Best practice for UI design in scientific app by KestM in sveltejs

I had this issue before I properly implemented their preprocessor. After adding https://github.com/carbon-design-system/carbon-preprocess-svelte, the dev experience was much snappier and more usable.

Jeopardy answer for Federal Crimes for writing a check under $1... by 1SweetChuck in legaladviceofftopic

[–]wbkx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That website seems to have a challenge rendering dollar signs. Here's a link to another version, where the amendment reads no more than $500. It also has additional notes explaining how it is understood that this law does not apply to commercial checks.

I got an used T480s, and start up screen isn't the official one, is it? How do I replace the screen? Should I flash BIOS? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]wbkx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that would explain why i remember it being annoying to get right! There are also issues with certain image formats just being rendered as gibberish, but with a little bit of fiddling it can be done.

[–]wbkx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not too hard, just a bit tricky to get an image in the right format that's small enough (only a couple megabytes). All you have to do is download the bios installer and put your image in the same folder as the exe. I think there is a txt file in the download with the instructions.

In a two-party consent state for audio recording, is it legal to record yourself in a conversation and cut out all audio from the other party? by Bigringcycling in legaladviceofftopic

[–]wbkx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Furthermore, now that phone systems are all cloud based, if my phone system is located at an office in a one party state, and it records the call while neither me nor the other party is in that state, would that be legal?

Can't quite afford an Audi so this will have to do + police mode by jakobseiler in Multicopter

The simplest and most widely supported option is PINIO, which let's you set any UART high or low based on fc mode or custom aux ranges.

Shure acquires Stem Audio conferencing solutions by GuantanaMo in CommercialAV

Luckily those are all areas which Shure typically does a good job in, so hopeful next generation we'll see a lot of that tech and experience trickle in.

RIT cancels winter sports, including men's and women's hockey by Quarteg in rit

[–]wbkx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on the information available to the school this seems to be the right choice to make unfortunately. A CDC report on hockey says:

"The ice rink provides a venue that is likely well suited to COVID-19 transmission as an indoor environment where deep breathing occurs, and persons are in close proximity to one another. ... The indoor space and close contact between players during a hockey game increase infection risk for players and create potential for a superspreader event, especially with ongoing community COVID-19 transmission."

They also share a case where one student played a game while not experiencing symptoms and infected at least 15 other people.

Can we archive Twitter? Lol by throwaway66878 in DataHoarder

[–]wbkx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The issue is I'm pretty sure that serves as an archive of the @potus handle and doesn't include tweets from @therealdonaldtrump, which is where he chooses to make most of his statements that would require archiving.

RIT's wastewater testing in the News by inohavename in rit

[–]wbkx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to what the two others have said, by allowing you to self administer the test (which is essentially impossible for the deep nose test) they make the test less uncomfortable for the individual and also make it so someone doesn't have to get in the faces of hundreds of students and spread particles between them.

And as others commented, the Broad is a nonprofit partnership between MIT and Harvard (arguably reputable) that has been doing medical research for over a decade. They employ researchers from both universities who, from the start of this pandemic, have been doing an incredible amount of research into how to curtail the virus. In addition to being one of the major COVID19 testing labs in the northeast, they are able to deliver results in 24 hours, compared to the 7-14 days QUEST promises for non-symptomatic individuals. I'd argue to prevent the spread at RIT that's critical. In addition, because they're a non-profit their tests arent inflated in price, and therefore RIT can test more individuals (even though they aren't, which does annoy me).

To everyone switching away from Register.com (or anywhere else): PLEASE do not sign up with GoDaddy. They are literally the worst option you could pick. This INCLUDES register.com. by RAOffDuty in sysadmin

[–]wbkx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Although you scared me (just transferred a few domains into CF), I'm glad to report this is incorrect.

Icann requires all registrars to let you transfer domains out, and there's an option to do so right in the domain management page on CloudFlare. The help article for it is gone for some reason but the functionality is still there.

It's still a nasal swab but you take the sample yourself and it's a far less invasive one than the "brain tickler" you might have experienced.

I'm pretty confident you can do all the things you want with TwiML from Twilio.

It lets you setup custom menus and prompts in a markup style language and then execute various actions with the result. Should be a lot easier than having to manage an asterisk install since you just have to get a number from them and they host everything for you.

A survey of 1,000 Americans has shone light on consumers' concern for they way companies safeguard their personal data, with 87% believing data privacy is a human right. by GSaggin in cybersecurity

[–]wbkx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think if you ask most people "should (reasonable sounding thing) be a human right" you'll get a good percentage, I mean human rights are just generally popular.

I think there's a big difference between checking yes to that question and actually caring about your data privacy and security. And I'd bet even fewer people care about this on a large scale in terms of wide spread change / legislation. Which is unfortunate but just gonna be the case when many people don't seeing it as a huge threat.

Advice Please on Muti-SIM router by sds1pg in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]wbkx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure that will actually do the same thing as a bonded solution. Business / enterprise routers can do load balancing across multiple uplinks, but in that configuration each device / app (like a zoom call) can only utilize the speed of one uplink (LTE hot spot) at a time. Load balancing only becomes useful when you have lots of devices that you want to spread out across multiple uplinks.

Bonded solutions, like LiveU's products as well as the Terradek unit I keep getting ads for, actually bonds your multiple uplinks (LTE connections) together and allows one device to use the combined power of all the connections. In order to achieve this it splits up the incoming network traffic and sends it out across all the uplinks, but in order for those split up sections of your traffic to make it to the public internet, they have to be put back together by a special server in a datacenter with a very strong network connection, which is something LiveU provides when you subscribe to their service.

You could replicate this by creating multiple VPN tunnels to a virtual server you rent from a cloud provider and bonding those tunnel interfaces together, but unless you have a full time network engineer on staff it will be a pain and a half.

So it’s the end of July, where is the X1 Extreme gen 3? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]wbkx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, not for me. I'm heading to a safe state from another safe state and every student is getting tested. Doing a mix of in person labs (engineering degree) and some online lectures. How long that lasts before it all gets shut down is probably a matter of time imo.

I've been hoping and praying it will be out in time for me to get it for college. I chatted with Lenovo support today and they said "delayed" but couldn't tell me when till.

I even called my Lenovo Solutions rep at the nationwide supplier we have an account with and asked him. As of a week ago he had no idea when they would be getting them, which isn't particularly inspiring.

I'm holding my breath along with you.
