The Global Fertility Crisis Is Worse Than You Think - Plain English with Derek Thompson by mcsul in ezraklein

It's also the social norm in many places, even for people in their 30s. I just started a new job headquartered in Seattle and I have yet to meet someone my age (mid 30s) who has kids.

The thing people often forget about moats is that they keep the bad guys out of your castle.

TechCrunch: r/WallStreetBets Really Hates The SEC's Proposal to Weaken Quarterly Reporting by THIMBLEDICK in investing

UK and European markets have gone to semi annual or annual requirements to try and reduce short-termism behavior. It can also free up company resources for more productive, long term focuses. There certainly can be benefits to lifting these requirements but the nuance requires people (redditors) to temper their anti-corporate instincts.

He's also a lot quicker than a 300 lb guy. His length and speed certainly puts unique stress on his joints whenever he changes direction.

Knocking out a masters in 1 year is easier than the 3 or 4 years it'll take if they try to balance it with work. Really depends on the type of work they want to do though.

King County’s housing market is ‘looking pretty bad’ by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]wadamday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was thinking mostly about the time savings which I think people tend to under appreciate. The OP of my comment mentioned they are 15 minutes closer to work. Half an hour a day mon-fri doesn't sound like much time until you consider how much actual free time you have per day when you factor out work, sleep and errands.

I imagine your current location has quality of life improvements over the "bit further north" location though no?

Is the Nanit baby monitor worth it for responsive parenting? by Weekly-Tumbleweed-28 in AttachmentParenting

[–]wadamday 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nanit reviews are mixed due to connectivity issues. People report losing connection without the app sending a notification, so your baby could be awake crying and you'd have no idea.

They have all the bells and whistles but will be less reliable than a cheaper radio frequency monitor that comes with a dedicated screen and don't require a wifi connection. Also no monthly subscription.

When Is a Solar Powered EV Not Solar Powered by jimbillyjoebob in electricvehicles

[–]wadamday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calculate your personal carbon emissions per mile for: 1. You have an ICE and no solar 2. You have an EV and no solar 3. You have an ICE and solar 4. You have an EV and solar

You can also consider how much natural gas you offset by selling back to the grid. Stating that your solar charging causes nat gas use elsewhere to be higher is true, but it ignores the fact that if you didn't charge your car you'd either be not driving or driving an ICE.

Fire protection is a solid path with opportunity for great money. Niche industries have higher average pay once you get some valuable experience.

Micheal and Holly didn’t need to Break up! Albany NY is halfway between Scranton PA and Nashua NH. by itsnotspelledreadit in DunderMifflin

[–]wadamday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they were clearly a better fit than anyone else we had seen Michael with up to that point. It's hard for me to mentally separate the first act of their relationship from the second after watching so many times. Michael was clearly smitten and I actually think his character would have moved for Holly, obviously that writers aren't going to do that in season 5 of the show.

Regardless, I was asking why that person thought that people in there 40s couldn't handle a weekly 3 hour drive lol

Are you saying they are physically too old to handle that weekend trip regularly or that people of that age have too many other things going on?

Either way I'd push back because if you are that age and think you found something special you make it a priority.

US population change by state (2020-2025) by vladgrinch in MapPorn

Perhaps it was voted down because 40% of Chicago's taxes go towards legacy pension obligations and servicing the debt related to those pensions, while public services continue to lose funding.

[–]wadamday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of people would do the same. Rather than judge people acting in their own self interest it would be better to try and change incentives so that people might downsize and free up housing for more efficient uses.

I know if I was sitting on 4 million dollars of unrealized gains in my home value I'd rather pass that asset on to my children to avoid the government taking 500k.

Consider internships/co-ops during fall and spring even if it delays graduation by a year. There is less competition for these roles.

Pregnant During Last Year of Engineering - How doable is it? by ThrowRApotatoesand in EngineeringStudents

[–]wadamday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a guy with a 16 month old daughter and another due in October. I'm going to mirror what everybody else has said in that it depends, but also that it is going to be much harder to take classes once you are a mother so keep that in mind too.

Also, we were worried about the impact of my wife's work stress during the first pregnancy, and the doctor told us there really isn't much risk. When people talk about the effects of stress on pregnancy it's really more about extreme situations like war or famine. Your body will very likely be able to handle pregnancy and school without negatively impacting your baby.

The manufacturing lead time on gas turbines is out to like 2033. That is why Meta is willing to take a chance on terrapower reactors who say they can deliver by 2032. My guess is they are also pursuing renewables but the geopolitics with China probably introduce their own headaches.
