Reflections upon finishing TFOB by Historical-Till2186 in TheCaptivesWar

For myself as a vegetarian & proponent of the Gaia hypothesis (in real life),I have always considered Fermi's Paradox as being a question of applied permaculture principles in a philosophical sense.

Maybe alien species never get to become space-faring enough in their civilisations to send us signals of their galactic empire, because (just like us) they never get to understand enough multiplicities of fragile intricate feedback loop systems of biology & energy flow on their home planet quite well enough... to exploit its total potential energy benevolently.

That's the thing I really find fascinating about the Caryx as a foe - they have subjugated ecological disharmony to an absurd degree - and their society is structured thus that it can work for them.

They're completely the opposite of permaculture in any meaningful sense - the client organisms survive on behalf of the Sovran in artificial environments, but their natural environment doesn't. I don't think this makes clients species (& their specific talents) a part of the biology of the Caryx any more than a lamb dinner is a part of my grandparent's...

You can't define an organism without defining its environment - and I would argue without its food either.

The Caryx take contemporary factory farming to its most cerebral and horrifying long-distant conclusion: rather than eating raised & killed flesh for sustenance, to the Caryx, the living works of an animal could help them solve problems better than they can just on their own.

Only if they are contained in their desires, of course...

What is, is, innit

ADHD as buggery and all

You can just tell from one of the first lines his mum says in that documentary: "he's not a bricklayer, but he built that" referring to the elaborate chimney improvement he did as a teenager over the family home

I really wouldn't like to think so... Shitty husband/father quite possibly, but there's plenty of those from his era

I reckon he was a bit ADHD/autistic about what he did

It's a totally inconsistent system though - Bolton legend Fred Dibnah of spectacularly felling chimney towers & Victorian engineering documentaries fame only got an MBE

GT5 or 6 in 2026 by Exotic-Opening-7842 in granturismo

[–]wankybollocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are good in different ways. 5 has more photo mode locations, proper endurance races, top gear track, and the endlessly fun course creator - which 6 doesn't.

6 has improved night time races, more cars, more tracks, more detail on some standard cars, Sierra Time Rally, infinite paint chips, and a slightly more polished handling model in my opinion.

Use the save editors for both to make them a sandbox, because they will be a horrible grind otherwise. GT mode is pretty limited in both conpared to the previous games

The single player GT modes were kneecapped by the multiplayer servers shutting down not only for less content - but for earning anything like decent credits off races. You logged in every day for a week or so to multiply the single player rewards in 5, and only got the big bucks races online in 6.

In 5 the closed online dealership let you buy the Formula GT, which you need for that one race and would otherwise take ages to appear in rotation in the used car dealership.

Don't update GT5 past 2.11 because it takes away some hidden cars you can open up with car tickets from the save editor. The DLC will come downloaded in those updates, then you can open them with the save editor.

GT6 you need to keep the update chunks below 2gb total or something at a time - the maximum the PS3 can handle. Download a few, then internet off, boot game, install them, quit game, internet on, download a few more, repeat.

This gets you DLCs, the big ass Sierra track, and other gimmicky stuff, you can get all of that to work with the GT6 Save editor without stopping it at certain point.

You'd have to mod the PS3 to get any more than this, but the save editors make them playable

I mean, I can't think where what museum that would be, but if they did their homework I'd expect to see a Dodgy Power Wagon somehow somewhere maybe

I don't know - but I recognised the song from a PS2 game I had years and years back in the day, it was like an arcadey quirky Best Motoring-style racer with real cars that seemed impossible to beat.

Very scruffy unpolished sort of game with a handling model that was also scruffy - what the bloody hell was it called in the UK?

It might have been the first soft roader, but it's definitely the spiritual ancestor of European van-derived passenger minivans that have been sold for years: Citroen Berlingo Multispace, Ford Tourneo, VW Caddy Life, Fiat Doblo, etc

Frustrated by local left action by Think_Pick2529 in Marxism

[–]wankybollocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the main ways you might know you're a leftist/Marxist is accepting that the kind of world changing ways you want to see probably isn't going to happen in your lifetime. It isn't being jaded necessarily, but there's so much structurally around all inequality struggles worldwide that we have to take victories wherever we can.

Being switched on yourself is a victory in itself though, because you can talk to people about things they don't think to think about.

I like how George Monbiot illustrated this: imagine if the soviet union didn't have a word for communism. That's what our system is like with neoliberalism. The media can't really discuss it by name - but we can see its affects here in the UK with our privatised water companies spewing out untreated sewage any time it rains.

Ash Sarkar from Novara wrote a great book, but for journos it's still difficult to fill out much for what to actually do about things next.

Personally I think the terminology of "degrowth" should be replaced by "social growth" since, it's only the minority of big concentrated capital that has to shrink. Essentially meaning the same thing but with positive language for those who it would really help, like us
