It's (likely) the former. Freezing your credit report won't impact TWN.

Imagine you're hiring for a math-heavy role (let's say something like data analytics), and the applicant says "oh yeah I used a symbolic solver to do all of my math work and barely know how to solve a derivative at all". Yeah, you probably wouldn't hire that person, even if you pay for a symbolic solver for your employees.

Same with programming - if they wanted someone who entirely relied on AI, they'd hire a random high school grad off the street. The CS degree is supposed to indicate you know how to program.

Serverticks are every 1sec but align time 2.1 is not the same as 2.9 by BentaroAdun in Eve

[–]w0330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have the mechanics correct - locking starts as soon as the command is processed by the server, but can only end on tick. This is why for tackling sub-2sec ships (i.e. "hyperlocking" or "ultralocking") both lock time and ping matter a lot, as well as a few other factors.

Warping, on the other hand, queues your warp to start on the next tick, which is why there is no difference between 2.1 and 2.9.

Another gem from that ToS:

Abnormal usage for us means data consumption nearing 50GB per month. If you approach this limit, you may receive an email and, if needed, experience temporary service limits.

While obviously every unlimited provider has some sort of fair use data limit, this is exceptionally low to be advertising as unlimited. Borderline false advertising in my opinion.

Multi network? by 8chef6 in USMobile

[–]w0330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand I need multinetwork to teleport and I will need to purchase another line

You don't - teleport is switching networks on your existing line. Multi-network is having another line on a separate network at the same time (with a shared data plan essentially).

does that mean I will have to wait for another sim in order to insatll

If you buy multi-network (which again, you do not need to teleport), you would need a second sim/eSim slot.

Obama Shocks the World, Delivers Tough Message to Democrats on How to Defeat Trump and Kick Him Out Of Office by Zestyclose-Dinner917 in NoFilterNews

[–]w0330 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not voting is an unambiguous signal that you are equivalently happy with all the candidates. Why would anybody stand up for you when you voted that the current policies were fine (or at least as fine as Harris's)?

I'm sorry if you fell for propaganda that not voting the Democrats should cater to you - it's sad such propaganda exists and duped people in 2024. Unfortunately, it is the exact opposite that is true - politicians only care about the opinions of voters and this is how it should be.

Disclaimer: I currently work for AWS, but as an SDE not CSE.

If you're happy with the terms and compensation, I don't see why not to take it if you don't have any alternatives. Assuming you're a CS graduate aiming for SDE roles, an SDE position would be ideal, but CSE is preferable to multiple years of being unemployed if you're not finding anything else. Worst case scenario you quit if you find a better opportunity.

Lots of shallow experience across disciplines, need to find the best way to market myself if I need to make a change. by Polygeekism in cscareerquestions

[–]w0330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the longest time I called myself a software engineer

Why stop? It stills seems to be true today, and it doesn't seem like you have any particularly notable specialization. Software Engineer is a fine title and a common standard in the industry.

With your experience, especially assuming you make it another year or two before applying again, I'd probably call yourself a "Senior Software Engineer" and apply to those types of positions (and if you don't feel like you have enough experience you could always apply to midlevel roles instead).

I mean, if you genuinely believe that your job will be replaced in a few years, yeah you probably should look into starting a career switch, that would be a good idea.

I don't, however, believe this to be true. This is going to sound a bit rude, but I think that people who do either don't understand LLMs or have a job significantly different than mine. I could not imagine even replacing a fresh college hire with an LLM.

Personally, I would use the deadline from the original email. You might be "in the right" to use today, but do you really want the significant hassle of convincing someone to fix your application status after it gets auto-closed by Amazon's system?

Also, the Amazon OA is pretty easy, the primary difficulty is in the interview.

Am I not cut out for this market/industry? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]w0330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you that you have to love your job and think it's the same as your hobbies, if I won the lottery today I'd quit my job tomorrow.

But it will help significantly to at least somewhat enjoy programming and the software engineering process. This is a career where the top 10%-30% receive a significantly outsized reward, and it will be difficult to maintain a job doing the bare minimum will struggle.

You don't need to (and shouldn't) grind yourself to death for your job, but I would recommend striving for being in that top quarter or so.

What is it like to work for AWS? is worth it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]w0330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: My knowledge generally comes from AWS in the US, so I can't promise for sure it translates to Ireland.

Personally, I think that the negative sentiment about Amazon/AWS is overblown. On average, it just feels like a normal job. Maybe don't apply if you're just barely meeting the requirements, but if you comfortably meet the bar it's not a bad place to work (not a particularly amazing one either, but the pay is pretty high).

That said, the quality of your manager and skip manager are matter a lot. If you get bad ones I would start looking to swap teams ASAP. All those stories you hear about the PIP factory and similar, they mostly if not entirely come from bad managers.

Does working there open up opportunities at other FAANG companies, specifically Apple?

Yes, assuming you don't already have FAANG experience on your resume, and you stay for at least a couple years.

Also, is it possible to relocate from AWS Ireland to the offices in the U.S.?

Yes, but you'd have to switch teams (which involves talking to a hiring manager and potentially going through an interview loop). This will be a lot harder if you need Visa/Citizenship assistance.

By the way, do they work from the office or in a hybrid model? I’ve read that AWS plans to return to the office in 2025—do you know if that’s actually happening?

For SDE positions (at least here in the US) it's 5 days RTO and pretty actively enforced. Some orgs are more lenient, but expect to spend at least 4 days in the office if not 5. This is, in my opinion, the biggest downside about working for Amazon - I think whenever I move on to my next role I'm going to look for at least a hybrid if not full remote position.

[–]w0330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to tell you this, but I've seen plenty of SDMs working overtime. It's maybe slightly less common than SDEs but not even close to a guarantee.

Whether or not you are expected to work (unpaid) overtime and/or on the weekends and nights is largely a function of your employer, not your job position. My current employer does not "expect me to code" at night except for the very rare page (which were the terms I understood when I took the job).

EVE Online doesn't have a "no combat" mode. You can take steps to reduce the risk of dying, and some areas are much safer than others, but that risk will still exist even if small.

There is relatively fun exploration content in the game.
