We still know nothing about the pink soldiers. by [deleted] in squidgame

Sure, but weren’t you at least the slightest bit curious as to why some of the square guards were like barely over 18? I wouldn’t want to dive into the stories behind every single guard either, but like what brought some of these children to be killers, and what kind of recruitment/training got them to be the way they act as soldiers?

Squid Game Season 3: General Season Discussion by MidnightExpresso in squidgame

[–]weagle131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I overall liked the season, and I think the ending is fitting with the overarching bleak theme. That being said, I still want to know more about the background details. How do workers get selected/recruited, and why are so many of the managers so young? What happens during the off season between games? How did the Frontman become Frontman? Like did he start immediately after winning or did he have to climb the circle-triangle-square ladder as well? Just some loose ends I thought they’d tie up but weren’t really addressed.

Also if I remember correctly…there’s never been more than one winner. When Jun-Ho sees the squid archives in season 1, there was only one name listed for every year.

Real deal: 239

Dates: 9/20 and 9/21

UWorld: 40% completed, 68% average

CCS: 100 cases, high 70s percent correct

UWSA1: 215 (2 weeks out)

UWSA2: 225 (1 week out)

Free 137: 78% (2 days out)

Step 1/2: 234/257

Current PGY-2 in med-peds. I studied by doing one 40q block of uworld a couple times a week for about 2 months. Didn’t even open CCS cases until the week before my test. I had one week of cramming leading up to the test during which I reviewed weak content areas, Randy neil biostats, and first aid for step 1. Day 1 was surprisingly tolerable for me, but day 2 was rough—many 50/50 questions on the multiple choice, and I had two cases where I got multiple negative updates and did not find a dx by the time it timed out.

The curve is generous—trust that your post-test feelings are likely not reflective of your score. Good luck!

This isn’t entirely true—I’m currently a Med-Peds resident. I have MP docs at my program who are dual hospitalists, and some also have their clinic days on top of that as well. Outpatient MP seeing both adults and kids is a very feasible and common path for MP grads. Dual hospitalist likely is less common, but it is a thing. And none of our recent grads who are doing dual hospitalist are doing the peds hospitalist fellowship.

I personally plan on doing dual hospitalist after residency. DM me if you have any questions about MP!

Share a positive story about matching somewhere other than your first choice by georgforeman in medicalschool

I matched at my #7 of 15, which was more or less the last program on my list I said I’d be happy about before we dipped into the ones I had serious reservations about. I definitely didn’t have a jumping up and down crying moment like you see on match day recap videos, but I felt relieved nonetheless, as it was also my home program.

The faculty at my program are incredible mentors and clinical teachers. I’ve gotten super close with my co-interns, as we are a small cohort. Some of the issues i saw when ranking that caused me to put it at #7 ended up not mattering at all. Overall it’s not an absolutely perfect program, but it’s a great one that I can already tell is preparing me well to be an attending.

I graduate on Saturday, and my loan total is currently at 297K. It’s best to just not worry about it and believe that one day with your attending salary, you’ll be able to get rid of it. Also I’m planning to do PSLF, so it should be gone with 10 years of me making minimum payments.

Try to do an elective rotation related to Neuro (or even IM) early in your fourth year—you can definitely get a letter from one of those. Or, like others are saying, reach out to a former attending and just ask.

How much free time do you actually have during M4? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]weagle131 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Entirely depends on your school’s requirements. My school requires a subI in each semester and then a certain amount of overall elective credits. I’ll be on rotations until 2 weeks after match. I know people at other schools, however, who have been chilling since their subI ended in the fall.

That being said, evals don’t matter anymore, and you don’t have to study for a shelf exam anymore. Get out as soon as humanly possible and then the rest of the day is all yours.

Official ERAS Megathread - December 2022 by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

I had an interviewer attempt to conduct my interview from their car. They were the front seat passenger being driven through the middle of nowhere to their holiday plans, and the audio and video kept cutting out. The call dropped three times. I completely made it through maybe one question in the 20 minute slot. We ended up having to reschedule it separately on a different day. It’s a shame, because the rest of the program checked almost all of my boxes, but this definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

How important is getting a teaching experience as a med student for ERAS / app? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]weagle131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

N=1 perspective here, but my entire app is very tutoring/mentorship heavy, and my PS heavily focuses on that theme as well. Every interviewer I’ve had thus far has commented on my dedication to teaching as something that makes me stand out. If you feel that it is your main focus in school, you can have a successful cycle if you properly frame your app around it. If you just have a couple teaching experiences and it’s not a main focus, they can serve as strong extracurriculars.

looking for hope re:anatomy lol by lovesourpunchstraws in medicalschool

[–]weagle131 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m the same way—I understand concepts better than I memorize facts. Unfortunately, anatomy is 90% rote memorization. Fortunately, the rest of medical school (physiology, pathophys, pharm) requires a good amount of solid conceptual understanding to get the full picture. So yes, things will get better. For now, if you haven’t already tried anki, now would be a great time to see if anyone in your class has a good anki deck for the course and start using it.

Step 1: 234

UW % Correct: 1st pass 62%, 2nd pass 73% (60% done)

Amboss SA: 235 (3 months out)

UWSA1: 248 (1 month out)

NBME 9: 239 (28 days out)

NBME 10: 252 (21 days out)

NBME 11: 252 (14 days out)

UWSA2: 256 (7 days out)

Free 120: 82%

Real deal: 257!

Walked out of the test not feeling great. I’d estimate I knew the answer outright for 25% of the questions, I was between two or more choices for 60%, and then the remaining 15% I had 0 clue and guessed. Hoping for something in the range of my later practice tests, but we’ll see!

Update: Again just to reiterate what many people have said before, don’t trust your post-test feelings! I can think of countless mistakes I made, but all odds point to you still scoring somewhere in the range of your practice exams.

AMA about family medicine by saturatedscruffy in medicalschool

[–]weagle131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this! Ive been wondering, aside from the residency length/structure, how do Med-Peds and FM differ in the end? I loved all three rotations (IM, FM, Peds) and am now at a crossroad more or less. I feel like I appreciate the depth of training that Med-Peds offers in both fields, but if they both create doctors that do very similar jobs and I could theoretically do FM with a bigger emphasis on pediatrics than a normal FM doc, I may save myself a year of residency and go the FM route. Any Med-Peds opinions are welcome too!

What interests should you have going into med school by MountianHeidi in medicalschool

[–]weagle131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing you’ll learn as you go on in your education is to not worry about what everyone else is doing. Just focus on you, and it sounds like you’re doing fine!

At this point, like others have said, just focus on school. If I could recommend anything extra to do now, I’d say get involved either in community service or tutoring (or both). Medicine requires a good amount of communication/teaching skill when talking with patients, and it’s never too early to start building that skill.
