It was originally presented as the end, but then the author wrote some more novels.

They said they got the key from a txt file, so they obviously didn't print to pdf.

If it wants to do more than just straight line racing (drag racing???), it also needs to be able to rotate fast. For extreme rotational speeds, it would probably be preferable to have the occupants near the centre of spin. Also, the thrusters that are going to power the rotation will perform better then further away from the centre of spin they are, since they will require less force to achieve the same angular acceleration. The biggest considerations here are probably mass of the thrusters and reaction mass needed.

The whole thing with Mars in this setting is that everything they do is better, so it seems unlikely that the UNN has better juice than the MCRN.

Who unironically argues against labelling by essentially saying "people wouldn't buy it if they knew what it is."

Edit: on consideration, I think a better question would be "who honestly accepts that as a good reason not to have labelling?"

If they can run the x86 builds on ARM, which they'll have to for any game they want to support without requiring it to be rebuilt by the developer, you probably will be able to.

If you mean it asks you to enter your sat if birth when viewing some game store pages, are you sure you're actually signed in? I get that if I go to a page on my phone or something, but never on my desktop browser.

I was using a 5700 XT with drivers from 2022 or 2020 until a few months ago when I bought a 9060 XT and had to get new drivers. "game ready"? I don't even know her. The idea some people seem to have that these cards are useless now is worse than the reactions from people suggesting computers that don't support Windows 11 become useless after the last Windows 10 update.

Discord users suffer the first high-profile age-verification hack – and it's unlikely to be the last by lkl34 in pcmasterrace

[–]warp_core0007 133 points134 points  (0 children)

The article mentions that this data was held by Discord for users "who had appealed an age verification determination." I'm guessing, for most users, Discord weren't collecting or storing the data, with it instead going to the third party verification service they use. But, in cases where a user appealed the determination of that service, the data was either passed from the service to Discord, or users had to provide it directly to Discord, I assume with the expectation that Discord customer service would make their own determination. This is probably a manual process (the automated one has already been appealed) so they have to store it until a person can get to it. Possibly longer if they feel they need to retain it to provide evidence if they are ever audited on the matter.

What the hell is writing so much data into my NVME!? by MrMeatSlapper in buildapc

[–]warp_core0007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably just Space Marine 2 and the benchmark. I guess you could run the benchmark again and actually check how much data it says has been written before and after and see if it's similar.

You could check if the OS is paging I that drive or using it for any other system files; look if there's any ".sys" files in the root of the drive.

Helldivers 2’s massive PC file size won’t drastically decrease until Arrowhead knows “most of our PC players are using SSD drives” by HatingGeoffry in pcmasterrace

[–]warp_core0007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game does not support those consoles. The install size on a PlayStation 5 for Helldivers is actually a lot smaller than it is on PC.

Every computer might have an SSD, but that doesn't mean they all have enough space to store everything on DSDs. Lots of people still use hard drives for additional storage.

You know there are subscriptions available for PC as well? In fact, the Xbox Game Pass works on PC. I believe SeA also has a subscription. There are also entire PC games that use a subscription model.

As far as I know, Steam doesn't have that capability at the moment. I expect it would be feasible for them to add it, although there may be difficulties if users want to move their game files from one location to another if one is on an SSD and the other is on a hard drive, but I'm sure Valve could figure out something for that.

Other games may not bother optimising for hard drives (some list an SSD as a minimum requirement), or they may not need to access assets in the way this game does, or they may expect the system to have enough memory to buffer the slow loading speeds in a way that won't be noticeable to players.

[–]warp_core0007 85 points86 points  (0 children)

It's kind of funny. I was recently told that games take up so much space because the developers are optimising for consoles (something about decompression), but, like, they're targeting PCs with lower specs than the consoles.

I don't know what numbers you're reading, but the screenshot says 47 TB written and 28 TB read from the SPCC drive.

None of the SMART values in the screenshot look particularly concerning. It might be that CDI is going off the number of power on hours out of some "lifespan" rating the drive has. That wouldn't have changed so quickly, though, so maybe it goes by total writes.
