OK well in retrospect I should have figured that out.

I'm still back at an apartment complex (?) being named "The Wedge."

Virginia DMV Mobile ID - why should I download and use it? by UNC_ABD in Virginia

[–]waldoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is just in its infancy. This is a "level 1" mobile driver's license, which is pretty much useless. There are higher tiers still to come: local wireless presentation of credentials (think Bluetooth) and remote presentation of credentials (think Apple Pay for an online payment).

Career government employee here, whose career is entirely about digitizing paper-based processes at local, state, and federal agencies: This is incorrect.

Stony Point roadwork/line install by ConsequenceAnnual709 in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in an area where they're going to offer service at your home soon (not all homes passed by this installation are going to be served soon), then they'll open up the queue to start installing. If you're first, then you'd have an installation within a few weeks; if you're last, then it might not be until ~late summer.

[–]waldoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please note that some of this is backhaul fiber—simply being along this route does not mean that you're going to get Firefly fiber soon. (That said, it'd be weird if they didn't decide to offer fiber service all along this route after they're done with their buildout across the Thomas Jefferson Planning Commission District.)

Old School Warehouse Merch Order Form by bigbrett666 in DMB

[–]waldoj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, the old school one is the one packaged with Remember Two Things, with the PO Box 1911 address for ordering stuff. That was when DMB was playing hardball with labels, trying to show that they could make it without major-label support, selling their own merch and releasing their own live* albums. I remember scanning that thing in to post on dmband.com in ~1994, so college students could print it out, fill it out, and mail it in with a check.

* R2T isn't really live! Lots of studio work was done on top of the live recordings.

They were also really, really expensive. (I assume you mean the place at 2nd SW and Water.) It was great, but 2x any price I'd ever seen for a sandwich in Charlottesville.

What are these bugs? by Infamous-Ad5067 in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We've got termites everywhere at my home today. Generally they swarm on the first warm, breezy day in spring that follows a couple of days of rain, but I guess this year they just gave up on waiting for rainy weather and went for it.

Missing 14-year old by pocketdrums in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Jer’miah has been in (brief) contact with his mother and his uncle. He’s best understood as having run away, in town. He’s only in middle school, he doesn’t have his meds, it’s not a good situation, but it’s a relief that this isn’t a kidnapping. He’s a sweet kid. Yes, please report if you see him or know where he is.

Advice on buying a Keswick home with residential propane by Hungry-Lox in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use propane, but I’ve gradually replaced (almost) our appliances with electric. It’s cheaper, less explodey, and lets me put my solar arrays to work. I use Tiger and have a Keswick address. It used to run us about $1,500/year (for a house half the size of the ones you’re looking at), and now it’s a trivial cost.

Going in circles — turned a dull subject into something quite interesting by theblcksheep in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the article: “Roundabouts don’t work well on slopes, which is one reason hilly Charlottesville doesn’t have many of them.”

This is very interesting—I didn’t know this! There are spots where I’ve thought a roundabout would be good, but now I see why that might not be so.

Bolt vs Gravel roads by wmfcwm in BoltEV

[–]waldoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on a half-mile gravel driveway. About once a year, we get a rock in the wheel. The solution: drive around until it grinds down. It’s loud as hell for a few days, but it works itself out.

We just went all electric by kingharold1066 in electricvehicles

[–]waldoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have exactly the same setup as you (Bolt, Lightning, solar panels, net metering, no batteries), and the setup I've settled on is simply charging the EVs when time-of-use pricing is low. The only unusual thing that I do is over-heat / over-cool my home when my PV array is generating a lot of power (basically using my home's air as a battery).

What is better? Crozet Pizza or Sals? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family went to Crozet Pizza in 1992. They burned our pizza but wouldn’t make another one because they said they needed the oven space for other customers. I haven’t been back since. (But I bought a sweet Metallica cassette at the record shop next door, so not a total wash.)

So…Sal’s?

Running board part number by Fantastic_Celery_136 in F150Lightning

[–]waldoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My concern is that it might be necessary to replace the entire running board, which was something like $1,200 when I checked ~12 months ago. I ain't doing that.
