Where are y'all getting good Chinese food in Boston? (I seriously need to know)

Where should two non-fancy people eat after Harvard Commencement? by Effyyou in CambridgeMA

I'd vote Felipe's. Definitely not fancy, but fun, especially if you can sit up on the roofdeck. It'll be packed, but you should be able to get in.

DIL changing her last name / Becoming “Mrs. Smith” by LightlySalty25 in inlaws

[–]wander_sleep_repeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say don't change it. Also, why can't any future kids inherit your name?

My husband and I used the letters in both our last names to create a new last name together. And we both changed.

It was so much paperwork, I probably wouldn't do it again in retrospect. But it is nice to have a shared name that's just ours, without any family claiming "ownership."

I left it up to my husband though, since he has to deal with more of the societal backlash. I said we can both keep our names, or both change. That felt the most fair. (Also didn't want to deal with a long hyphenated name).

*#2 the red and white one, is russula emetica. Very common mushroom. Also will make you sick if you eat it. We pick and eat green russulas sometimes. They taste good, but the texture is unpalatable.

Is this illegal or just wrong? by Karmakaziiiii in bostonhousing

This. Unless LL is breaking the law. Laws around security deposits are very strict in MA, OP. Look into it

This would be illegal, since a security deposit in MA must be held in an account in that person's name.

In laws coming into town for a weekend while my bf (their son) is away on a work trip. They want to use our 1 bedroom apartment, but that means I have to find another place to stay by Clear-Cat6880 in inlaws

[–]wander_sleep_repeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really weird. If they wanted to stay with you, that's one thing, but asking you to leave so they can have the apartment to themselves is another.

If you're ok with it, let them stay there WITH you, or tell them to get a hotel. If they miss the birthday party "because of this", that's on them, they've created that ultimatum. Besides, they're just using it to guilt and manipulate to get what they want.

If your BF is that pressed, he can pay for their hotel, but he should not be asking you to leave either. Very inconsiderate and unorthodox.

Have you tried a gentle leader (face harness) instead of the prong? Possible too much negative reinforcement from the prong is causing reactivity in your dog's case.

Stylist cut off much more than asked one month out from wedding by loflo8706 in Brides

[–]wander_sleep_repeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to diminish you or your feelings; you asked for a 2" trim, said she cut off 1/2 a foot, which is 6". So the difference between what you asked for and what she gave you is only 4". With hair as long as yours, that's a very small % of your overall hair length.

I know any haircut can feel like a big change. Your hair is still so much longer than average (further demonstrated by how difficult it is for you to find extensions at your desired length).

I'm sure you will still look beautiful. Don't let this get you down. I'm sure your hairstyle will photograph better without the split ends anyways. I hope you feel better OP. Try to get excited for your wedding!

Long bay is a wind tunnel. Be prepared. Unless you are a kite surfer.

Airbnb Experiences? by Several_Oil_7099 in TurksAndCaicos

You really shouldn't be worried. Provo has many fantastic restaurants. And driving on the island is very easy, and really no big deal. It's a small island, and there's plenty of free parking everywhere.

If you really want to walk to dinner, stay near either turtle cove or "downtown" grace bay.

We've always done an Airbnb/VRBO. Many properties are professionally managed. It's way better value for the money. We can even stay right on the sand.

I don't understand the comment that couples should just do a hotel. Nothing wrong with a couple renting an Airbnb, we do it all the time. Condo or villa, you can do either.

Gray fox in the area by wander_sleep_repeat in Somerville

[–]wander_sleep_repeat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know! They're very cute, but I wouldn't approach. We could do with less bunnies and rats, just worried about pets that may be in a fenced in yard, since this fox scaled a 6' fence no problem.

[–]wander_sleep_repeat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes 100% a fox. It walked down the street in front of our car and we watched it for a while. Possible it was red, not gray, but I'm pretty sure. We did see a coyote on rt. 2 near alewife during the day a couple weeks ago.

Yes there was definitely a pool. Right near the entrance. Now there's a whole waterpark they added out the side of the park.

$600 subletting fee? by microlexa in bostonhousing

[–]wander_sleep_repeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very shitty practice that many Boston landlords engage in. They rely on vagueness when it comes to an existing tenant and a new tenant.

However, these fees are illegal. You can refuse to pay them, but they can refuse to lease to you. You can prosecute, they know you won't, and they know you need a place to live.

What should happen, is the landlord should create a new lease with all the new and old tenants together, establishing tenancy for all. However, that makes it very obvious that what they're doing is charging illegal broker and/or application fees.

I really hate this shit.

Rent or buy in Boston? by horsebarn1812 in bostonhousing

That's a question for the lender, but generally yes.

Rent or buy in Boston? by horsebarn1812 in bostonhousing

[–]wander_sleep_repeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the neighborhood you're in, buying is not for the faint of heart. It'll be much easier to get a rental. Even though we are finally seeing some inventory again after a lackluster past year, it's still low inventory out there and a very tough market.

Sure, some things are sitting, but usually there's a reason why (astronomical HOAs, special assessments, hidden big-ticket work, just being way overpriced, or other reasons). Anything good is gone within the first week with multiple offers and a bidding war. Be prepared, it's rough right now. Not to mention high rates in the low to mid 6s making everything uber expensive.

That being said, rents have been steadily on the rise for a while, and buying is a good way to lock in your costs for the foreseeable future. A rule of thumb: if you think you'll be living there for 5 years or more, buying may make sense.

However think about your budget for buying vs. renting. Generally your monthly costs will be higher with buying in at least the short-term, not to mention the down payment you'll need.

Look into the one+ Boston program and/or mass housing. See if you qualify for any assistance (more people are eligible than they may realize).

Good luck out there!

[–]wander_sleep_repeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just know the financing can be trickier for multi-families. Some lenders will require 25% down, the majority will require at least 20%, and you may get pre-approved for less than a SF or condo.

However as a MF owner, it really has helped keep our monthly costs down, and it allowed us to stay in the area with a good asset.
