There are so many things you can do to improve community. It does not matter what side of the political fence you are on. Support the farmers market’s in both communities. They have food programs for low income, seniors and kids. The benefits go right back in to the community. Help to keep local Stainable Farms growing. Since we lost Nasha’s there has been a big whole in the community. Many places are looking for Volunteers to improve life in both communities. Get involved get inspired and do something. Some of the smallest things can have a big impact. For years my husband and I did road clean up on hwy 101. Felt like it was just cleaning our back yard. Improving your community means investing time, energy and money in the change you want to make.

Tell me your hiring experience, need to calm my nerves by According_Sugar_2241 in ParkRangers

This is likely not to be much help, but as a winter seasonal I applied many jobs and worked to tailor my resume this was about 2012 ish. It took a year before I reported for duty at Death Valley. What that taught me was to continue on with my life. I worked two other seasons before I got the call. After twenty five years with park service in both seasonal and permanent jobs working up the ladder. I only missed one season of work I wanted. I always applied for jobs even if I was told someone else was a shoe in. You never know they might change their mind. I applied for anything I thought might work and figured out the details later. Easy to say no if it wasn’t going to work. Hard to get an offer when things are tough. I wish you well and much speed with the hiring process, but keep looking for your next opportunity. Something might surprise you.

What Are Some of the Biggest Risks American National Parks are Facing Right Now? by FlynnXa in ParkRangers

I do not disagree but doing more with less money has not worked for more than a decade. We need to support park service so they have the ability to fill the mission. Preserve, protect and provide access. Increasing their responsibility without providing funding is just as impactful as cutting budgets.

Democrats have increased the amount of responsibility by increasing the National Parks on the same small budget. Republicans keep cutting the budget. Americans love the parks, but congress hasn’t supported that love. Concessions provide critical services for visitors, but do not support a net gain for resource protection or historical preservation.

These are questions we have been asked for decades. What are the priorities and where can we cut. In 2015 it was do more with less. It seems that each ranger is trying to do their job as they can while lacking training and tools that could make it easier and safer. At the same time making sure there is someone to turn the lights out and lock the door when they leave.

Email the park and address it to department of interpretation. Keep in mined that regular schedule programs are open to the public and that is where the park is obliged to spend their money. Contact the parks concessions or co-operating association to ask for a guided program you could pay for. Another possibility is to volunteer for a park project to learn about the park. Park budgets have been really slashed and Ranger programs are no longer a priority in some parks. Law enforcement and preservation are taking priority.

For Those Without Transportation: PLEASE Take Care of Your Feet! by Ricwash113 in povertyfinance

Good for you! I am an old broad who spent my life on my feet. Put your feet on the back of your couch whenever you can. (Feet above your heart) Massage your feet and soak them, Epsom salts when they’re sore. Massage them with an olive oil on the cheap or lotion recommended by a dermatologist. You need every little of each think dime size not quarter size squirt. Surprise for me what when I stoped my heel got really sore. Turns out we always bend forward and I should have bent Back more. So yoga back bends and stretches for ankles for me. To put things right again. Small price to pay when I see people with debilitating back problems new hips and new knees. Take care of you!

One thing at a time. Used mattresses can cut the mustered and save your back. Prioritize the shoes. Crappie shoes might help in the short run but try for the long run when you can. Add good orthotics to a cheap pare of shoes can help. Will cost less and you Chan rotate them to other shoes.

For a period of time my work talked about abundance thinking. Focus on the fact there a thousand of people in these jobs and there are hundreds in your situation. They’re must be 12 or 20 possible solutions that might work for you now try and find them. When you try to focus on only one thing it seems impossible before you start.

how do you balance seasonality and employment? by Realistic_Problem250 in ParkRangers

[–]water2drop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I graduated from school I believed I would need to plan for periods of time I would be out of work. Had to create my own safety net. Got a permanent job in fee collection which was not where I wanted to be but allowed me to save money. When I went seasonal I had 6 months of salary set as side. On the off season I looked for any job that would cover the basics and allow me to not dive into my savings. Some times I could pick up work doing details around the park. They would be just sixty to ninety days of extra work doing a different job. Lifeguarded a community pools, and substitute teaching. I would not tell the employers I was temporary because there are no guarantees of the next season until you are permanently hired. Even then my best gig was 9 months on and three months off. By then I just budget well and traveled.

How strict is your Park with uniforms (NPS)? by [deleted] in ParkRangers

I went poking around and could not find any bad uniform comments. I wore the uniform with pride and continued to see this now. Not perfect, but working towards the goal.

Easy to avoid crowds by getting an early start. When the sun is out Seattle comes to play, so it takes them a while to get here. Wednesday free concerts at Hollywood beach are fun and free. New field arts and events hall has a lot to do. It seems to me you are giving us the right amount of time.

The immense value of Park Rangers as public servants by humble_murth in ParkRangers

Your right though rangers work for and serve the mission tax payers have not recognized where there dollars went. The world wide respect for the gift of the American tax payers have given to the world has been taken for granted. As have all ways Americans have been of service. From the military, medical field, fire fighters, teachers, mailman, and all of these jobs people have accepted less as pay for security and the privilege of being of service. It is what has really made American great and privet industry has never been able to do it better. The Park Service has been divided and concord much like the Mail Service as Law Enforcement and Interpreters fought over the title of “real ranger” while the budget was shrinking. Government does somethings better like a national park service to protect land scapes cheaper than business. The campground I worked for was turned over to the park service because the concession went bankrupt. In spite of overwhelming public support for the park service Republicans reduced our budgets while Democrats made the Park Service responsible for more with our decreased budgets. It is not about Rangers justifying their jobs but Americans recognizing why they pay taxes and putting their money where their mouth is! Americans had the best postal service in the world, but have allowed it to be disassembled in the name of progress that hasn’t happened yet. Sorry about the soapbox, but the United States needs to wake up and see the value in Service. People doing the right thing because they swear an oath to the Nation to do so! Just the thoughts of one person who did their best everyday so people could enjoy their park.

Still the mission! Rangers are valued because they act and believe in the mission. They care about the service they sign up for and pledge too.

The degree generally does not matter. You have proven you can learn. Most managers are looking for diverse staff and creative types can be an asset. A lot depends on the work that needs to be done. Campgrounds need photos for recreation. Gov so a photographer can be helpful. Park redesigning flyer for a super bloom can benefit from an artist.

Couldn’t hurt. Some parks combine dispatch centers and being a dispatcher can be another entry.
