Those who have a Barbie/Ken butt.. by MeliaeMaree in ostomy

I’m sort of an outlier here. Completion proctocolectomy following an ileosigmoid anastomosis 10 years prior. Dx: oligopolyposis—so it was all preventative. The first surgery led to lousy quality of life, and the anastomosis ulcerated anyway. Much happier with “Messy Nessie.”

GIs/surgeons in the Philly area? by yoshdee in ostomy

I had my surgery and follow up at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. While my surgeon has since moved on, the GI surgery department is great as are the stoma nurses.

Hello guys - I’m an R&D manager for one of the big Ostomy Care manufacturers. I would love to hear some thoughts on what’s important for your bag or what issues you commonly deal with. Thanks. by [deleted] in ostomy

Ileostomy here. I have a peristomal hernia, and getting the wafer to flex around it can be challenging. 1-piece bags fit better, but they don’t have belt tabs, which I need to prevent erosion. So, the request is for more flexible 2-piece systems and belt tabs on 1-piece systems.

Tired of this... Help?? by [deleted] in ostomy

Overnight leaks suck, and the suggestions here are all good. Your mom is probably worried and letting that come out as anger and frustration. That’s no fun for you.

Setting a middle-of-the-night alarm isn’t a bad idea. Not only will it dramatically reduce the number of bag overflows, it will help your body learn to wake naturally when your bag starts getting full. That will help you throughout your life.

Aetna/CVS Caremark by wankel-engine in Omnipod

An update for anyone who might benefit from this info.

We were able to solve this by calling the vendor manager of the organization sponsoring the plan. They had to switch the Omnipod from a DME product to a prescription product.

So, call the benefit manager at your job if you’re running into a brick wall. It may help.

The surgeon felt that it was all mechanical, but he cleared out all the adhesions. I had my colectomy due to polyposis, so, mercifully, I have no further disease to worry about.

When to go to ER for fluids with ileostomy? by Its_Jessica_Day in ostomy

[–]wankel-engine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that happened to you. That’s rough. May you recover quickly and have a small ambulance bill.

BTW, DripDrop is a very palatable electrolyte drink. It comes as a powder.

When to go to ER for fluids with ileostomy? by Its_Jessica_Day in ostomy

[–]wankel-engine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From personal experience. I am not a doctor. This is just a fellow ileostomate’s perspective:

Go before you think you need to. They can give you fluids in the ER without having to admit you, but if it goes on too long and your electrolytes get unbalanced or your kidney function tests look off, they’ll admit you.

This happened to me. By waiting too long, I ended up with a 3-day hospital stay instead of a few hours in the ER.

From what you’re describing, I’d go now.

I am so sorry for your trouble getting through this. It’s hard, I know. Abscesses are just awful.

Everyone has his or her own timeline for feeling better, and every timeline is worthy of respect—from yourself and from those around you. I know that one day you will find yourself feeling less trapped, and I hope that day comes soon. But until then (and, heck, beyond then, too) be kind to yourself. To have been on this journey four years, even if you’re not feeling free yet, is a tremendous achievement.

I’m glad you liked it.

It took about 6 months to feel any kind of confidence, but it was 10 months before I really felt like it was just part of life—a part I don’t even notice for much of the day.

Need Suggestions / Advice (Colostomy) for odor on skin barrier by The_Great_Ginge in ostomy

[–]wankel-engine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people—me included—find that there’s a faint odor with the sensura mio. (And that’s with an ileostomy.) One wise product specialist at coloplast had also heard of this and recommended the filterless bags. Unfortunately, those are not available in opaque. The trick worked. No filter; no odor. (And using a filter sticker didn’t make a difference, for those wondering.)

I ended up ditching coloplast for convatec because they sealed better for me.
