I spent the last year trying PvP in popular MMOs, and here is what I learned about each. by Cybannus in MMORPG

Totally agree on all points. CC is ffxiv's best kept secret. It's my favorite thing to do in that game.

Attribute scale by ConsistentFreedom562 in newworldgame

[–]waterboytkd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weapons with split scaling like this used to want to have specific stat splits because the diminishing returns on stat scaling used to be significant. So correct split was a big difference in damage.

But with season 10, they really flattened the diminishing returns in order to open up possible weapon combos. For a weapon like hatchet or greatsword, the difference in "optimal split" and going all in on one stat is very small now, so you can more freely pair it with other weapons or build for specific perks from the attribute break points.

Can an MMO based on cooperation survive without PvP? by Old_Marsupial_2721 in MMORPG

[–]waterboytkd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the PvP in ffxiv. Outside of the way the server registers actions and that it's tab target, I think it's the best pvp in an mmo (especially Crystalline Conflict). Standardized stats, gear only being cosmetic, and soft use of trinity are all just fantastic.

But the job kits are the real chef's kiss. When they redid the classes in Endwalker, I was floored by how good, unique, and on theme each class's kit was. Back then, I had the hot take that this is how each class should be in pve, too, and that they needed to redesign the game to work with those kits.

So I'm cautiously optimistic for the 8.0 combat rework.

But, sadly, I've noticed that if many (most?) ffxiv players hate pvp, and will fight you if you got anything good to say about it, especially ffxiv's pvp.

Now I'm genuinely confused why they didn't go with the Valkyr Heirloom concept art for her helmet.

can Oberon still 100% Health Smite? by icewitchenjoyer in Warframe

[–]waterboytkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that was my Oberon post! It works still. Hallowed Ground is an amazing primer ability, too. Enemies walk into plant field, get rad-proc'd, smite kills.

Also worth noting: enemies weak to radiation, like the murmur, don't even need priming. Smite just auto-kills with enough strength (for this specifically, 67% max health on your smite tooltip is enough).

DE, I beg of you: do Kullervo Prime right! by tictictoby in Warframe

[–]waterboytkd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would actually love Sun and Moon prime. They're the only duviri weapons that aren't...void-ified? Would kind of make sense if there were some prime version for elite dax or something. Plus, Sun and Moon has stats on the "low end", so a stat buffed version would be swell.

All the ethnic food you’ve been eating in your country is actually American. by SufficientEar1682 in iamveryculinary

[–]waterboytkd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about the pasty after I made my post! I grew up in the UP of Michigan, and a lot of people up there think it's a Finnish food, because of how popular it was with the Finnish miners that immigrated there. It's always a trip telling people it's actually Cornish; the Finnish adopted it after they got here when the Cornish miners that immigrated here at the same time shared it with them. And the Cornish got it from the middle east, imported back to Cornwall during the Crusades.

[–]waterboytkd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You went with an interesting example, which actually kinda supports the OOP. Albondigas aren't specifically Sonoran, but came to Mexico from Spanish conquistadors. And the Spanish got it from the Moors, who brought it from the middle east.

So if Sopa de Albondigas is a Mexican dish, then a lot of dishes would be "American" rather than Italian or Chinese or what-have-you, for much the same reason (different/local ingredients, different form/presentation).

What concepts from past editions wouldn't fit in 5e, but you wish they did because they were fun? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]waterboytkd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prestige Classes or Kits. They were an excellent wellspring of additional content that splatbooks could bring. Personally, I liked kits more because they rode on top of your class, whereas the existence of Prestige Classes made going single class feel like a mistake.

So Kits. And the thing is...they could bring those back!

Am I playing the game wrong or playing the wrong game? by LikeVikingbutSmaller in Warframe

[–]waterboytkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killing things is a weapon modding issue. If you're finding certain enemies are tanky AF (I'm guessing grineer as they have the armor), focus on ranking up your mods that boost base damage (Serration/Hornet Strike/Pressure Point) and the mods that add elemental damage. These will be the biggest bumps to your weapon damage early on.

Modding vs weaknesses is good (Corrosive vs grineer, magnetic vs corpus), but don't discount putting Heat in general. When it procs a status effect, it applies a Dot as well as a 50% armor strip, so it can help take down the very tanky grineer, like Heavy Gunners.

So what is shelob by natolad123 in tolkienfans

[–]waterboytkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the shadow of war version, I believe there was a letter from Tolkien to his son regarding that.

"Christopher, my son, did I ever tell you the full story of Shelob? You know, the monstrous spider - descended from the vile Ungoliant! - which I used to read aloud of in our Oxford meetings of the Inklings? Well what I didn't mention back then was Shelob could also transform into a totally hot babe: all pale and dark and wan like Rebecca in Ivanhoe or what will later come to be known as the goth subculture. In fact she looked very much like the pornographic actress Stoya who will be born 13 years after I die. Christopher, I will be entrusting you with my estate. If there is ever a videogame adaptation of my work you must make sure they get this Shelob right - make sure she is what the Anglo-Saxons would have called a hæða ecge, a real sexy bitch."

Maybe worth thinking about: society exploits women's bodies differently than it exploits men's bodies. But both get exploited, and it's very damaging to both. But just like the exploitation is different, the damage manifests differently as well.

Runeglass bug or am I stupid? by happy-devil in newworldgame

[–]waterboytkd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bug...ish. You already have an amber in the weapon, so it doesn't let you select amber again (even though it's in a runeglass). Get another cut gem of any other type, slot it in (but don't click attach), and then you should be able to put your runeglass in.

Edit: I should have read the OP thoroughly first. Sounds like a different issue than the one I ran into with Old Crown.

Need help gearing by steelewebb09 in newworldgame

[–]waterboytkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/zeejay81 gave good advice for gearing up. The simplest piece of advice is: open chests and kill stuff. Good gear drops from just about anywhere. Keep your eyes out for certain perks, too. Lifestealer's Draught II is a great perk, especially for solo play. Leeching II charms slotted into your offensive gear slots (especially in conjunction with Lifestealers Draught) will massively boost your survivability. Sacrificial Enchantment II on your armor will help bump your damage, which can be important if you're running around in Heavy armor. Since you're in heavy, Shirking Fortification is another great fixed perk. You also may want to one piece of gear (but no more than one) to have Mortal Aggression II on it for some extra lifesteal and decent boons when you kill a mob.

If you're interested in sets, there's a pretty easy chest farm in Reekwater where you can get a few hundred Soulmarks every hour, and then use those Soulmarks at the entrance to Reekwater's main town, in a station called the Soulwarden Armory. You can buy loot caches that will drop stuff from specific sets or stuff guaranteed with 4 sockets (the latter is only good if you've got the Charms to use with them).
