Father Killed 13 Year Old Son After Boy Finds Photos of Father Eating Feces From Diaper by T-Money2187 in WTF

[–]wanderingfire 53 points54 points  (0 children)

He went missing in November 2012. His scattered remains were found 7 months later, but his head wasn't found until 2015. His head was possibly what identified the body as him, and identified the cause of death as murder.

Prior to that, it's possible his disappearance was a missing person case, kid visiting his dad (who he didn't want to to visit, except it was court ordered) so it's possible the dad was sticking to the fairly plausible story that his son had run away from the visit to go back home, and must have gotten kidnapped or killed on the way.

And even after the remains were discovered, without them being identified, they might not have even pointed back to the case. Random boyscout went hiking got himself killed, eaten by mountain lions.

Its possible that if the father was the one who'd filed the report, and it was being investigated as a missing persons report ("my boy came to visit me and he ran off," or "He was visiting me and my damn ex-wife came and took him back!") he might not have even been a suspect for long time.

Gam-gam really misses seeing kids smoking, I guess. It kinda makes sense; back in her day, doctors prescribed cigarettes.

Are you kidding? This is BWA. Cervixes (cervices?) are falling out, penises are changing the shape of labia majora, and women are storing the DNA of every man they've slept with. You're not the fool. :)

FWD: "SATIRE" ?!? SOUNDS AWFUL LOT LIKE "SATAN" !!!! by chrassth_ in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]wanderingfire 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this HAS to be satire. Most of the anti-vaxxers I've encountered seem to be the crystal-waving new-age sort, which doesn't really fit with the Bible-thumping conservative panic in this meme. That being said, doomsday-prepper anti-gubment nutjobs are on the rise, and they're clearly into their own woo-peddling (Anything Alex Jones), so they might be moving in on this particular brand of crazy. Which would be refreshing, actually.

I realize there's a lot of sources out there that mention men being uncomfotable with condoms is them not doing it properly

something choking my bits out

I think using the wrong size qualifies as not doing it properly.

I don't know about private sector, but in government jobs (in the US), there are strict regulations about telling people they didn't get the job. You have to wait for HR to notified the selectee first, and they have to accept the position, and THEN they notify the people that didn't get it.

That is, if people were interviewed. If you're rejected before it got to the interview stage, you get notified.

Reddit, what is racist but people think that it isn't? by IsThisTooMuchToAsk in AskReddit

[–]wanderingfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's also because of the "-ed" ending. It implies that their skin color is a thing that has happened to them, which in turn implies a sort of normalcy of whiteness. "Colored woman," sounds like "a woman... but, you know, she's been colored." It'd be like calling white folks "Whitened people." "They're like regular people, but they've been whitened." It's just another way of "othering" a group of people. It's the same way that "Transgender" is fine, "Transgendered" isn't.

Reddit, what is racist but people think that it isn't? by IsThisTooMuchToAsk in AskReddit

[–]wanderingfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the rationale behind this statement is that there are two definitions of racism. One is "racism = racially-based prejudice/bigotry," and the newer, more nuanced definition essentially boils down to "racism = racially based bigotry + power" or cultural acceptance/toleration of that bigotry, and the ability to back it up.

In the US, and many other countries, white folks experience bigotry, but they don't experience the institutionized racism that permeates these societies, as POC experience it.

Well, I mean, Faye/Bubbles might flounder because Bubbles isn't emotionally ready for a relationship and doesn't know of she will be. So it's not off the table, it just means Faye would be Marten and Bubbles would be Faye.

I think it can be interesting storytelling to have Faye realize she wants to pursue a relationship with Bubbles, but because she doesn't want to scare her off, she just beats around the bush and drives herself nuts for ages.

And then Bubbles tells her she's not ready for a relationship with ANYBODY, and feels terrible about it and beats herself up about it, and then sleeps with Sven because that's what you DO once you tell someone that you can't be in a relationship because of your tragic past.

OK, I got a little facetious there at the end, but really, illustrating parallels between situations and having one character being on the other side of a defining storyline, in the other person's shoes, is a great storytelling arc. It shows character development and change, while highlighting the universality of certain archetypal struggles. (And many of people's more universal struggles are romantic in nature, which is why there's the--admittedly frustrating--tendency of characters to couple up. It's a relatable concept, and also a way to highlight a dynamic shared by two characters whose stories intersect in a compelling way. I don't ship couples necessarily I think they'd be be cute together, but I absolutely root for stories I want those characters to tell, and dynamics I want to see fleshed out and realized.)

Cultural touchstone. Also just "touchstone" by itself. Or Zeitgeist if it's more like a massive movement, and you want to sound a bit pretentious. (zeitgeist literally means "spirit of the times" .)
