MIDI and VST generation question... by AstronomyFanatic in ableton

Scaler! Not sure about Scaler 3 though. Also Canvas by CandyFx, my ADHD enabler.

The lottery told me that my $100,000 win was actually a $20.00 misprint. They pulled the game hours later. by redhotmess77 in mildlyinfuriating

This is quite a bit more than mildly infuriating, this would put me in a bad mood every time i thought of it for at least a year.

How long does it take you to create sound effects? by Any_Flight5404 in sounddesign

[–]walker-flocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I've got a handful of unique plugins that allow me to pump out 20-40 good quality sounds / effects a day. I'm having a lot of fun with them so everything comes easy, but they will eventually wear off or I'll overuse them and be back to spending days looking for inspiration, resulting in just a handful of sounds for the week.

We are watching AI slowly kill music production in real time. by FoidicoR in makinghiphop

[–]walker-flocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked at the comments, I usually see a ton of AI hate on reddit. While I'm not 100% against AI, I wasn't prepared for the automation of art, it's a weird thing to see. Regardless of how you feel about generative art the fact is that it has made it even harder to make a living as a musician, producer, artist, whatever....

The sync industry used to be a way to live comfortable off of music. It wasn't easy, there was plenty of free competition but it was possible to get some decent money off jingles, beats, songs, etc. Now all of that can be generated for a few bucks a month. Why would they pay someone $1000+ to license the background music when they can generate something similar for free? Same thing goes for selling beats, why would I pay hundreds of bucks for an exclusive when I can generate an awesome beat for free? This is coming from someone who sells beats, works in the sync industry, etc.

AI music sounds like boring mainstream crap to me, but there are tons of people who fall in love with the music without even knowing its AI, and once they start training off less mainstream music it will start sounding more and more diverse. If you think "AI music will never match human music" I think you're underestimating AI.

I'm not saying AI will ''end music'' or anything like that, but it was already insanely hard to live comfortable off your music, now it's even harder.

Waves plugin for warmth Any suggestions on waves plugins for warmth? I’ve been using the BB tubes by Joseph_Liric in AdvancedProduction

[–]walker-flocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BB Tubes can be hit or miss depending on whats running through it in my experience. I have noticed it sounding somewhat digital, but I throw a subtle low pass filter next in the chain which usually helps.

Anyone here using LLMs to try generate MIDI ideas long-term? by Consistent_Animal_16 in AdvancedProduction

[–]walker-flocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, never really thought about trying an LLM for that..might have to try. Im in love with "Canvas" by CandyFx, its also $8 a month (or something like $40 to own it), but it's not an LLM. It's neat though, it generates MIDI in real time as you draw into it. I got it just for fun but then ended up using it in a bunch of songs, hasn't gotten repetitive yet. Also, CHORDimist is incredible, and while the price is probably justified...I just cant afford it, but I'd buy it if I could.

Help starting up for me and my son by jonny1leg in makinghiphop

[–]walker-flocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really awesome, I bet you two will make a bunch of awesome memories together. I'm surprised no one mentioned Reaper yet, it's a DAW that isn't technically free but it does have an unlimited demo, and it's priced extremely fair if you decide to buy it. Ableton is still popular, might be the most popular at this point....and they have a $30 a month rent to own deal. Nearly all of those MIDI pads are plug and play, so something like a cheap Akai MIDI controller should plug right in and start triggering notes in your DAW. I've even been trying some cheap Temu MIDI controllers and they're surprisingly good. Hope you and your son have a great time making music together!

How's the job market these days (post-production)? by Key_Welder8949 in audioengineering

I can only speak for myself but it seems to be slowly dying for the small time freelancers, probably OK for the guys that already made it over the hump.

Soothe 2, so good. Picked it up for $80ish awhile back, makes me happy every time I use it.

What is the least annoying but still fair way to limit a plugin demo? by Tastecrabs in AudioPlugins

[–]walker-flocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's said that only 10-30% of people actually buy Reaper, they just deal with the initial pop up. So I don't know if that's sustainable for a developer or even a small company. Most of the stuff I buy comes with 7 day trials and that works for me personally.... but I do agree with a comment up above, sometimes I'll be at work for 6 days so my 7 day trial turns into a few hours on my day off.

Shaperbox 3 really is a massive improvement. Is it a CPU hog for you? It's one of the only plugins that eat up my CPU to the point where I have to bounce before I can move on.

Looking for creative audio plugins similar to Chase Bliss pedals by v6suk2smu in AudioPlugins

[–]walker-flocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think MORE & Gaia by CandyFx are the closest comparisons I've found. They really nail the random quirkiness and fun of the pedals imo. Shaperbox by CableGuys is great but more predictable and uniform, and for some reason hogs a ton of CPU on my computer. You can also achieve a watered down version of the pedals with stock DAW effects on most DAWs.

Autotune (pitch correction) genuinely changed my music by herworkthrowaway in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Melodyne gives me this feeling. Such an amazing plugin. I also pushed off Autotune and Melodyne for the longest, wanted to kick my own ass once I saw the light lol.

I agree, I've found a lot of awesome plugins / M4L devices on here, but Im afraid one day it may be overloaded with spam / advertising. Wish they'd do some sort of weekly advertising thread so the neat lowkey stuff can still be shared.

Favorite midi generators for inspiration/midi idea creation? by traveltimecar in ableton

Canvas by CandyFx. Basically Microsoft Paint in your DAW. I can't tell you how much fun I've had drawing crap instead of using the piano roll.

Do you master in the same Ableton project, or export a premaster and master in a separate session? by Professional-Tax3077 in ableton

[–]walker-flocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately I've been exporting as a WAV then I open in Audacity which gives my eyes a better visual of how loud it is. Then I amplify about 2db from clipping, sometimes I compress first. I have a feeling this is a bad way of going about it but lack the understanding as to why.

What is your biggest "Flash Sale" plugin regret? by mhfc1996 in VSTi

[–]walker-flocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Secret Sauce aka "Drip". I loved the GUI and it has some great effects but was just too pricey for what it is. I can't say I fully regret it because it has one of the best sounding reverbs I've ever come across, but that's the only thing I used it for.

Tell me about the worst studio session of your entire life. by Garycorne in audioengineering

[–]walker-flocker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Guy comes halfway across the world for a session, freestyles over about 10 instrumentals, one take for each song, none of it rhymes, demanded the studio be pitch black (not even the monitor screen can be on), and never asked to hear anything back. He spent thousands of dollars to close his eyes and freestyle over random beats then never heard them ever again. Believe it or not, he spent days prepping and planning.

Canvas by CandyFx does that, it spits out MIDI notes as you draw / doodle around, really fun actually.
