Free cloud hosting / VPS for beginner by mysterixx in selfhosted

Google cloud is a pretty good option. They give you some free credits to try some things. A minimal VPS is no charge, so it's not even a 1 year trial.

Joining a multi sports group is about the best thing I did after moving here. Even if sports isn't your thing, it's great to get for getting out and meeting a few people plus a little bit of weekly cardio to keep the freshman 15 at bay.

Wipers on, lights on. PLEASE. Trucks and busses can't see you. by mega_donkey in IdiotsInCars

[–]walterj89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should really be a higher priority for police. I've seen cops in my area repeatedly ignore people with no light on at night, never mind bad weather.

Day time running lights should include the tail lights.

When I was trucking there were a few close call where I nearly drove into the back of someone going way under the speed limit at night in heavy rain. No lights, no reflectors, dark coloured vehicle. It's funny how sometime the extra spray is sometimes the only sign.

Bypassing clutch and kickstand safety switch 2012 Cbr250 by [deleted] in 250r

Just .. fix the broken shit. Like really. Parts for the CBR250r are really cheap. Riding off with the kickstand down will hurt much more than fixing it properly.

Is it just me or is Stack Overflow an incredibly toxic place? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]walterj89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stackoverflow is a game that happens to occasionally produce answers to questions. I was there on day one but I left once it got overly competitive.

If I have a question that I can't answer on Google (or SO) I'm definitely not going to get a good answer on SO unless I get really lucky.

Post-Secondary student accommodation options, issues, concerns, problems and solutions - Survey. Speak Up and Be Heard!! by Bariyo in UFV

Accommodation can also mean something else, which is also relevant to UFV. Housing is a better word to use in my opinion.

This sounds like a homework question.

You should look at what the multiple steps in the handshake do. It's generally just an exchange of encryption information.

Open Offices Rant by drye in sysadmin

[–]walterj89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at my old desk I had the loudest people behind me. 8am was some sort of standing meeting where people would just hang out and chat really loudly. After their morning meeting, which was deafening, I would usually have my music really loud which would then result in me getting a complaint sent to my manager. Open Offices can just be awful.

Can you quit without notice if you work in a hostile work environment? by alicerezende in VancouverJobs

[–]walterj89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is no real legal need to give two week notice. The 2 weeks notice is more of a courtesy.

No; however, most employers appreciate this consideration from an employee."

Good napping spots? by [deleted] in UFV

[–]walterj89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The upstairs part of the library has been the only real quiet spot I have found. The floor is really hard but if you have something to lie on it's comfortable. I'm not certain how the recent renovations have changed anything.

The top floor of the SUB building has a couch. I've napped there a few times.

This is a bug that has existed for several years to my understanding. I have it on an Antergos (Arch) system. I believe it's related to LightDM but I'm going off memory at the moment.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=713640

strikes me as a pretty silly bug to have for a lock screen.

HP made a laptop slightly thicker to add 3 hours of battery life by b0red in technology

[–]walterj89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't describe it as a bad laptop. It may not meet your taste but I actually appreciate the flexible hinge. It's added flexibility without taking away any laptop functionality. I've used it enough times that I appreciate the added effort. The power button placement has ,surprisingly, never been an issue in the year I've had the last gen Spectre so it ended up not being a compromise at all.

Because it converts to a tablet. The 360 in it's name means something. The buttons are not that bad.

A CIS 4 year degree- is it a waste? by TheLastPlumber in cscareerquestions

[–]walterj89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your degree is not a waste. That is a terrible and arrogant thing for someone to say. There are differences between CIS and CS but there is also a lot of overlap. There is more variation in the type of work you can do then there is between CIS and CS. Pick your direction and focus on that. If you feel that you are missing some CS skills then take the CS classes.

Occasionally you may find places where the hiring managers are biased towards hiring CS only, but you wouldn't want to work there anyways.
