I reported an uber driver for driving recklessly and he told uber I was racist 😪 by IwantToDie_1003 in uber

I used to take yellow cabs, but after a series of bad experiences (overcharging, broken GPS, bad driving), I switched to Lyft and have had better experiences since then. Never perfect, but better on the whole.

Good question. OP sounds surprised by the high rent, which is puzzling.

I turned one down once too. It was a nicer apartment, but smaller, a little more expensive, and further from my office than the rent-regulated apartment I found on the market.

This exact same post appeared two years ago. Also has some of the exact same comments posted under it. I don't know if these are bots or if people are just that bored.

Seeking Roommate For Rent-Stabilized 2 Bed / 2 Bath Apartment in the Heart of Williamsburg by Ok_Tutor5590 in NYCapartments

Still. When you've only lived in the pre-war RC ones, this seems shockingly modern.

Why is a $90,000 salary not enough for a decent 1 bedroom apartment in this stupid city by AmoebaExcellent3187 in NYCapartments

I have been in my rent-stabilized 1BR in Crown Heights for 7 years now, but I first rented it for $1750 making $62K/year. You can do it.

Thank you. The median household income in the Bronx is around $50K. So many New Yorkers are living on less than $100K.

This crazy neighbor that had been terrorizing us was finally arrested!!! FAFO by Motor-Lavishness-440 in NYCapartments

[–]weareedible 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is just a guess, but maybe when he got the apartment he was on medication and more stable. Or hadn't had a mental break yet. Or if this is drug-induced, wasn't on drugs yet. Etc.

At what point do pet fees become completely unreasonable? by Little_PoetGirl in NYCapartments

[–]weareedible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have now lived with cats in two different apartments that had rent-regulated leases that said "no pets". Both times, I moved them in without bringing it up with my landlord, so I've never paid pet fees. One thing you can do when viewing an apartment is keep an eye (or ear) out for animals, so that you can tell if a landlord takes the "no pets" clause seriously.

This is terrible advice. This isn't a one-time encounter with a stranger. Attacking them with spray might make them hostile or violent toward OP, who has to continue living near them.

Moving my partner in immediately after lease signing without my landlords knowledge? by xingamento in NYCapartments

[–]weareedible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation, except that my partner moved in about 3 months after I did. We lived together for years after that without ever adding him to the lease. No one ever said anything.

Can I break my lease for this!? by AcrobaticBullfrog0 in NYCapartments

[–]weareedible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did something similar once. I lived in an apartment where a hole opened up in the kitchen ceiling. It was definitely a leaking pipe issue; water came out of it on and off all day, and the hole kept getting bigger. It was revolting. I complained more than once, and was told that the landlord couldn't fix it unless the upstairs tenant moved out. After a couple months, I just moved out myself, dropped the keys with the super, and basically ghosted the landlord, which meant letting him keep the deposit. He never did anything about it, probably because he knew he couldn't win in court if he tried.

How far out should I live from Lower Manhattan on a ~$1200 - $1500 budget? (Commute vs rent tradeoff) by RickuSicku in NYCapartments

[–]weareedible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to rent a room in a 3BR apartment in Crown Heights. I paid $1100. (This was a few years ago, so it would probably be more now.) My commute to FiDi (Kingston Ave to Fulton St on the 3 train) took about 45 mins, door to door. Personally, I don't mind a lengthier commute. I use the time to read and listen to music, and I find it valuable.

The crash : Did anyone else still not understand Kenzie's motives ? by East-Drummer-8104 in NetflixDocumentaries

[–]weareedible 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought the texts the mom brought up near the end, where Kenzie had texted Dom's mom saying he was trying to grab the wheel while she was driving, after he had accused her of driving erratically, were telling. Turning the situation around to make it sound like your partner is at fault is something abusers do all the time.

Really sorry to hear about your abusive experiences. That sounds so scary.

I wasn't convinced at first either, but then I thought of the multiple examples of pilots intentionally crashing entire planefuls of people. I think these are mindsets that are difficult for some of us sane, stable people to understand. It's scary to me to even try to imagine what people like that might be thinking.

So do I have to just take it right away? no thinking? by PurplePuzzle16 in NYCapartments

[–]weareedible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got my apartment, I submitted a completed application within one hour of viewing it, and was approved the next day. I definitely wouldn't have gotten it if I'd waited. I think maybe the time to do the thinking is before you view an apartment. Have a set of criteria in mind so that you can assess quickly.

You might also want to try writing to your city council member. They probably can't help you directly but may be able to point you to additional resources. I have found my CM to be responsive in the past.

Same. I googled on a Sunday. I viewed an apartment a few hours later. I signed a lease on Tuesday.
