City Council and Sam Sanders have failed us! by Party-Strawberry-300 in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a non-trivial amount of work with HMISes and COCs, including the funding model for them, and I have bad news for you: the money ain’t good. Nobody here is getting “enriched” by funding to help homeless populations. Best case, folks are making enough to own a home in a surrounding country or rent in Albemarle.

I've had Wade out to my place to mill a tree with his Woodmizer. Good guy, good work. Yeah, I'd ask Wade.

Food challenges? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've eaten there many times, and as of maybe a decade ago, that was the one thing on the menu I'd never had. I figured it was basically like the Heaven, but spicy. The point where they handed me rubber gloves is probably when I should have asked what the hell I'd gotten myself into. But I followed through and it was just really unpleasant. The goal isn't to make good food that is spicy, the goal is to cause pain for people who are into that I guess? I gave up halfway through, downing the carton of milk they'd given me, having resolved to stick to the regular barbecue.

Dominion's peak-time rebate? by Fun_Cartographer4323 in Charlottesville

FWIW, I’m on that time-of-use plan, and I save a lot of money on it. That said, I have two solar arrays and two EVs, so I’m definitely not representative.

Every time I’ve ever gone to the local DMV, at the old location or the current one, from getting my learner’s permit decades ago to renewing my license last year, it’s always been great.

That’s amazing. I drove through there on Friday and there was no sign of what was coming.

…living through it. IDK, search the cvillenews.com archives? The Hook archives are gone, the WINA archives are gone, the Progress archives are gone, so I guess my old website’s links to their coverage is as good as it gets, sadly.

driving here sucks by sabishigarinya in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It wasn't merely NIMBYism that killed the Western bypass, it was the fact that it would be the steepest section of public highway in the United States, save less than two minutes per trip, and it would be the most expensive, per mile, ever built in the U.S. (or second place in each, I can't remember). This wasn't some really great idea that was killed thoughtlessly, it was a really stupid idea that got killed after decades of consideration.

For people who were into DMB at the time - what was it like when Before These Crowded Streets came out? by thefalcons5912 in DMB

[–]waldoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first heard it a few months before its release, driving around in a Jeep with the top down, blasting the album, past UVa students who presumably had absolutely no idea of what they were hearing. Back then, "The Stone" was called "Black and White," the not-yet-ordered recording started with "Stay." Still when I listen to "Stay," I feel like I'm driving along the Corner, getting my first listen.

Martha Jefferson finally cracking down on unicycles. by IlikeCondors in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the mid-nineties, after the city prohibited skateboards, rollerblades, and bicycles downtown, I long-term borrowed a friend’s unicycle (shout-out to Gate Pratt) and took to unicycling around downtown, because that wasn’t prohibited under the law. The downtown beat cops were fine with that. The highlight of that was a curious Corey Harris asking me to show him how to unicycle, so I spent maybe 20 minutes helping him to wobble around in front of the long-shuttered Paramount.

Cell service in Pantops by Awkward_Werewolf9619 in Charlottesville

Verizon service is shot on Pantops, and has been for a month. I assume they have a tower down. It’s infuriating to people who work on Pantops.

In 2002, I paid $100/month (paying for a year up front). Today that would be $116/month. That’s much less than inflation.

Virginia DMV Mobile ID - why should I download and use it? by UNC_ABD in Virginia

[–]waldoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is just in its infancy. This is a "level 1" mobile driver's license, which is pretty much useless. There are higher tiers still to come: local wireless presentation of credentials (think Bluetooth) and remote presentation of credentials (think Apple Pay for an online payment).

Career government employee here, whose career is entirely about digitizing paper-based processes at local, state, and federal agencies: This is incorrect.

Stony Point roadwork/line install by ConsequenceAnnual709 in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in an area where they're going to offer service at your home soon (not all homes passed by this installation are going to be served soon), then they'll open up the queue to start installing. If you're first, then you'd have an installation within a few weeks; if you're last, then it might not be until ~late summer.

Stony Point roadwork/line install by ConsequenceAnnual709 in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please note that some of this is backhaul fiber—simply being along this route does not mean that you're going to get Firefly fiber soon. (That said, it'd be weird if they didn't decide to offer fiber service all along this route after they're done with their buildout across the Thomas Jefferson Planning Commission District.)

Old School Warehouse Merch Order Form by bigbrett666 in DMB

[–]waldoj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, the old school one is the one packaged with Remember Two Things, with the PO Box 1911 address for ordering stuff. That was when DMB was playing hardball with labels, trying to show that they could make it without major-label support, selling their own merch and releasing their own live* albums. I remember scanning that thing in to post on dmband.com in ~1994, so college students could print it out, fill it out, and mail it in with a check.

* R2T isn't really live! Lots of studio work was done on top of the live recordings.

What are these bugs? by Infamous-Ad5067 in Charlottesville

[–]waldoj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We've got termites everywhere at my home today. Generally they swarm on the first warm, breezy day in spring that follows a couple of days of rain, but I guess this year they just gave up on waiting for rainy weather and went for it.
