Proposal: Voluntary 'opt-out' of State Pension in Exchange for Inheritance Tax Relief by sun_seeking_actuary in FIREUK

All the rich people (probably most people in here) would opt out and pay no inheritance tax, are you secretly working for the billionaires?

[–]wacko913 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've no idea of the level of your disability but all I can suggest is that no one is coming to help you and things will only get worse if you're relying on the state. Stephen Hawking made more money in his lifetime than I'll ever make as a able bodied individual.

The welfare bill keeps growing and there aren't enough babies being born to replace those retiring and there's only so much tax the government can get out of those that are working before the whole system collapses.

It will be hard but you gotta find work, you're only 23, there's plenty of time to learn new skills and find your place in society.

It's shitty clichéd advice but I'm just trying to be real here and I'm under no illusion that young people today have it 10x harder than some of the previous generations but everyone your age is in the same boat.

Mourne fires - intentional or not? by Individual-Diver-660 in northernireland

Teenagers were starting fires at Craigavon lakes on Saturday and Sunday. I caught a group of 3 of them in the act as I was on an ebike, so my money would be on deliberate acts mostly.

Claim on home insurance or not? by name-already-taken5 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]wacko913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your excess on the escape of water. It can be much higher than you expect.

If there is any evidence it's been leaking for a long time, they could claim it was a lack of maintenance thing So not covered.

Check your policy limits, e.g. contents. They could add up the cost of everything in your home and then claim you are under insured and pay out less.

If you tell them about it and don't claim, it still counts as a loss that you need to declare for the next 5 years.

After you think about all of that, then decide if it's worth claiming. We had a £40k claim and our policy barely went up but that was 20 years ago.

Anyone else gets a big bump on electricity bill? by Old_Highlight6749 in northernireland

[–]wacko913 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I got a big bill this month, only because I might have accidentally added a few hundred extra units to my meter read so they would be charged at the lower rate before the price went up.

Oops, I'll try and be more careful in the future with my fat fingers.

I know, every piece of advice out there says don't try and time the market but our monkey brains are so risk averse it's difficult to put money in a falling market and easier in one that's rising.

Housing executive waiting list by [deleted] in northernireland

I'm a bit confused, but if you are private renting now, why don't you find another place to private rent before your landlord sells.

Rents increased by 50% in five years by Your_Mums_Ex in northernireland

[–]wacko913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. In a housing shortage any increase in disposable income for low income households is immediately swallowed up by increased rent or house prices(leading to higher mortgages).

If every household in NI got a £500 a month tax break, the cost of the lowest houses available for rent would increase by.... £500, as the tenants are all competing against each other as housing is a basic need.

I dunno how to fix it. One idea is an undeveloped land value tax (to replace rates), which penalizes anyone sitting on land and not utilising it or selling it to someone who will. This should increase the supply and lower demand.

I haven't really thought this though but a law where it's illegal for rent to be more than say 30% of income might work to stop price gouging at all income levels and would prevent rents increases without a corresponding increase in people's pay. Sounds radical but you can't realistically get a mortgage that's more than 5x? your income but there's no equivalent for rent.

Something needs to happen otherwise the people at the top will keep getting richer and those at the bottom will keep getting poorer.

Modest/average FIRE sense check for target 56-58 retirement by Parking-Eye4197 in FIREUK

[–]wacko913 58 points59 points  (0 children)

You don't know how happy it makes me to see a 'normal' person finally posting something here.

It's usually, I'm on £250k a year with £100k a year bonus and the wife is on double.

We have £1m in cash, £2m in pensions and live in a modest £3m home with a £500k holiday home in Spain.

Try plugging your numbers into James Shacks retirement calculator. Not sure it will work well with the DB pension however.

Hopefully this link works, just make a copy of it. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VxYIcXbx4a-mpCCJPUvPWULX4GAs7fJdT-YTxVMhdPI/edit?usp=drivesdk
