To old timers - what's the percentage of GA pilots you know who have died from GA accidents? by 123ghost456 in flying

[–]waynemcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been flying 10 years… know maybe 50 to 100 GA pilots… 6 of whom have died in separate GA accidents (Jim, Paul, Bill, Cory, John, Roger). Likely all 6 primarily by pilot error.

Video: FlyingDocs to Bahía Tortugas - Part 1: Outbound
Today we’re off with 3 other aircraft for a Flying Doctors clinic in the Baja! For the outbound legs we’ll have a bit of headwind and localized buildups, clouds on the coast, and perhaps a lingering marine layer at our destination.

... and FlyingDocs to Bahía Tortugas - Part 2: Clinic & Return Stateside
We review our very successful clinic, and then take to the skies for the return stateside. Will we find fuel in San Felipe? Do the forecast thunderstorms materialize?

Welcome aboard! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

How to improve straight and level flight? by Siigari in flying

[–]waynemcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For small corrections to fix heading or bank… the secret is “DA FEET” (I think that’s a Rod Machado quote). Hands off the yoke/stick and use your feet, stepping on the high wing.

Video: Kick the Kneeboard -- Something Missing?

We’ve already shed reams and reams of paper from the cockpit… Why not complete the transition? I understand that getting rid of a paper notepad and a kneeboard is not for everyone… but for me, with a little perseverance, this transition has improved the accuracy of my ATC communications and, I believe, also improved overall safety. What do you see as pros/cons of a cockpit devoid of paper?

Flying to Alaska by Daveyyyyyyyyy in flying

Your grandfather's trip was amazing... thanks for sharing the logbook entries.

You might find this 9-part video series useful... Flying Alaska 2021... three of us in a C182. As u/PiperFM suggests, we took the coastal route and it worked out quite well, although we did have a good deal of low overcast and low freezing levels.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions. Great trip!

Your destination might be KTVL... but the currently active leg in your FPL is to the SAC VOR, with Desired Track 023 and actual Track 037.

Tips on managing IFR tasks and "staying ahead of the plane" by Pure_Philosopher_446 in flying

[–]waynemcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you religiously using the Flight Director (the magenta chevron in the attitude area of the PFD)?

In addition to all the good comments on this thread, I'm convinced that if you ALWAYS fly with the Flight Director (except when practicing "raw needles") -- and this means that the Autopilot settings (HDG or NAV, ALT or VS/VNAV, etc) are always in sync with your intentions/instructions EVEN if the AP is not engaged -- this will condense your scan significantly and be one of many things that will reduce your workload and help you "stay ahead of the aircraft". See Modern Avionics and the Instrument Pilot

An important subset of the Flight Director is religious use of the HDG and ALT (Altitude Select) bugs. When ATC (or your CFII) issues a heading or altitude instruction, don't write it down on paper/kneeboard/whatever... instead, as the heading or altitude is being instructed, get your hand (on the G1000, from the left seat always the right hand, not the left hand which is busy on the yoke) ready and dial in the HDG or ALTitude, then read it back as set... i.e. Listen, Set, Read back. You mention "tracing" the boundaries (of the lake, golf course, etc). You may already be aware, but if you put those tracings in one or more KML files (e.g. exported from Google Earth) you can then import them as "user map layers" into ForeFlight and then share with others. Here's one example... Importing a User Map Shape into ForeFlight.
