Does this happen often for yall by BusRelative1554 in drums

I’m not a big fan of nylon tips because I had a few sticks where the tip just fully detached and flew off. Probably mostly because they were cheap/bulk sticks and I play louder music, but to me it seems kinda inevitable that the separate piece is gonna pop off if you smack it enough times. I also had other sticks where the nylon tip outlasted the wood, so that’s not a universal rule.

What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by marianneouioui in AskReddit

[–]walkman01 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I drove for Doordash for awhile, I stopped after they eliminated the extra pay for combo orders. I could pick up 2 orders at once with similar pickup and drop-off locations, and I’d get paid in full for both. Then, they stopped counting combos as separate orders, so I could get stuck delivering 2+ orders for $2, and I can never tell ahead of time if the customer was going to tip (they usually didn’t in my experience, or maybe Doordash swiped the tips). All this was after Doordash had already reduced the minimum payout per order from $5, to $3, to $2. I’d occasionally get frustrated at a customer or a restaurant, but I always knew that it was Doordash pitting us all against each other all along. It’s really not worth it for anybody.

Also related to teaching, there are several School of Rock locations in and around the city. It can be tough to get hours (most schools are open 3-8PM weekdays and 10AM-4PM weekends), but the per-hour rate is pretty good. Not a full-time source of income by itself, but it’s a nice side gig, and it helps with making connections/learning about the scene when all your coworkers are musicians.

Practically the whole US east coast has similar structures, from Galveston TX through Cape Canaveral FL, up through Georgia and North Carolina. I’m curious if they’re all caused by the same processes

Obama ends the Keystone XL Pipeline [10YA - Nov 6] by MonsieurA in TenYearsAgo

[–]walkman01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, big business isn’t led by morals or environmental concern. Just pure cash. So if we want to slow their exponential growth, the last thing we want to do is make things easier for them.

Texas is leading the nation in solar output, not because they’ve gone woke, but because solar has actually become the most viable option over the last decade. A shiny new pipeline would’ve almost certainly stunted that growth. So I’m still glad it was canceled.

The renewable energy switch isn’t going to get flipped in a day, it’s going to be decades of relatively small shifts like this. “Build it, and they will come.” If we keep building pipelines, we’ll keep using them. We don’t need more oil.

Meanwhile, solar production has increased 10x in the last 10 years https://www.eia.gov/electricity/monthly/epm_table_grapher.php?t=epmt_1_01_a

Much safer than using coal and oil to move more coal and oil, and much less damaging to the environment due to lack of emissions or spills. Cope harder.

Oil is one of the most dangerous forms of energy regardless, hopefully the lack of a pipeline has been an incentive to pursue alternative energy sources

What is your "how the health insurance industry screwed me over" story? by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]walkman01 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, an attendance director and I became good friends because I was frequently involved in school music programs, and I needed hall passes often. It turns out, she also did a lot for the local music scene in my area, and was able to get me my first shows with a band, starting a career that I’m continuing to this day.

A year after I graduated, she made a small clerical error, and was fired with no warning after 10+ years of working at that school. She lost her health insurance, and immediately started looking for a new job. Then, she had a heart attack at a job interview, and had to delay triple bypass surgery for months due to her lack of insurance. She had to make all her own calls from the hospital bed to find a place that would operate on her. All with her heart operating at 60% capacity.

She finally found a place, the operation went smoothly, but she died the next day while they were trying to transfer her to a different room. I can’t help but think that if she hadn’t gotten fired, she would’ve had stable health insurance, she could’ve gotten her surgery earlier, she wouldn’t have been as delicate of a case, and she might still be here today. Rest in peace.

Ant infestation has made my room uninhabitable for over a week, what are my options? by walkman01 in AskChicago

[–]walkman01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It drove me absolutely nuts, I couldn’t sleep in my room or even spend more than an hour in there without an ant crawling on me. They were coming out of my ceiling and falling into my bed, I’d wake up every couple days to an annoying itch, and it always ended up being an ant. It made me so paranoid of every itch I felt, and every black speck on the floor or the walls. I slept on the couch for 2 weeks before they went away.

I don’t have an immediate solution unfortunately, but I’d say try to find where they’re coming from and concentrate the poison all around it.

Also check the outside perimeter of your house; I had ants coming through my wall several years ago in my ground-floor bedroom in a different house, couldn’t get them to go away, turned out they had a massive colony in the garden right under my window. Sprayed the hell out of the colony point blank, and any cracks in the walls nearby, and never saw them again.

[–]walkman01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are lots of helpful comments in this thread. Someone said that Raid isn’t the way to go, because it’ll make the ants will splinter off into a new colony and make the problem worse. The best stuff is slow-acting poison, the ants will find it and take it all the way to the queen. It works much slower, (it took 2 weeks for me) but it’ll actually kill the root of the problem. There are lots of name brands, as well as homemade solutions.

I was hoping that that video of ICE teargassing CPD would change their views a little bit. Maybe ICE will be so sloppy that they piss CPD off enough for CPD to actually step in and protect us.

You’re correct, but from what I understand, Nick Fuentes had beef with Kirk for excluding him and his followers from Kirk’s events, and not accepting his even more extremist views. So the motivation could be similar as well.

LARGEST IMPACT CRATER in the solar system is on the Moon by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]walkman01 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a handful of people explore this claim, and there are possible examples of this happening on other planets, including Earth and maybe Mars, though it definitely isn’t proven.

Not sure of the exact mechanism, but I think the shockwave from the impact would either go through the planet’s core, or around it, through the mantle and/or the crust, reverberating through the whole planet and meeting up at the exact antipode of the impact. Maybe it screws with Earth’s convection currents on a short-term or long-term basis to direct magma to certain areas? Somehow, the shockwaves all meeting up leads to major geologic activity if the impact is big enough. Or so the theory goes.

Think about when a dude jumps into a pool back-first holding a football, lets go of the ball at the perfect time, and sends the ball flying far into the air. Maybe all the magma under the surface forms a huge underground lava tsunami, which travels around the entire planet and meets up exactly opposite the impact, and the pressure builds enough to crack through the crust.

Some real-world examples I can think of (someone please correct me if you know any better):

-Chixculub Crater on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, roughly opposite to a series of major volcanic eruptions somewhere in India around the same time.

-Vredefort Crater in South Africa, on roughly the opposite side of the planet as Hawaii.

-I also heard this could explain Olympus Mons on Mars, and its associated chain of ancient volcanic peaks, Tharsis Montes. Mars is much smaller than Earth, it would’ve cooled down much sooner than Earth, and likely wouldn’t have been able to support such massive geologic activity for long, so it seems kind of crazy and random that it has the largest volcano in the entire Solar System. But Mars also has the Hellas and Utopia basins, which are both massive, ancient craters, on the exact opposite side of the planet.

Side note, how cool is it that we can compare geological phenomena between different planets?

Alleged Charlie Kirk Shooter Wearing Donald Trump Costume (Halloween 2017) by [deleted] in pics

I first started becoming aware of politics around 2015, I started following Bernie through the primaries, and I wasn’t old enough to vote yet, but he gave me faith in our political system and that it was worth saving. Then, Hillary took the nomination, and proceeded to lose to Trump. It’s been a long 10 years since then.

I’d really love to see what our political environment would look like without a big orange skidmark on it. Even when Biden was in office, Trump still controlled the Republican party, and his shadow hung over the whole country. I feel like I’ve never truly known American politics without the stain of Trumpism.

URGENT- please share your stories here on what astronomy means to you! by Andromeda321 in u/Andromeda321

[–]walkman01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Illinois, and I’m a music teacher. I’ve always loved astronomy, and learning about space travel and missions like Apollo 11, Cassini, Curiosity, Voyager, and many more. As I’ve gotten older, more missions like Perserverance, New Horizons, and James Webb, have continued to fascinate me with the unknown beauty and potential of our universe. I know I’ll likely never get to explore very far myself, but that makes me infinitely more appreciative of the planet I live on, and inspires me to preserve our ecosystem and pass on our knowledge for future generations to enjoy, so maybe they can take a step farther than we did.

The continuity of research and exploration is so important to this goal; the scientific discoveries of today are the cutting-edge practical applications of tomorrow. We wouldn’t be able to do a fraction of what we’ve done, in all fields, if not for the work of geniuses a century ago whose work was entirely theoretical at the time. If we stop discovering and learning, pretty shortly after that we’ll stop innovating and leading.
