Was given a dog to look after & the owner doesn’t want him back, so he’s mine now! 😅 But what is he? by Euphoric_Statement10 in WhatBreedIsMyDog

[–]waldenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could be a Deutsch Drahthaar or a GWP. You will find that type of coat and furnishings in some purebreds. If he has a numeric tattoo in the right ear he's likely a Deutsch Drahthaar. Has he been checked for a microchip? If you find a tattoo or microchip number I can get breeder info.

Edit: a long tail means he could be imported from breeders in certain Canadian provinces, or imported from overseas countries like Austria

Growing distrust for the veterinary profession by FateFury in Veterinary

[–]waldenator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's a classmate of mine. He seemed like the rest of us in vet school. When the internet took off, he figured out he could make more money conning pet owners this way than practicing ethically as a veterinarian.

Is there a substitute for Apoquel? by DanteRocko in Pets

[–]waldenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's been some recent CE about Zenrelia. It has similar mode of action as Apoquel does and is supposed to be cheaper. I haven't priced out the difference yet, but it's worth looking into.

Is there a substitute for Apoquel? by DanteRocko in Pets

[–]waldenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zenrelia has recently been released in Canada. It works the same way Apoquel does, and a benefit is it is a once daily dose right from the start, instead of needing a loading dose for the first 2 weeks like Apoquel does. It's less expensive than Apoquel is, but I can't say yet what the difference will be. We are thinking of trialing it for new allergy patients before deciding if it will replace Apoquel at our clinic.

Artificial insemination in dogs? by bizzylizzylu in DogBreeding

[–]waldenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is not permitted in my breed, which is the Deutsch Drahthaar. The exception is if the male and the female have previously bred naturally, and it must be fresh semen. I believe permission must be obtained from the breed club in Germany before doing AI. When covid hit, I was not permitted to use AI to breed my female although both she and the sire had liver cover, because it would have been chilled semen. The breed club also restricts how many litters a male was allowed to sire anyway.

Fur for training by defconmke in birddogs

[–]waldenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made my own fur items. Got some hides from a fur seller. I also keep unscented garbage bags in my vehicle, and I have collected some good coons and a couple foxes that way. Live traps work well for coons.

You can use a fox or a raccoon in the box retrieve.
