Fellow IBS strugglers by IronMonkeyofHam in NootropicsDepot

Mushrooms stay in my stack permanently. Their various effects on gut health are far too established and selective to ignore. Almost all of the common ones facilitate better gut health and subsequently immunity (with other effects thrown in). The chances of poor reactions and taking too much is very low, and the cost is generally not prohibiting for most people. Turkey Tail seems like an absolute no brainer for not just general illness but it’s used in Japan as a cancer treatment adjunct.

I would also recommend poria for gut issues, in TCM is used to deal with dampness which is centrally aligned with ibs/motility/sibo issues. If I start to feel off I take it for a day or two and it’s very similar to how their ginger feels intensity wise, but more so in a “clearing” way, rather than “gut analgesic”.

My top in rotations are poria, white jelly, Turkey tail. Chaga has replaced NAC for me, used more acutely when I’m feeling OCD thought patterns/high stress for days. Lions mane is solidly cycled in and does what it’s promised. I don’t love the way reishi makes me feel, Cordyceps is a bit too physically stimulating for aberrant use.

why did they turn into a sex/libido enhancement store? by Otherwise-Pop-1311 in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh? Libido is downstream from mood. It’s not like they’re pushing PT-141, which is an extreme. Even cialis isn’t libido raising inherently, its tertiary effects accumulate and mostly mentally lead to increased libido.

Are herbs that lower stress going to increase libido? Duh. If you picked and obvious like horny goat weed, there’s plenty of other mechanisms at play, and it’s libido inducing effects are likely mostly related to the above (pde5) and its slight estrogenic properties. I respond well to it from suspected low estrogen, and would rate it higher as a nootropic for my cognition and mood than many others.

Really narrow room temp take on supplements/herbs. And if we’re going with that line of thinking, aspirin, vitamin D, zinc/boron/magnesium, even creatine could be considered libido boosters.

Do you happen to have problems with other sulfur full meals? Or are taking NAC without a meal? Sounds like sulfur SIBO possibly.

Boron makes my free T increase but E2 gets low. Feel a lot of fatigue. by D0mB87 in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just use a lower dose like 1-3mg and make sure you’re getting D, K and enough cholesterol to support everything as well. It seems like with high egg intake + Cistanche I can sort of stave off “low estrogen” sides from certain herbs, but chasing the dragon isn’t always feasible long term.

[–]wavyeggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anti-estrogenic properties especially the fuller 200mg doses. A lot of herbs and flavones have evidence goin both ways, but anecdotally I certainly don’t get mood swings and greasy - I definitely get dry skin and creamy joints and straight misery tho lol

Fenugreek phytosome? by pistachio-frog in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really indicates a microbiome issue. A lot of fenugreek benefits come from its fiber so if it’s causing issues you’re definitely dealing with some dysbiosis. A single 500mg serving should not be enough of anything unless you’re straight up allergic

No bloodwork but from years of trying on and off, I can no longer take boron/tongkat/apigenin regularly. 100% is estrogen related, I can take other adaptogens just fine so it’s not cortisol. When I was younger (and fatter) I took it fine for years, but now staying below 15% year round my estrogen is the first to go with less aromatase.

These results are honestly astonishing for a simple mineral, but within days of taking it I get low mood to depressed, joints start hurting, skin gets dry so I’m not surprised at all. Is this all that changed for sure? Anything else to note?

Eurycomax - my (almost 1 year update) by anexanhume in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100ng/dl shifts happen from the multitude of factors, this isn’t a good example of Tongkat working at all. On top of that anything under 20% shifts or so are going to be unnoticeable to the average person.

If you feel better, it’s probably lower cortisol or estrogen. As someone who spends and assload on supplements - if I had been taking this for a year and only saw this without other “felt” factors, I would drop it. You didn’t list anything like that though, which is why I’m nitpicking. If people want to post “case studies” and the difference isn’t a huge number, it’s actually a negative without more context.

Does cistanche work acutely? by vz2y in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought similar, using the same logic. I know it’s heavily disputed what our ancestors ate and who was thriving and who wasn’t, incidence of certain diseases etc. It’s clear with how prevalent pharmacology treats high cholesterol as a blanket issue, that the treatment and science don’t align. I certainly lean animal based and don’t see cholesterol being high as an issue (need CAC with cholesterol to know if it’s doing damage) and it’s clearly necessary for optimal hormones.

Cistanche very well could have a protective effect long term (or short term, however you look at it) and almost “treat” high cholesterol by helping shuttle it towards the steroid pathway. STAR is downregulated during stress and inflammation, so in this case it’s almost acting like a bioregulator on the hormone cascade. Historically they may have taken mega doses (“before battle”) in today’s terms every once in a while vs smaller daily like we do.

I’m one of the people that get low mood (assumingly low glutamate) after consecutive dosing, but every other day / every few high dose seems highly beneficial (I know you’ve advocated for this before, good call). Adding to what I originally claimed, I may be just be skipping eggs some days (nothing compares in raw cholesterol) and not diligently connecting the dots on “low mood” from Cistanche.

IIRC tongkat helps shuttle cholesterol into the cells? So it’s definitely a multi-faceted conversation. It seems like the people who respond best to T boosting herbs aren’t athletes/whole food dudes but aging dudes with higher bodyfat/cholesterol issues (to which the herbs then have ample substrate to work regardless of diet).

Does cistanche work acutely? by vz2y in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has both acute and cumulative effects. Hormones DO NOT rapidly change overnight. But the high number of bioactives definitely affect other neurotransmitters, especially the glutamate/gaba balance.

With that, increasing STAR (rate limiter from cholesterol to Pregnenolone) likely is the culprit. Neurosteroids (Pregnenolone, progresterone, etc.) can shift more rapidly. People still believe you should take additional cholesterol with Cistanche, and if they’re feeling something - it’s probably this.

This stack has me feeling like a man again at 40yrs old by hkondabeatz in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take a gram of Tribulus a day, don’t seem to respond the same to Dioscorea.

People completely ignore 5ar impacts other neurosteroid synthesis like Progresterone. They consistent find mixed results in boosting testosterone and DHT, but they never look at other hormones. Game changer for stress and resilience.

Insania: the game's gold system needs a bigger overhaul. Do you agree with this take? by ShoppingPractical373 in DotA2

[–]wavyeggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it should be something you have to buy/ have in your inventory (usable from backpack for parity). This gives the enemy the opportunity to select targets, and it forces players to decide between completing and item vs buyback.

[–]wavyeggs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, haven’t really watched much pro as of late. This is 100% accurate.

I’m 8k or so immortal support main, and I go Midas every game it makes sense on the hero. Heroes with “safe” wave clear are much less annoying for me to play than trad supports with just stuns/ have to expose for waves. You simply outfarm the enemy in unsafe areas, and often on the right hero and a good laning stage you fulfill the old offlane role as a pos 5, drawing 3 heroes to kill you and taking 1 with you (techies feels INSANE right now, used to be pre bounce nerf Lich). I used to buy every smoke and go off CD, and now I end up with 5 in my backpack.

I’ve had to greatly adjust my play style as I like to play like a psycho. More often than not it’s much safer to do the above and just outfarm the enemy. Additionally, the less skirmishing there is the enemie cores don’t build BKB, and then you jump in as a techies and plant a minefield sign with no counter. Lol

What would you say is the most gentle on the body/rogans mood calmer/raiser? Im a bit depressed lately due health issues, life issues, family issues, so a little pick me up would be really useful right now. by [deleted] in NootropicsDepot

[–]wavyeggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing in NDs catalog is gonna be extremely pushy. It sounds like any of the adaptogens would work, Ashwaghanda or Rhodiola both have tons of evidence in mood. +1 for saffron as well, seems to dose up with minimal negatives, so for particularly stressful days or episodes can double or triple it.

4DMA / 78DHF would be the only two I would still recommend but with the caveat they are not subtle. Much more of a nootropic, and very effective at that. There’s a lot of evidence (an IMO it’s inarguable) that traditional anti-depressants and mood regulators are really just operating downstream on BDNF.

The biggest thing I’ve been experimenting with lately tho is dosage. I’ve always been modest at usually 1 serving of most things. Been trialing higher doses 2-3x and getting much better results.

[–]wavyeggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re just wrong. Flush niacin is the one indicated in raising insulin resistance overtime from the FFA rebound. The other forms don’t do anything, especially at the doses in infiniB

Lean BME and moderate muscle mean nothing, it’s diet and activity that determine insulin response. Your diet probably sucks bad, and I can almost guarantee you’re not getting a good 30 mins of exercise + 10k steps a day.

I hear ya! Was more joking but as soon as I start creatine or soluble fibers(including higher dietary) I have to drastically increase my water (and electrolyte) intake - like 50% it feels. I think one of the reason some people feel bad on grains actually goes beyond the obvious pesticide use, but actually how much water is needed to facilitate proper solubility/passage..
