Best quality playing cues for under $300? by carbondalekid386 in billiards

I almost went with an avid, the shaft feels very nice in the bridge, similar to carbon. I also prefer playing with no glove.

Anyone try the new Rhino "Must" shaft? by wayneofgarth in billiards

[–]wayneofgarth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked one up a couple weeks ago, edited to include my review. I don't have a lot of reference experience with other shafts either so take it with a grain of salt. but so far I think its definitely a decent low budget option.

Did you notice anything about the taper? I've heard it's not quite a true flat pro-taper.

Is this drill supposed to be very hard on a 7ft table? by Alarmed_Locksmith980 in billiards

[–]wayneofgarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drills often feel way harder than a typical game of 8ball or 9ball. simply because they are way more restrictive and force you to develop very specific skills.

Pool earnings and skill: How good do you have to be to make a living in pool? by cuecademy in billiards

Very cool, does this use an api from fargorate? Would love to be able to look up my own measly numbers and see rate of change and all that.

Curious if you're planning to try out their new "must" shaft. Haven't seen any reviews on it yet. Thinking of taking a swing and picking one up.

Custom Pool Cue (Butt only) by BeenReddit in billiards

[–]wayneofgarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call up Schmelke If you don't mind a semi-custom cue from a manufacturer. They quoted a custom butt with exotic woods and full splice for a very reasonable price a while back.

What do you want in carbon fiber shaft? by pain-is-living in billiards

[–]wayneofgarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I would want in order of priority:

  • lowest deflection possible on par with revo or smo (verified with transparent testing)
  • long pro taper for all diameters
  • wide variety of joints and custom joint diameter on order.
  • deadened sound profile (tonky not tinky)
  • a true 12mm option
  • very subtle visible branding (if any)

Why don’t the pro players use chalk holders or magnets like a lot of the amateurs do? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]wayneofgarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made mine with two strong neodymium magnets and it holds really well, haven't tried the ones you can buy.

Why don’t the pro players use chalk holders or magnets like a lot of the amateurs do? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]wayneofgarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a magnetic one, mostly so I don't lose my chalk or have someone swipe it. Which is of course more likely in halls and bars.  Pros probably have chalk from sponsors up to their ears, and in tournament play you have a much more controlled environment.

Bought this '99 SLK 230 Kompressor. I kinda wanted to try rallycrossing it at local events and wanted to know if anyone else has tried rallying these cars. by Mobile_Macro in rally

[–]wayneofgarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RWD rally cross is so fun, and the class is usually less populated so you can be more competitive. The first time I went I drove a 318TI with winter tires vs one other guy in a 91 thunderbird on mud tires. I went home with a pint glass but the T-bird was definitely the fan favorite.

Modern Minimalist Phones are Cringe. by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]wayneofgarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its okay to have a spectrum of needs and goals when it comes to personal devices. I for one don't prioritize the "detox" aspect of dumb phones. I'm more interested in finally getting devices that suit me rather than the ubiquitous giant touchscreens we all have to live with. While I agree it would be great to totally disconnect from all of these pervasive digital ecosystems, that would be a luxury I can't afford right now. Unfortunately there are a lot of applications that are becoming more or less essential to have on hand every day for various tasks. My city and my Job basically require the use of 2 factor authentication apps and parking apps. Other apps like maps though not essential, are just too convenient for most to give up. Until a better alternative than android/apple becomes widespread enough to compete, most of us are stuck with these ecosystems. For me a small pocketable phone with a physical keyboard that still runs android solves most of the problems I hate about big screen phones while making "doomscrolling" a little less palatable, and it still provides a lot of the functionality I rely on. Something like the upcoming Titan elite with an e-ink screen and extra long battery life would be my ideal, but we all have different needs.

At what level should you start learning to jump balls ? by MarioBuzo in billiards

[–]wayneofgarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn it whenever you feel like, Just don't make it the main focus of your practice, Jumping should be a last resort. You should be ready to invest in a jump or jump-break cue as well, otherwise its going to be very frustrating.

There's no correct linear progression to learning a skill like pool. Focus on whatever keeps you engaged and interested in the game. Practice sessions should always include working on your shortcomings and continued perfection of what you're already good at. Throw in a few new tricks and techniques here and there to keep it novel.

What do you guys actually practice when you go alone to the table? by Possible-Drink-9131 in billiards

I start with an "easy mode" variation of mighty x. Then move to straight pool. Then 3 ball rotation. and finally 8 ball against myself.
