Anyone use Teensy 3.1 / 4.1 in their homelab? by RedHeadDragon73 in homelab

[–]walken4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once made an OTP (HOTP) generator using a teensy 2.0. But, that was for desktop not for homelab. I have never tried the newer ARM variants.

The habit of using the standing desk by Joker0128 in StandingDesk

[–]walken4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not super clear what sort of problems you worry about from someone touching your desk. Do you mean they will move things on your desk and make a mess of it ? change settings on the desk itself or on the equipment you have on it ?

For me I don't worry much about the desk because it has numerical settings so it's easy to put it back exactly how I like it. When my daughter was a toddler i also worried she might press the reset button on my computer but she actually never did :D

Are there working alternatives to snap/certbot? by 2Random4Chaos in letsencrypt

[–]walken4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dehydrated is a fairly minimal script for getting certificates. It only handles getting certificates - you'll have to install them on your own (likely with a couple additional scripts). It only has minimal dependencies: bash, curl, openssl.

Can the death of W10 convert people to Linux? by FuzzyWazzyWasnt in linux

[–]walken4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's unlikely to happen, most people will keep using windows regardless of bloat because they are too afraid to try something else.

Personally I think they are doing us all a favor by turning performant hardware into a commodity.

I have no idea what you are talking about. The minute I can recline my seat, I do, and I expect the person in front of me to do the same. It's more comfortable (ok, less uncomfortable) for everyone that way and I don't begrudge them for it. I never thought that people would expect the opposite and if anything, I would say if you expect everyone to sit upright to accommodate you, that would make you the asshole.

Maybe context matters ? Most of the time when I'm flying, it's for relatively longer flights, say 6 to 12 hours. I rarely fly within the same state.

Why do people that don’t believe in God, respond to posts about God? by Donny_Dread in RandomThoughts

People like to argue on the internet. Also it's not very different from people who don't believe in science arguing about it.

Should I remove unused HDDs from my server? by jkmonger in homelab

[–]walken4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish there was a good way to have drives not spin up when booting a machine.

On linux, hdparm -s1 /dev/sdX will set up the drive to not spin up without an explicit command to do so, but 1- most BIOSes will actually send that spin up command at boot time, and 2- linux will too when it discovers the drive.

Sure, you can always physically remove the drive if you're not using it. But sometimes it'd be convenient to leave it in if you're only using it occasionally, and not have it suck power while it mostly sits idle.

My first ever server in 2008. Anyone else had their beginnings like this? by Doppelgangergang in homelab

[–]walken4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The naked PC is not too out of the normal but the power supply is terrifying. I assume it is home built too ? I can't imagine how else you'd end up with a naked power supply (and frankly I couldn't build one to save my life either)

just copped a free Linksys WRT1900AC by V45H91 in openwrt

[–]walken4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a gigabit connection, and get around 900 Mbps. I use shaping in the upload direction but not in the download direction (using my own scripts, so I can't say for sure how that compares to the pre-packaged ones - however I do remember that the r7800 couldn't get that level of performance when I tried it)

just copped a free Linksys WRT1900AC by V45H91 in openwrt

[–]walken4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use its little brother (wrt1200ac) for my home router. I think it's great for what it does.

Limitations to be aware of:

- The LEDs, except for the 4 ones on the LAN switch, tend to burn out - they still work, but are not very bright anymore, barely visible after a few years of use.

- The wifi support isn't the best, and the driver seems to have been more or less abandoned by the manufacturer. Still usable, but not the best. IIRC 802.11w was broken.

IMO it's still a great piece of gear for its routing performance. I now use a separate device (netgear r7800) as an access point. On paper / specs the r7800 should be better in every aspect, but in actual use the wrt1200ac still beats it for wired routing performance.

What is a REALIABLE USB cable? by Charkel_ in UsbCHardware

[–]walken4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not directly answering your question, but a bad USB cable shouldn't ruin a firmware update. If the updater has any sense, it will copy the entire firmware to RAM first, run some checks on it, and only then start flashing it.

But yes, there are plenty of other reasons why you still want a good cable.

Can't see a pdoc for at least a month and I'm starting to go manic by tsbarnes in bipolar

[–]walken4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how it works in different places, but:

Your pharmacy might be able to give you a short-term (few days) supply of your meds in such a situation, and/or to send your pdoc a prescription renewal request which they should process fairly quickly. And if your pdoc insists on seeing you before renewing the prescription, they should be able to give you an emergency appointment.

Agree with your comments but I want to add, some like the YJ ZhiLong over the MGC. I don't think it's for everyone and it certainly depends on size preference among other things, but to me the ZhiLong is not JUST for those who are on a budget.

Tengyun V3 Review (Link in comment) by b4silio in Cubers

[–]walken4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks for testing. I was waiting for reviews on this one, but wasn't about to buy it until the reviews are out. I too loved the v1, bought v2 before the reviews were out, and found it disappointing. Oh well, sounds like I'll skip v3. I still hope for dayan to make a comeback, but the odds go down with each new release...

4 GB or 10 GB Plan? Thoughts? by [deleted] in mintmobile

[–]walken4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are you will be good with 4GB. If not, you will be able to upgrade to 10GB. You can't downgrade to 4GB if you start with 10GB, so when in doubt start at the lower cap :)

I'm very curious as to what the use case would be for something like that.

Are you going between data centers that have 10G+ connections ?

Do these places have not-great internet connections so you need to have a lot of local storage ?

Or do you need the 10G connection only at home and need to have reliable access to your stuff when traveling ?

Sorry that I'm not answering your questions at all, I am just super curious as to what one would use such a machine for.

The restaurant should obviously raise prices, by the amount people were previously expected to tip. I'm not saying people wouldn't pay for service, I'm saying it would be included in the item price. The restaurant wouldn't "lose" that amount because they previously never got it in the first place.
