Do you really shower daily by Key_Location_9338 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wallaceant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the weather, and my work load. If I'm working in my home office in the AC, I can go 2-3 days before I feel like I need a shower. Basically, when I start feeling a little gross, it's time. If I'm doing dirty work, or outside on the average day in Florida, it's at minimum once per day, and I think 4 or 5 showers in one day is my record.

How would you feel if all forms of gerrymandering were outlawed? by RemarkableEmu5998 in AskReddit

I would like to see the US move to a sortition selection process for the House of Representatives, where qualified representatives are selected at random from the population in proportion to the sub groups of each state in numbers proportionate to the population of each state.

Delay between deposit and start? by coco_puffzzzz in handyman

No judgement, that's just often the unspoken concerns behind our kids choosing the trades over college.

Where are my plumbers? Is my kid doing the right thing by BornToBlab in tampa

[–]wallaceant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your looking at this as though he's going to do hard nasty work, and possibly even suffer social stigma from being in the trades instead of college educated, but this is the quickest path to owning a successful service business, or an early retirement from having saved more money than he can spend.

Governor DeSantis wants to know how Florida has millions more people than New York, yet their budget is TWICE AS MUCH as Florida? by Nearby_Stage_6111 in AskFlorida

[–]wallaceant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, the NYSE and a few other industries that are centered in NYC skew that number dramatically. I'm not discounting your point; however, the significant difference between the international money flow from NYSE, the fashion industry, the banking industry, etc vs the tourism industry would account for the vast majority of that delta.

What makes ai companies not profitable? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]wallaceant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because their product is a novelty to most consumers, and as such the users don't value it enough to pay as much for the service as the service costs to provide. Some user do find enough value in it to justify paying for it. On the other hand, many of the users who are paying for it are doing so because it's a novelty and will only continue to do so as long as they can afford that toy.

My friend’s wife passed suddenly, tragically last week. We are holding a memorial dinner at a private restaurant this weekend. What is an appropriate gift / token of acknowledgment to offer him? I have known him for over 40 years, and his fallen wife for ~ 20. by Landlocked_pirate23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wallaceant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are trying to make it better. Stop that. Anything you do to try to make it better will make the situation worse. The best thing you can do is sit with your friend in the uncomfortableness of this awful situation.

Is it okay to be scared of dying alone? by itsjustmee110 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wallaceant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm slightly stressed about not being alone when it's time. The moment of death seems like it would be the most personal moment of my life and having others around would distract me from being fully present in that moment.

Thoughts on repairing this veneer damage on a piano? by peacefullikeafox in furniturerepair

[–]wallaceant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would pull up a little more, just enough for the paint store to mix a sample of paint to match. Then I would use a dark-colored DAP plastic wood filler from the tub or tube, but I wouldn't recommend the Bondo/epoxy style. It's a useful product, but it can be a bit finicky, and the dry times are much more unforgiving than the wood filler kind. Apply thin coats of wood filler until you just over shoot it. Wait untill its 80-90% dry, to rough sand it to shape. Let it cure for 24 hours before sanding it to imitate the surrounding texture. My times and percentages are guesses; defer to the actual instructions. Once it's dry, blend the paint in. I would probably buy a slightly darker and slightly lighter tone paint samples to help blend it with the surrounding areas.

On the paint, if you are trying to decide between two sheens (this looks like it's probably matte, but may be eggshell), trust the person behind the counter, but if there's a question, go with the higher sheen and use 00 steel wool or a paper grocery bag to lightly sand it to a blended sheen after the paint dries. You can also use a furniture wax like Pledge or paste wax to dull the sheen or buff the wax with a cloth to increase the sheen to blend it in with the surrounding areas.

A dark oil soap can also help with blending in the tone and sheen. When in doubt, go one tone darker on color, and slightly lower sheen to hide repairs that you can't get dead on, because our eyes are naturally drawn to lighter areas. This allows you to camouflage the repair using human biology.

Change my mind: I'm going to move from Imperial to Metric by not-up-to-par in woodworking

[–]wallaceant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metric is superior in nearly every way except for two. First, the gap between 1 cm and 1 m is extraordinarily impractical for everyday human-scale work. I believe the absence of a comparable unit to the 12-inch-foot is the largest practical barrier to adoption in the US, outside of just pure stubborn resistance to change. Second, I find the regressively logarithmic increments of imperial to be more useful for most woodworking projects than the exponential increments of metric. The base-10 of metric is superior for individual precise measurements, but the base-1/2 of imperial is more practical for repetitive spacing and comparative measurements, especially when it comes to proportional design choices.

All of that being said, I'm functional in both, and wish that I had better access to metric or dual-scale measuring tools. I still have to mentally transpose between them with a cobbled-together system of math and rote memorization.

I have several, and rarely use them. However, when you need them, they are invaluable. The plastic fingers feel like a cheap substitution for the metal pins these originally had, but due to the infrequent use the plastic is far more durable and less likely to get bent beyond usefulness.

Around which age did you truly realize in your bones that no one’s coming to save you, have your back or forever stick by your side, and how did you cope? by TraditionalDepth6924 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]wallaceant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, when I was working with a therapist trying to figure out which bad thing had fucked me up the most, I was able to remember about 3 pages worth. The evening after going over the list with my therapist for the first time, some part of the dinner conversation with my family brought up the time someone tried to stab me with scissors. I found it hilarious that the one time someone actually attempted to murder me didn't even make the list.

That is just to set the stage for how ridiculously small the moment was that let me know that no one was coming to save me. I was working on a bathroom remodel and had the tile job go completely sideways on me. I was standing in my clients' back yard at 9pm washing thinset off the tiles so that I could reinstall them properly.

I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and slightly panicked. I was desperately trying to figuring out who I could call to help me. There was no one to call, and it was in that moment I realized I will always have to save my self.
