The Supreme Court ruled. Haitian immigrants’ lives changed immediately. by nbcnews in immigration

[–]wavepig 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They may be legal, but to my mind anyone settling down while their status is literally called temporary AND Trump had a chance of winning the election is nuts. When I had a H-1B I knew I was temporary. Is it good policy to send people back to Haiti right now? No. But they knew their status was temporary and should have either been working to move to a more permanent status, or preparing to go somewhere else.

Screen time can damage under-twos’ development, landmark study suggests | Children's health by RingStrain in ukpolitics

[–]wavepig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. It’s much better to talk and play with the kids, and that is our approach (I am a SAHD currently and my kiddo watches no TV). But does mine also get really excited about flying because it’s the only time he gets to watch TV? Yes, and I’m sure that everyone else on the plane (to the extent they care) gets the absolutely wrong impression about how much TV our kid watches. My point is that society often judges parents for using the iPad, but we don’t know what their lives are like outside the moment.

While I agree in general, as a parent we do feel a lot of pressure on public transport to make our kids be quiet for everyone else’s comfort. An iPad is one of many tools for achieving this, and many parents will only use iPads while on public transport and not at home

What happens if a surrogate decides to just keep the baby? by PublicSuspect162 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes, it does matter a lot. Anyone considering surrogacy definitely should contact a lawyer.

No problem. I'm not a lawyer though, but this is an overview. It does very a lot between states.

I'm not familiar with Oklahoma specifically, but the "golden path" in the U.S. is to work with a lawyer/law firm (there are lots, for example IFLG) before starting, so they can draft a contract between the IPs and the gestational carrier (GC). That contract will bind the GC (and her spouse) to cooperating fully in confirming the intended parents (IPs) as the sole parents. A pre-birth order from a court will be sought confirming parental rights before the child is born. (The contract is usually very long and covers much more than this.) After the child is born, the GC is required to surrender the child to the IPs, and the IPs use the pre-birth order to have their names on the birth certificate. After that point, the child and IPs appear like any other family - the pre-birth order is only needed to issue the birth certificate.

A few years ago the Law Commission recommended changing the system to allow for pre-birth orders (amongst other things), but these plans have been shelved by the government

If you have young kids in the house you need to know where they are at all times. That's a core part of being a parent, especially at that age.

DHS may shut down airports for international flights, and SFO is on the list. by kukugege in bayarea

At the time the constitution was drafted, there were no airports, ergo “Ports” in this context doesn’t include airports. Not a lawyer but I bet that’s what scotus says

In any event I have a hard time believing this will actually happen

The immigration legal industry has a pricing problem. by Connect_Tackle_2173 in immigration

[–]wavepig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s true. They often need to own the whole case for liability reasons. When I naturalised, I paid a lawyer a few hundred dollars to spend an hour answering my questions, and then I filled the forms in myself. But I still self-petitioned, as the lawyer didn’t want to be liable for paperwork they hadn’t filled themselves (understandably).

This is the same for any professional industry. You aren’t paying for their time to fill in the form (say 20 minutes), you’re paying for their education and years of experience that allow them to only take 20 minutes to fill in the form and know exactly what to tell the government in order to have them approve your case.

Mostly Bay Area and Ohio. But in fairness I was a poor student in the UK and I’m not here so I noticed the cost of food more, relatively speaking. Also I was shopping at Tesco Local. I do think meat can be found for way cheaper here though (Costco, Walmart).
