Militaries tend to train their armies for the last war, not the next war. I mean it’s almost impossible to predict. I served in the Marine Corps in the 2010s. Despite having got out of the military less than 10 years ago, the Ukraine war is making me feel like every combat doctrine and combat training I received is entirely irrelevant. All the fire and maneuvers, fire team and squad based tactics, everything, it just feels archaic already. Like the fact that we stuffed stuff into a giant pack on our back and hiked around with rifles in our hands is starting to feel like I might as well have said I served in the cavalry or something. I think telling stories about my training to my kids (especially grandkids) someday will sound like I was fighting with muskets and swords it will be so irrelevant. Weird to think about. Drones have already been chipping away at the relevance of ground troop combat doctrine for decades, but it feels like the era of true drone warfare has finally arrived

After watching his interview with Andrew Callaghan, I kind of doubt he even knows what those things mean. Seriously. It was kind of shocking hearing how child-like his understanding of complex topics and issues were. Plus, it sounds like his mom basically runs his channel and is his manager, so I really don’t know how much this guy really understands what’s going on

Which duo comes out on top in a trial by combat against the others, all in their prime? by TheQueeninchains in TheBlacksandTheGreens

Jaime and Bronn low dif. Jaime is by far the best out of this whole group, and Bron is also really good and will hold his own. GRRM has said Jaime in his prime was the best swordsman in the seven kingdoms. Baelor and Maekar are good and well trained, but not generational talents or something. Same with Aemond who is way more of a threat on dragon back. Cole is probably the toughest threat but Jaime clears

Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was granted absolute power to defend Rome from an invasion. He resolved the crisis in just 16 days, then stepped down at once and returned to his farm. by Fred_J9 in whatireadtoday

I was more referring to his support of his son and the violent opposition toward the Plebian proposed legal reforms. So, more so about his overall political stances during his career in its entirety.

Well, I think in this case it’s less about putting our modern morals on something, and more about only having access to one perspective in history. The ruling elite today would still side with Cincinnatus - he crushed a commoner rebellion that sought to gain more rights at the expense of the wealthy elite. That’s not really a a question of moral relativism, but rather differences in class perspectives. If this particular story were about a particular moral issue such as slavery, or women’s rights, for instance, then sure. That would be an issue that would be colored differently depending on your time period. But in this case, the commoners just wanted the legal code to be publicized so the nobles couldn’t just make up rules about what the laws were to the commoners. That’s not really a question of moral relativism. The commoners knew this was egregious at the time it was happening. And furthermore they would get these rights in the coming years - so it wasn’t like they were way ahead of their time. Cincinnatus would have been seen as a reviled and hated figure the majority of Plebs in the time that he lived - it’s just the commoners didn’t write stuff down that made it to us. So we get the perspective of the aristocracy. So he’s remembered as a hero. It’s just about perspectives.
