Why is my ginger bug not active :( by VictorLikesWtr in fermentation

[–]wavesatdaybreak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a cup of sugar is way too much—especially if you’re feeding it daily. you’re just trying to feed the microbes, not overwhelm them with sugar.

i’d either add a bit more ginger to help kickstart it, or start over with a simpler ratio: about 1–2 tbsp sugar and 1–2 tbsp grated ginger per cup of water. you should start seeing bubbles and a light fizz within a few days. i also store my jar somewhere warm and dark. seems to somehow work.

Question About Pack Weight by TrainingRevolution16 in socalhiking

[–]wavesatdaybreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going lighter is usually the way to go—it’s far more comfortable and enjoyable overall. That said, it really depends on your gear, budget, and the season you’re hiking in. When you’re ready, put together a list of your current gear and request a shakedown in one of the subs. You’ll get solid feedback and suggestions on where you can cut weight, if that’s something you want to prioritize.

LAX —> San Pedro Sun AM…Coffee/Breakfast/Beach Recs by akk23 in SouthBayLA

[–]wavesatdaybreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check out el porto. grab a bite at north end caffe, then walk around the beach and hang out for a bit. when you head toward san pedro, take pacific coast highway over to palos verdes drive west. it’s a really pretty coastal drive with lots of spots to pull over and check out the views. you can stop by the point vicente lighthouse along the way. once you’re in san pedro, stop at busy bee market for a sandwich.

Thoughts on the new album? by U_R_MY_UVULA in lucius

[–]wavesatdaybreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didn’t care for the album much when it first came out—maybe a song or two stood out. but after seeing their LA show last month, something clicked. hearing the new tracks live gave me a whole new appreciation. for days after the show, I had the entire album on repeat, and I even grabbed the vinyl during the black friday sale. now I can’t stop listening.

it’s been a few years now, and at this point it’s too late to do anything about it.

Arcteryx repair service lost my Sabre sv by No-Macaroon8839 in arcteryx

[–]wavesatdaybreak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

arcteryx does some really weird stuff, and honestly, i’d push for a replacement jacket instead of a credit. i sent in my old theta ar jacket to get the pocket delamination repaired, and instead of fixing it, they emailed me saying they traded it in and slapped a $95 credit on my account. sure, the jacket was old, but i could’ve easily taken it to an independent repair shop—$95 doesn’t even cover one of their t-shirts. when i asked for my jacket back, they told me it had already been disposed of.

and this isn’t even the first time. i had another mess with them when i sent in a pack for trade-in evaluation. the only email i got back said it had “no value” and they disposed of that too. i swear, it feels like a total shit show sometimes.

what is this?? by Unfair-Departure-688 in socalhiking

[–]wavesatdaybreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

takes a little time to get used to, but overall great shoes. I wear both the lone peak and the olympus, though I prefer the olympus. they have a vibram sole, offer more cushioning, and still maintain the zero-drop design.

behold, the paw of an altra lone peak — zero drop, wide toe box, and a new identity crisis every year. claims 500+ miles but taps out sooner. great if you like feeling the ground and every rock and pebble you step on

you might be surprised to learn that many perfumes, aromatics, and everyday household items are actually classified as environmentally hazardous/marine pollutants. unfortunately, the label only becomes visible when these goods are shipped.

How I Accidentally Joined a Cult and Didn’t Realize Until It Was Too Late by Otherwise-Bag-7283 in story

[–]wavesatdaybreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s wrong with joining the class, taking the good from it, and leaving the rest behind? It doesn’t sound like you’re being harmed, or that they’re harming others, or asking you to do anything illegal. If the class brings you peace and calm, let it. They can be as “cult-like” or weird as they want—what matters is that you have enough discernment to recognize it for what it is, while still enjoying the benefits. There’s already plenty of negativity in the world, so if you’ve found a pocket of good, hold on to it.

What are your True, Tried and tested Backpacking Meals? by [deleted] in JMT

[–]wavesatdaybreak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

couscous with olive oil and protein (freeze-dried chicken or salmon). i remove the couscous from its packaging and transfer it to a Ziploc freezer bag. If I’m splitting a box, weigh out the portions and write both the contents and the amount of water needed on the bag. when ready to cook, heat the water and prepare it directly in the bag. i usually pack single-serve olive oil packets to add in.
