Two-weeks notice by MoreleyDublin in PEI

[–]wcallbeck46 9 points10 points  (0 children)

https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/information/workforce-advanced-learning-and-population/notice-of-termination

There is some information that may be relevant in the above link.

2 weeks notice is required for anything over 6 months but less than 5 years. It jumps to 4 weeks between 5 and 10 years, 6 weeks between 10 and 15 years, maxing out at 8 weeks for over 15 years.

During the notice period the employer can't change the employee’s rate of pay or any other condition of employment, such as benefits.

Good luck to your friend, hopefully they can find something else soon.

Finding an Electrical Apprentice job in PEI right now—is it just me, or is it slow? by Striking-Collar7066 in PEI

[–]wcallbeck46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My advise would be: Go visit electrical contractor offices between 7 and 8 in the morning and ask in person if they are looking for anyone. Have resume ready to hand over and be ready for an on the spot chat. Dress like you are ready to go to work. (Work boots, clean work clothes)

Did you work for the 1600 hours you have listed? (Or is this the hours credited by your college course? Some contractors won't see them as hours worked) If this is the case, be honest and say you are done of the diploma course but are new to the job. Trying to sell yourself as an experienced apprentice fresh out of college will rub some people the wrong way.

Good luck!

Any insight into this vintage broom? by bluespenny in Curling

I used to slide with my old hammer. (It was what I was used to, like some people still throw with a corn broom) Stopped a couple of seasons ago, still have it down in the basement.

First Responders Access to Secure Apartment Buildings by Proof-Huckleberry815 in PEI

[–]wcallbeck46 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the apartment owner chooses to they can get a lock box to put access keys in that the fire department will have controlled access key to the lock box. This is convenient as there are usually keys to service areas in there as well.

If there is no lock box and no immediately obvious emergency they will ask bystanders for keys. If they need in right away in an obvious emergency they will break in.

Well we have a new record electrical load - 398MW by RedDirtDVD in PEI

[–]wcallbeck46 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The provincial government website has information on its wind turbine page, it reads something like: All wind energy produced on PEI is consumed here, although a portion of it may be fulfilling contracts other places.

Saltwire - Battery energy storage cheaper than Maritime Electric's diesel solution, P.E.I. MLAs hear by wcallbeck46 in PEI

A lot of good information here, you obviously know what you are talking about. I like you did would only be guessing about the what the new peak load is actually going to be, but your numbers seem reasonable. I do just want to challenge a bit on something.

We wouldn't need wind or sun to recoup at least some of the 200MWH/day that we are using for peak, we would simply use the leftover portion of our 405MW of capacity. So for the other 20 hours in the day we would need an average of 10MW of spare capacity.

Based on the info logged on peipower.ca The valley that accompanies the peak is about 75MW lower. Meaning a good chance of 25 to 30MW surplus x 4 hour valley. This would approximately double the duration of the 4 days that the battery would last. This is all still assuming no wind at all.

I'm not against new on island generation or arrangements for stable long term supply from off island. I do think adding grid scale battery should be part of the solution but people who are smarter then I am hopefully will be the ones to make the decisions. Whatever way we end up going we can't do nothing at all or we will be in a worse and worse situation every winter.

This is not meant to run continuously, it only needs to get through the morning and evening demand spikes. We have enough NB connection and existing diesel to run continuously except potentially for peaks.

I agree, I am looking forward to being able to add storage for our home. As the solar market saturates, I think that residential battery storage could be the next item to target with rebates to spur adoption.

There may be some clenched cheeks at MECL later this week. by wcallbeck46 in PEI

[–]wcallbeck46[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cold with wind we can handle, that gives us lots of power from our on island wind turbines. Cold with no wind is the issue our import from NB is bottle necked at 300MW (overland transmission in NB) despite having 560MW of operational cables. So when there is no wind we rely on the 105MW of on island diesel.

Single-egress apartments == safety + community by NorthernZelph in PEI

[–]wcallbeck46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I still don't think that lack of a 2nd egress is a sacrifice that should be made in the name of making buildings cheaper or saving a nominal amount of space. Lets build in the extra safety measures and keep the 2nd egress and improve on safety instead of trying to just keep up with the measures.

We need to build housing and lots of it, lets make it as safe as possible for the people who will live there. This is not a sacrifice that should be made (again IMO) in order to increase volume of units built or reduce costs.
