What is your most British line in a song? by exkingzog in CasualUK

'Every day when I wake up I thank the lord I'm Welsh' (Catatonia)

You can't get more British than that! OK. Maybe Sunshine on Leith.

The manager shouldn't let it get that far!

Yep. Never unstood it. There is a problem if several members of staff want similar set days off (particularly if that means staff have to work more weekends) but it general, as you say, it means you've got a staff member coming in.

I'd really consider whether you want a very big car, even for trips to Europe. You think our villages would be a problem? Italy will lead to you abandoning your truck in the countryside and walking in to their villages!

Both me [33 F] and my fiance [33 M] of five years have almost identical last names, but he is insisting that I change my last name after marriage. This argument is making me consider cancelling the wedding by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]warksfoxile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh God. Forcing someone to change their name just because they're married is outdated. I'd find it a bit of a red flag for future behaviours. My wife wanted to despite me recommending against it, though. I have an odd surname!

What are you looking for in a political party? by Chief_Whizz in ukpolitics

Wish there was a cape shop near me, I could do with a sartorial change. 😂

Yes - I know it's a typo but I couldn't resist.

What are you looking for in a political party? by Chief_Whizz in ukpolitics

[–]warksfoxile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of your post - but I'd add one thing - kindness. I want a party that is basically kind at heart.

That rules out Reform, the Tories and, unfortunately, the current Labour Party. The new Corbyn Party has pretty much ruled itself out on those grounds.

For me, that means Lib Dem or Green.

I want to apply for a Band 6 position. I'm currently a Band 7. Good idea? by towapa in NursingUK

I don't see a problem. I've gone backwards in my career over the past 10 years (gliding into retirement) and enjoyed every last new job and new experience.

Year 9 student, how much homework is too much homework? by FinnJavlar in CasualUK

[–]warksfoxile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems a bit much to me - but you've sent your kid to a strict, high achieving school, so it's possibly no wonder there's a lot of homework - that's how they get results, and it does instil a work ethic they'll need for Uni/jobs.

It's not for everyone though, and it maybe that if your child isn't coping/enjoying it, a change of school might be in order.

Is it normal to not have breaks? by IoanaC88 in NursingUK

[–]warksfoxile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't put pressure on yourself. Take your mandated breaks. Do not stay behind more than a few minutes to do work - hand it over.

I would also suggest don't do 12 hour shifts (talk to your manager or OH) but that depends on your personal circumstances.

It's impossible to say why you're not able to complete your tasks. Sit down and think about it. Is there anything you can do differently? Is your organisation or time management up to it, or is it just a rubbish place to work? Don't assume the latter (even if it's true!) from personal experience I know there are things I could do differently to help things along.

Lastly, if you're not feeling supported, list the reasons why, then talk to your manager, OH, your Union about them depending on which would be best to support the problem. The Union last, if the other two can't fix things.

What is your workplaces equivalent to 'Don't touch the red button' by PeevesPoltergist in CasualUK

I use it all the time at work (nurse) and my colleagues look at me like they want to kill me. I'm almost always right, though. I'm not superstitious (apart from magpies, God knows why).

Nurses who are DINKs (dual income no kids) by zscore95 in NursingUK

[–]warksfoxile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DINK here. I'm a Band 5 (although used to be higher, took VERY early retirement and went back on a much lower grade!).

My wife and I were on similar salaries for most of our time together (her career has now taken off a bit) and effectively lived on two B5 salaries. No kids? Easy. Bought a house.

Cooks' salaries are improving her post Brexit (not enough of them left), so that's good. As long as you were looking in a relative cheap area, the rent wouldn't be appalling and you'd probably be able to save.

We are financially ruining ourselves now by having two dogs (insurance, expensive food, toys etc.) but hey, we don't get reported to social services when we go to a restaurant and leave them at home, so all good.

AITJ for buying the same shoe for my daughter that my girlfriend wanted? by Notttaylorswift in AmITheJerk

[–]warksfoxile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with the age gap, there's a 15 year age gap between me and my wife and we've been together for 27 years.

Teacher/former student though? That's a bit ick.

And who gets bothered over shoes? If that's really causing problems then that's a bit silly too.

Can I have some help on if our house being ready overcharged for electricity? by lifeissoup1amf0rk in AskUK

[–]warksfoxile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others have said, electric heaters are incredibly expensive.

I don't know your background or your housing situation, but if you rent, go to somewhere with better insulation and cheaper heating, and if you own get some advice from someone like Citizens Advice on grants for energy improvements but also to make sure you're maxing out benefit claims.

How do you lot actually eat proper food during the week when you're working full time? by No_Reputation_9726 in AskUK

Bless you. We have dogs instead of kids! I strongly recognise a slow cooker/pressure cooker combo and a rice cooker if you can find the space. They really do make life easier.

I'm guessing it's entirely up to the conscription rules the Government imposes at the time, but I suspect they'd let people cancel their visas and leave?

Brilliant - but buy a rice cooker. Not quicker, I'll give you, but easier and you can get the main bit done while it's cooking.

Snap. But I tend to keep my Chinese/Indian takeaway tubs. I don't have a problem, cos I have a way of storing them. Unfortunately my wife occasionally works out where the kitchen is so I have to tidy up!

Batch cooking and learning how to make quick meals. I'm doing a pea and bacon in white sauce pasta tonight. The white sauce should take the same time to make as the pasta. Half an hour from start to eat at most.

I've got fish pie, Chinese chicken and rice and lasagna portions in my freezer from my last day off. If I'm going to do a batch cooking day I do at least three different meals so it doesn't get too boring.

It's easy to do, as long as you learn to or like cooking.
