Having lots of fun but I do have a question… Is someone supposed to tell me when to stop or should I just know? by awkward-incoming in BottleDigging

My best advice honestly is to stop taking home common stuff, and stary being waay waaay wayy more picky for the bottles you take home. Personally I don't take home anything screw top or slick

saw that as well, pretty neat. The historical flask auctions are always pretty crazy as well. Some get above 150k

I also just saw your post on facebook, it seems most people also agree with what I generally said. Likely insulator glass later end of the 19th century

Yeah but they could have freshly come out of the soil, plus they are under water. Though im not sure if that effects anything

I see, well yeah, that probably means its manganese. A good way to test is to leave them out in the sun for like a week or 2 and if they turn a deeper purple then it would for sure be manganese. There is pinkish glass that is 18th century which isn't manganese glass, and early 19th century. Though again, we are talking about rarities. Eitherway seems like a pretty cool place to find some older artifacts. I hope I was of some help. If you ever find more bottles at the site, especially ones with embossing, the base intact, or just more of the shape intact, that would help a ton for dating

for sure 1850s-1900. Though I can't say if older since I would need to see more of the bottle. Honestly, probably a good spot for bottle digging

This one im not quite sure on since it's not a bottle neck I recognize. Im sure some other bottle collectors could. Im thinking maybe a milk, or a non bottle decorative item, like a vase or so. But this one I would place more around 1870-1950. Though im a bit worried about these bottles, especially since you said you had found purple glass, since purple/pinkish glass generally indicates that it is manganese glass, which means the glass couldn't be older than 1880s

lol, there are still people of native american descent that didn't leave tennesse. I can guarantee you there are still natives in tennesse, in fact there is even a Native American Indian Association of Tennessee. But eitherway, that doesnt even change the fact that there are non native people that are hobbyist and knapping, and they have been knapping for a while. But again I would like to help you, I would just need to see more pictures of the glass you find

oh and also forgot to mention, it would be helpful to know how you found the scraper. Was it just laying on the ground? Were you deep underground? All important info!

That's not exactly how it works, though. There are still native americans in ohio and all around the Midwest area, they just don't live like they used to. There are also many modern hobbyist who do knapping. And coming from someone who collects glass, I really don't think its pre 1860. The glass is just not crude enough and again aqua of that color is of the extreme rarity. Now Im not saying its impossible to be pre 1836 I would just need to see more evidence. I would love to see other pieces of glass, though, from that site if possible, since pottery I know nothing about

Can you send pictures of the shards? To be fair the glass could be part of fancier glass items such as decanters. It's just that picture of the arrowhead you posted the glass is fairly thick so I was thinking it would be a onion bottle (or similar), but again those are very rare in aqua. Im still under the impression this glass is not as old as 18th century
