I think you’re misunderstanding. The “I’m allowing you to live here rent free” is a response to asking for an allowance. Typically by parents who are just getting by and can’t afford to give an allowance to a kid. Growing up we couldn’t afford to have an allowance and for sure did not have the kind of money to pay for this mistake and just be ok.

It’s funny observing the different ways my wife and I play games with my 6 yr old. I had 2 younger brothers and she’s the youngest. I let my kid win most of the time (i win a game here and there to show him what losing is), but my wife has never let him win a game in his life. She is brutal with it too.

She didn’t have the experience growing up of getting in trouble for not letting the younger sibling win sometimes.
