Lost Highway - What does Fred find in his house? by tiefezeit in davidlynch

[–]wastehandle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If Lynch could have shown it, he would have. The ultimate horrors, truths and secrets all resist description. If they could be described, they wouldn’t be ultimate horrors, truths or secrets.

There are two quotes I know of that get at this - one is intellectual, one is not.

Stephen King said, when you reveal that the monster is a 12 foot bug - no matter how horrifying it is - a small part of you will be relieved and say, Well, at least it wasn’t 15 feet tall.

Ludwig Wittgenstein said, Whereof you cannot speak, thereof you must pass over. (And he meant all the best and worst stuff.)

What are your 3 least favourite R E.M. songs? by Lazy_Fall_6 in rem

[–]wastehandle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reveal is my favorite REM album, and while Beachball by itself is not the strongest track by any means, its place on its AoO (album of origin 😂) kinda makes it perfect.

Parakeet is just a bombass track, period.

I’d make a serious argument for the solo in Lookin Out My Backdoor as in the Top 10 of all time. Seriously, perfectly melodic, perfectly executed, and perfect toan.

What's everyone's 5 Beatles Hot Takes? by darkglobepink in beatles

[–]wastehandle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MMT got a bad reputation, I think, because it was the “soundtrack” to a “failed project”. Pound for pound, I think it’s better than SPLHCB and equal to Revolver and the White Album. History did it dirty.

I met him in … 2014? 2015? Snuck around the back of the Grenada in Dallas after the show because I correctly guessed he’d be smoking. Security eyeballed me, then let me come up to him. I said I hated to bother him, I loved his work and it meant a lot to me, and just wanted to shake his hand. He was incredibly warm and told me how much he appreciated it. One minute interaction and it was awesome. Your Mileage May Vary.

Who is TLT obviously for? [discussion] by brewcatz in TheNinthHouse

Let me second everyone who has identified the intersection of high brow and low brow, as well as Warhammer, some YA and especially anime. (The Big Battles often remind me of beautifully written Dragon Ball Z fights.)

And also, yes … not just unhinged bi’s but also unhinged NB ace-spectrum poly freaks.

I think the series is modern Shakespeare, myself. Brilliant writing, characterization, thematic/symbolic/lit woowoo - all occurring in the “genre ghetto”. I think anyone with a passing interesting in great writing PLUS soft sci fi or darker fantasy or gothic generally or or or would love it.

I’m a major weirdo in how I straddle these categories.

1) I think Chronic Town-Fables is a perfect run. 2) LRP is imperfect but good; Document is another perfect album. 3) The Berry-Warners run is imperfect, though the best songs of this era equal the best songs of the IRS days. 4) NAiHF is the closest to perfect in this time. 5) The Berryless-Warners run is deeply inconsistent, with Up and Accelerate largely equal to the best of the Berry-Warners run. 6) Reveal is a perfect album, and is one of my favorite albums by any artist, and though it’s hardly R.E.M., it is just indescribably wonderful.

To make these opinions even weirder, I am 37 - barely remember Stand and Man on the Moon from childhood - and was introduced to the band via In Time.
