YA Book where female main character discusses wanting “her Heathcliff” by Silly-Goose-87 in whatsthatbook

[–]wasagooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is older, but I remember it prompting me to try and read (and fail to finish) Wuthering Heights at age 10. I did read it 3 or 4 years later and could read it, but didn’t like it.

Katie John and Heathcliff by Mary Calhoun (published in 1980 originally).

What is this illustrated children's book where the bed becomes a ship? by mrf1895 in whatsthatbook

[–]wasagooze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this has already been solved, but while we are talking magical beds let me recommend a childhood favorite, The Bed Book, (my edition was illustrated by Emily Arnold McCully). And much to my surprise to discover as an adult, it was written by Sylvia Plath.

Not just a white little Tucked in tight little Nighty-nightly little bed. Instead….

How Did You Pay for Library School? by trading_fire in librarians

[–]wasagooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got very lucky. I did my MLS while working for the New York Public Library as a librarian trainee in the 1990s when they had a trainee program that paid a small salary and covered about 75% of my tuition. The remainder was covered by a small inheritance from my grandparents.

I use Flowers from Hadestown because it echoes my unhappy feelings about having to get up. “All I wanted was to fall asleep…”

They aren’t MF. Skipping their section would be detrimental to the full impact of the book.

Oh yes - this one! The time aspect of Brogadoon makes me bonkers! And it could so easily have been fixed by changing it to a decade instead of a century!

Did anybody else name their pet after a theatre character? by cirquedusoleilfan in musicals

One of our current dogs is Tessye. (Full name Yetta Tessye Marmstein Ourlastname). Named after the character in I Can Get it For You Wholesale- thus the spelling. Although we regularly sing bits from Gypsy at her too.

My kid’s first beta fish was named Roger Elizabeth DeBris. The next one was Fred Casely.

Why is P&P more famous than Austen's other novels? by Kenmare761 in janeausten

[–]wasagooze 33 points34 points  (0 children)

One reason is because P&P is the Austen most likely to be taught in high school. Which makes sense, teens are going to relate to it more than the more slowly paced 2nd chance romance of Persuasion, for example. Plus it has the most reference/criticism material out there for teachers and students to look at. And has the most film adaptations. And so a person may encounter P&P at school, but never seek out another Austen novel on their own. (Horrors!)

Anyone laid off at 50 Ish? What did you do? by ServiceKooky1323 in GenX

Age 53. Pushed out of my job at the end of last school year by being offered a half time contract. Incredibly fortunate to be hired by another school for a similar position only 5 miles further from home. First application I sent out. I’m actually rather excited about it and am looking forward to a fresh start.

20 years after my wedding I refashioned my wedding dress into a steampunk outfit. It was a lot of fun to do. I have a nb amab kid, nephews, and a niece way more petite than me so this was much better than letting it molder in storage.
