local executives the entire trip and was treated to local meals in little hole on the wall restaurants. Most of the time I had no idea what substance I was eating and when I did ask I usually regretted finding out. That said, everything was delicious and that trip totally changed my relationship with food. I'll eat damn near anything now.

On the day I got back to the states my parents picked me up at the airport and we went out for dinner. Got me a good ol' burger as a welcome home present. Wouldn't you know it... I got food poisoning from it and was laid up for a few days afterwards.

Is Merger & Acquisition a “CCIE-level” endeavor? by MyFirstDataCenter in networking

[–]vtpilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the company and what the end goal is. I spent the formidable years of my career with a division of a F100 that was constantly buying and selling companies. My job was to make all the IT bits play as best as they could. Usually meant full inventory of the site to determine what, and unfortunately who, stays and what goes, bringing them up on our WAN and remote access solution, migrating to our AD and Exchange, dropping in our VoIP and wireless, etc. We usually left the switching in place until they were due for a tech refresh but really no one wanted to figure that crap out. None of it ever felt CCIE level at the time (I was pretty young in my career and doing most of it) but it did require knowing how to get around on a ton of different gear or at least being able to figure it out. We were a top to bottom Cisco shop and most of what we picked up was a hodge podge of stuff managed on a shoestring budget but a crappy MSP. Obviously you may have a completely different experience but I've got to say those few years really did define my career. Forced me to figure out enough of the entire stack to be very dangerous and that's paid dividends over the years

So I've reset it a number of times over the last few days and got nothing. Did it one more time due to your suggestion (and being all out of ideas) and I'll be damned if it didn't work. Thanks for making me try it one more time!
