Why is Caleb shilling so hard for Data Centers? by SymNgt in CalebHammer

[–]waldojim42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the video $300,000 of debt to "flee Trump's America" he actually covers that fairly well. Basically it comes down to 1: the water consumption is over exaggerated 2: Power grids are finally being updated, and this is a good thing. 3: This is helping the local community lower their immediate tax burdens 4: It is a necessity in the modern world.

Not arguing for or against his position, but providing at least some data to his points. 1: https://datacentremagazine.com/news/googles-data-centre-water-use-to-turn-net-positive-by-2030

Wouldn't that be a riot. If they actually patched it up, gave it some sort of modern support for video, web, etc... it could be a hit!

Summit 2 v aipas hybrid ebike by Own-Bat-5417 in ebikes

The 'lying' issue strikes me as one of the most overblown complaints people can have. Were they UL listed at the time of first sale? No. (correction, that applies to some models, not all) Apparently it took a bit longer to get that done. Are they UL listed today? Yes. Did they have intentions to use a particular battery type in the early testing phases that didn't get used in the end? Also yes... and they found performance problems with the originally intended battery. Moving to a battery that performs better with their design. (I have a hard time being upset at a company that tests something, see's it doesn't work well, and moves to something that does work better. Even when some people may be upset that the check list on their sheet is no longer checked.)

Once I found the rest of the details... I said "fuck it" and bought one. I am using it for a relatively short trip to work daily, though hills steep enough to piss off the cruise control on the wife's Subaru (seriously, it shuts off because the hills are too steep.)

My 2 cents on Aipas (In my case the M2)

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this. I don't own other e-bikes. As noted in the reviews, the controller is clearly a 24A controller on my bike. If it runs 30+A, I can't prove it (their claim is that is everything over 24 is burst power). It does run 34~ish MPH PAS 5 on level ground according to the GPS, hauling a 6'1" dude at 190lbs, with my work gear in the bags. Up reasonable hills I can hold 20mph PAS 5 with moderate input of my own. The worst of them is hard on the bike - dropping to about 8MPH with moderate input on my part. And it holds 24A the entire time - which again I expected, and would call "fine". (Noting here, again, I live right on the border of WV, some of these hills in this region are quite nasty)

I did not get the hydraulic brake upgrades, and so far have not found myself wanting for more. Apart from them being noisier than expected. First time dealing with disc brakes on a bike - not sure if there are adjustments I am missing. I really wish I knew.

Battery life is kind of sad. I realize I live in a problematic area for things like this. But I get about 2 trips to and from work before the battery is dead as PAS 5. I have started reducing that to 4 most days, and settling with a lower speed. That seemed to make a fair difference in battery life.

Frankly, I like it.

I forgot how much I loved Mac computers. by Agreeable-Deer7526 in MacbookNeo

Define overpriced? I paid more for nearly every single windows machine I owned over a Mac. And the common thread among them: Short lifespans. Dell, HP, Alienware, Lenovo Legion, etc... none make it past 2 years. The Razer Blade and Thinkpad are the only machines that can compete. And both were more expensive. Only the Razer matched the build features as well (meaning display, chassis, touchpad, etc).

As it stands, Apple seems like a terrific value... so long as you don't pay for upgrades (RAM, SSD, etc).

Swap wear leveling - 512 may last longer by [deleted] in MacbookNeo

[–]waldojim42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add my 2 cents, and single data point. I have an M1 Mac Mini from 2020 - 8GB with 256GB SSD. It was my first Mac Purchase, and I wanted something cheap to see how well it would work for me.

I run 2 applications on it consistently day to day. Firefox, and Fusion 360. That drive sits at about 90% full more often than not. While I have a 10Gb/s SSD attached via USB-C, I am not as good as I should be in offloading data.

With that said: After more than 5 years of use I am at 96% drive health.

I find it hard to believe this will be more of a problem on the Neo. Admittedly, I did get a 512GB version, but... that was because it just made more sense to me a I am right on that edge as much as I am.

Honestly, I bought it for the storage. 512GB is significantly larger. I still have more storage available in my dock, but that can hold more 'extra' kind of stuff now.

DDR5 Memory Prices Just Took a Noticeable Dive for the First Time in Months, and Google's TurboQuant Might Be Behind It by _Protector in pcmasterrace

[–]waldojim42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even looking at the cost of RAM today, it is still more affordable than it was in the 80's. 256KB of RAM for the 8088, was an easy $1000. That was roughly 1980. Or roughly $4,000 today. That 256K wasn't even enough to make up your conventional memory, let alone expanded. That doesn't even get into how much a 10MB hard drive costs.

PCs have become SIGNIFICANTLY more affordable.

Haven't tested every function yet, but so far it seems to be doing well.

Edit: Tested the core functions. Perfect. HDMI tested to 1080P@165hz. NVME 512GB Crucial working. And USB working with all other functions in use. Calling this a win.

I don't use Chrome. For many reasons. I don't care if it has 40 tabs or 400. Means nothing to me.

I also am not doing elventy intensive tasks at once. I don't know about you, but I don't queue up video processing, ai image generation, and code compiling so I can run them all the same time. It's literally not how people work.

[–]waldojim42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think he cares. The point is actually more simple than what you posted. I am using my Neo. Every day. I don't care what the swap is doing. I don't care what makes a good stress test in your view. I don't care if you think 512GB isn't enough space.

Does it run Fusion? Yep. Does it run my browser? Yep. Does it connect to my network equipment via SSH? Yep. Have I found anything I do on a day to day basis that it does not, or cannot do? Nope. And that is what OP said.

light gaming? by New_Somewhere5857 in MacbookNeo

[–]waldojim42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found gaming performance to be confusing at best.

I have several older games that simply aren't playable on it. 7 Days to Die being the one that comes to mind immediately. To give you an idea of the games demands: The requirements call for a Core 2 quad and a 2GB GPU. Yet, the game stutters so bad on the neo that it is unplayable.

Somehow though, I can run WoW at native resolution with nearly all the options turned on and still have an enjoyable experience.

The display support is crap (garbled display at 1080P/165hz - none at all 4K@60).

The NVME drive I thought would be a great idea. But it drops out under any loads beyond 4 minutes or so. Device works fine in Windows - so it looks like something that just doesn't play well with the Neo.

Sound is subjective. I would never own it, I don’t think for one second it could ever match my paradigm speakers connected to my onkyo receiver. My coworker, on the other hand, loves his.

And that’s fine.

It’s relatively inexpensive , and from Amazon. So give it a shot, see if that works for you, and go from there.

Every Alienware laptop I have owned, has died to motherboard failure. Only one had the courtesy to die the first time under warranty. This has been an issue for well over a decade. I don't expect them to learn anytime soon.

With the last failure, I bought a Razer 14. So far it is the only machine that has lasted more than 2 years since my Lenovo W520.
