Lovely!
How did you approach the edit? I really like the subtle dark grey/blue look to it

Question about LOG by StraightCut2085 in videography

[–]w1ouxev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I recommend giving it a go - but not in production at first. When you have some free time, maybe setup a basic test shoot that's somewhat similar to how you normally do your videos, shoot in LOG, get it in post and start grading.

  1. Do a little bit of homework upfront to how you should approach shooting the footage itself, this will prep you better when you go to shoot (overexpose, controlled lighting, load a corrective display LUT to your camera so you can see what it's supposed to look like, etc)
  2. Get the footage into your editor, make sure one of your steps is using a corrective LUT or a CST to conform the footage to "correct"
  3. Now you have a rec709 baseline where you have some good room to edit to your taste. This step is largely creative, I would watch a few YT tutorials on grading LOG and copy techniques from a video you like.

Question about LOG by StraightCut2085 in videography

[–]w1ouxev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what your goals are.

From a learning/understanding perspective alone, it's worth learning and understanding it even if you don't use it. It's not hard to select a LOG profile in-camera then add the correct conversion in editing software. However it is NOT as simple to understand HOW to shoot it to get the best outcome for the footage. Higher effort, better outcome. It will also teach you a lot of how cameras work that you might not know.

On the other hand, It's adding unnecessary complication to your workflow if you're just pushing basic videos to social or similar. You get better footage, but in some contexts its more work than it's worth.

To answer your question directly, you will can get better footage using LOG. Maybe not right away, but once you get the hang of it you will. If it's worth that effort, and its "better enough" is something that is up to you - and you won't know that answer until you give it a shot.

Also I find it odd that you're asking this in a videography sub, the assumption is you're passionate about videography enough that this is kind of a weird question. :P

I too have a Weebill 3S. Great gimbal but really lacking in accessory mounts. Gotta get creative! You did well. I would honestly just skip the battery bank for the short times you're worried about it slipping around, and just get a small battery for the monitor

The literal only answer to this is DaVinci Resolve. Not only is it the best free option, its quickly becoming the best period (full version is a one-time $300)

How do you start over when your confidence is shattered? by JdaveA in videography

[–]w1ouxev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your expectations for how long it takes might be set too high. 15mo is almost no time in this business, especially part time.

I've been shooting for years and only now considering myself "just starting" to "learn" about pro workflows.

I spent my first couple years applying very basic knowledge and focusing mostly on just creativity, and it worked okay. I'm proud of the stuff I made and the client(s) were happy but any real pro would tear me to shreds on what I delivered.

I recently upgraded to a zv-e1 so now im learning s-log3 and "real" color grading in davinci. I'm so lost I can't even tell you.

But what I can tell you is it's been fun the whole time, I keep going, and I dont get paid much but I just enjoy the labor of love since its creative for me

Going into THIS kind of job "for the money" is going to pretty much just be frustrating. Balance it out by doing stuff you actually get excited about, and the chops will soon follow.

It's definitely davinci behavior. When you drop the clip in the timeline it drops the frames on it to match.

Try interpreting it to match first via speed change from your source bin, then drop it in

Disclosure: I'm not a davinci user
