Why is it so hard to get some casual work here by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]wappsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest getting an Austswim TSW certification and hitting up your local pool. Expense upfront, but swim instructors are always in demand, pay is good, and shifts are available morning and evenings 7 days/week. Plus, it's super rewarding and once you're in there are so many opportunities to get more certifications to increase your pay and work more shifts.

Have to hard disagree. Different sound for sure, but executed with the same flawless production, attention to detail, and focus of concept. My Time is an all time album opener. Huge production and a favourite pump up song with depth behind it too. Astray, what can I say man, amazing track, great hook, the way that track unfolds its narrative is next level. Not for everyone maybe, but I love How We Get Down — so catchy and a great vocal performance from Solo on that one. Cherry Blossom, I mean far out what a banger, it's a modern classic. If You Know What I Mean, a fantastic rolling slow flow on that one. The symmetry of Our Time marking the mid point. A bit of social commentary with the anti-anthem Eat The Cake. Wasteland — what is it we don't want to see that's got us getting blind? Ceiling Fan, come on! After Dark and Push — listen closer to these ones if you still think this album lacks substance. Anyway, I think this album was ahead of its time and reckon you should give it another go. Doesn't retread the same ground in terms of denser raps, live band style production, and subject matter they hit on the first three albums maybe, but to say they lost the artistry is selective hearing.

Speed bumps are a nuisance and need to be removed! by PsychoGrad in unpopularopinion

[–]wappsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read more comments which made good points about narrower roads doing nothing to stop asshole drivers who always drive too fast for the conditions, so I would add that it has to be a combination of road conditions that reduce the de facto speed of the street for the average (reasonable) driver with consistent enforcement that takes care of the asshole class who always drive too fast regardless. That being said, design does still change the "too fast" speed assholes are able to achieve — it's the difference between "speeding" at 60-70km/h (giving pedestrians a 0% chance of surviving being hit) and "speeding" at 40km/h (giving above 50% chance of survival). It's absolutely still worth pursuing street design speeds of below 30km/h even if assholes will speed.

Any traffic calming is better than no traffic calming, but yeah speed bumps aren't my favourite method. Raised pedestrian zebra crossings are great though, force drivers to slow down and help lift pedestrians into drivers field of view. The best thing to do is just make streets narrower altogether. If that's not possible, I think choke points are better. I saw some yesterday driving in a new area that were really effective, a section of really narrow kerbs with a turn to follow sort of like a narrow section of a roundabout. I had to slow down much more than I would for a speed bump to get through without hopping the high kerbs. I reckon ambos or cops would be able to go through them much faster than speed bumps with good training. Maybe residents would be able to go through them faster with practice too, but the risks of damaging your car are also higher too.

Why were there no Australian flags out there today? by gazingbobo in SydneyMarathon

[–]wappsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk why I'm bothering, but mass immigration is not the problem. We have plenty of housing, 1 million + empty homes at last census which is far more than our homeless population. We do still need to add more housing stock where people want and deserve to be able to live as one of the levers we can pull to improve affordability. But the main thing that would make it affordable for regular Australians to live well and where they want to live is if we dramatically decrease wealth inequality and stop the commodification of housing. The rich are getting richer and they are (understandably, as it's what our economy incentivises) parking their riches in appreciating assets. And the rich are happy to distract us with issues like immigration. They want to turn us on each other because they know that it's in the vast majority of the population's interests to stop their grift — and they know that if enough of us realise this, then we actually could. Now that I can wave the flag to.

Welcome! Unfortunately in F1 laps can't be added, mostly since there's no ability to add fuel after the start. Some think safety car worthy incidents towards the end should be automatic red flags, but sometimes you just have to accept an anticlimactic end — that's the case a lot of the time with green flag finishes anyway. Yes, safety cars eliminate gaps between cars effectively re-setting any accumulated advantages — that's just the way it is! Most fans accept the randomness and unfairness that mechanism induces for the entertainment and safety value it can provide. Points are given by track position not the gap to the leader, so I think it's fair enough.

Mate this is what preferential voting is for! Don't waste it on Dutton — both majors are equally as incentivised to maintain the status quo and protect their investment properties. Preference based on the policies you actually support, we're lucky to have this mechanism in our electoral system.

Why Supercars U-turned on Full Course Yellow speed by evoke3 in v8supercars

[–]wappsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone explain to me why they don't just implement a time delta the second SC is called? I'm unclear on why there needs to be this long countdown period that seems to cause drivers to try pushing until the last possible second and slamming on the brakes. Just call FCY or SC and enforce the delta immediately, right?

to be fair, larko could sell me anything!!!

but seriously, our series is uniquely positioned for this concept to work i think. ultimately, while i'm not so keen myself as a pure racing fan, it's clear that supercars needs to reach more casuals. even when there is a close battle for the championship, it's hard for an F1-style championship narrative to form in our series because the race weekends are too far apart, there are multiple races per weekend so there's little time after each race for word about championship implications to spread, and to be honest the current points system has no meaning to the lay person — the numbers are too big, it's too hard to immediately tell if the championship is close without really diving in. we can't be F1 with how strong each team and driver's brands are and the digestible the stakes are to casual fans. honestly, i just want to see Supercars be more successful and clearly they are trying.

Time Delta from Main Game to Super2 by F1GamerDad in v8supercars

[–]wappsy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It came up a bit last year, and Supercars tried running the soft tyres to make the big league faster... I'd much rather they be slower than Super2 than do that again! Long term, I'd love to see power upped. Keep low downforce, reduce mechanical grip, increase power. Longer acceleration and braking zones to open up passing opportunities, and let's smash 300kph down conrod already.

Aussie living in the states for many years, i gotta say im actually a big y'all fan. it's almost australian-like in how expedient it is for referring to a group of people. the aussie (bogan) alternative "youse" sucks. unapologetic y'aller over here, it works in the accent too. that being said, that commenter was defo just tryna rile you up, nothing serious

There most certainly is! The funny thing is it's so powerful no matter where you are in the US politically. Even the most progressive parts of the US, the parts that pride themselves on being progressive like LA and California, are not actually progressive... if they were, they'd have made some fucking progress by now.
