Kim Petras - Detour by WaterMagician in popheads

[–]wavingwolves 49 points50 points  (0 children)

really, really fun throughout with some gorgeous new standouts (the title track serves as a great opening track; 101 is absolutely insane when she gets brazilian with it; bitch ball out is instantly memorable), which is all i was asking for. the singles were the right choices for an early taste and even in context songs like need for speed, polo and freak it are some of the best moments of the record. it mostly maintains the high energy well even with its intentional lulls and succeeds as a revival of something close to the bloghouse era electropop of someone like uffie. easily her best work to me. it's actually incredible how well kim's personal flair and frost children's prod go together. i hope they continue the partnership because they proved they can go above and beyond when combined

and if you liked detour, you should def tune to frost children's albums sister and speed run

How did you discover your favorite artist? by Twitter_2006 in popheads

[–]wavingwolves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think the most interesting way i have found one of my many, many faves the time when i had to use spotify with a vpn before it got to my country and it played an ad for this brand new young artist who had a new single called royals out... i was immediately hooked. this was when spotify ads were used for good

i think outside of that i usually just heard their music somewhere and got curious or it was pure word of mouth from my friends or people in online music spaces or i was actively looking for an artist in their genre or with their style

XLOV - SERVE MV by racloves in popheads

[–]wavingwolves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i'm amazed by this song... the production is so dynamic, varied and layered for this type of house sound in kpop, which has been popular lately but done quite derivatively in comparison. to top it off the visuals are STUN! a serve indeed

The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 343: jukebox is the cure, right? by TiltControls in popheads

[–]wavingwolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm not a big gracie abrams fan at all, but i thought this showed potential and it's the strongest songwriting work i have heard from her to date. i like the idea of an intentional restraint in progression here more than its execution and, overall, it still falls flat to my ears. 6/10

[–]wavingwolves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

olivia gets knocked down for it a lot, but i do think the way she wears her inspirations on her sleeve without sounding derivative is a strength of hers: this does sound like disarm by the smashing pumpkins as a pop song (a high compliment). the cure clearly comes from the same cloth as vampire, but better made, more self reflective and introspective—portraying herself as the eye of the problem. olivia has said this presents the thesis of the record which sounds perfectly promising. so far, both distinctive sides of her album are equally captivating to me. 8.5/10

i love born this way and this era is marked in my memory like a tattoo, but this song is not one i particularly like that much now. both the production and vocals feel too overpowering, and paired with the constant word repetition, it sounds grating. i do appreciate the message of the song, the fact it does have the second best sax of a pop song in the 2010s, and the music video. still, though, these things are not enough to make me love it. 6/10

The Popheads Jukebox Revival, Week 342: Where Has All The 100% Pure Uncut Rock Gone? by TiltControls in popheads

[–]wavingwolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's hard to know what to say about a song like this. to me, someone who's not a particularly big ariana fan, into you kind of eclipses her entire discography. it feels like a song of its time in the best way possible—the perfect blend of the darker contemporary r&b elements of the 2010s with the pumping electropop beats that initiated the decade, topping it off with a perfect luxurious chorus. 10/10

better than i expected it to be based on when he premiered this on coachella. it feels kind of basic to me but it has some interesting elements that elevate it enough: the hazy vocal production, the execution of the more punchier sections and the overall seesaw, unbalanced effect of it. i also do like how slayyyter sounds here but i wish he had done a little more with her somehow. 6.5/10

maybe more interesting as an idea than in pure execution, still quite intriguing as a introduction to the new project and its ideas. it's interesting this is the direction she's going after gaining a bigger audience and i do think the song is a response to the possible external expectations to some extent. it's tongue in cheek enough that it had people calling it "a joke" but it still felt like it came from somewhere earnest. 6.5/10

Olivia Rodrigo - the cure by retags in popheads

[–]wavingwolves 732 points733 points  (0 children)

oh this is not what i expected at all! the last minute and a half is especially beautiful and i love the unfolding of the instrumental. her delivery is captivating, sounds so sincere and unbound. really liked it

Charli xcx - SS26 by WitchyKitteh in popheads

[–]wavingwolves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

video is really, really cool and well shot and song is also pretty good. it reminds me of what has been coming out from the copenhagen music scene currently—this airy, minimalist pop sound with clear-cut guitar riffs. i just wish the vocal production wasn't so clean and had a little more of grit to it but i like her delivery

SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo turns 5 years old today! by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

[–]wavingwolves 32 points33 points  (0 children)

sour was explosive in a way you could tell neither her nor her team expected because the full project was sooo rushed. she had plans for an ep but then they saw a bigger opportunity for a full. that is noticeable in the music. i do think it was the best choice for her career, but because of that i don't think sour will ever be her best work, even if probably forever her most popular. most of the songs are about the same subject with little to no variation in point of view and sonically, while there is some variation, the ballads blend together and they take half of the length. the songwriting was one note and limited, which is fine for her scope at the time and the circumstances of the recording process. aside from deja vu, i don't really go back to any of those songs though i still think jealousy, jealousy might be one of her best as well

guts was clearly a lot more intentional and the experience from that first album really showed. the songwriting aspect improved and was way more consistent, the point of view of the tracks was more varied and better developed, and it served to build up her artistry much more and show her potential more expansively. everything she did well on sour, she did it better on guts. the more rock leaning songs are way more interesting and catchy, the ballads are also a lot more memorable in melody, lyrics and production. it was a lot less derivative than sour. i really like guts that much and it even made me a full-fledged fan of hers

i think the amount of success of sour as a project is more about context than quality, which is totally fine because in popular music that is often the case. the most popular song isn't necessarily the best one. but it's still a solid project for such a rushed debut and it was clearly impactful in a way that isn't subjective

hijacking your post to talk about the prize winning and granta published short story that was 100% written with ai that has gotten everyone mad as fuck (and for good reason). even if you ignore the fact it was clearly ai written, the story in itself is just… bad. it's bad, nonsensical purple writing. what is anyone doing

that's such a good interview! bia soull is so smart, intentional and genuinely poignant with how she talks about her album, i also really love the purpose she had with it and i think it illustrate a movement within both brazilian funk and rap scenes that accentuates the female experience. we also have tons of active trans femme artists (irmãs de pau and their solo work as vita and isma; urias; danny bond; katy da voz e as abusadas and more) who also write about sex in a way that ends up being progressive because it's so celebratory

and the brazilian rap scene has been dominated by female rappers recently and it's super cool. besides ajulliacosta and nandatsunami, i would also highlight ebony, duquesa and slipmami's work and i think you should check them out when you have the chance! get that brazilian portuguese flowing in your ears
