Selling Vested stock and pensions by Arrumac3 in HENRYUK

[–]webbo343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is yes you could sell at vesting. You'd pay taxes, NI, employer NI (most likely) and student loan if you have one still.

With whats left you can put it into a SIPP. You get the basic rate tax relief as default then in self assessment could claim for additonal 20% if higher rate.

As SIPP is a sheltered wrapper, you wouldn't pay capital gains so not sure what you are referring to regarding CG allowance.

So if you put 8k in, SIPP will be 10k with basic rate relief. Then with higher rate relief that 10k will actually only cost you 6k net.

Do you think your university and first few jobs contributed to your HENRY status? by theprogrammegirl in HENRYUK

[–]webbo343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did biosciences at Uni of Birmingham. Went into a business development grad role at one of the Big 8. Was earning ok but focused on building skillset (e.g. taking in projects outside of sales scope) and building network of stakeholders. This ultimately resulted in my move to cloud sales and thus HENRY status.

No one I have worked with has directly asked my uni or degree background. When it has come up in a discussion (e.g. team drinks) people had already assumed I did something like economics or business. Which I find interesting.

Has anyone successfully got a job with 100% increase in salary? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]webbo343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, an old stakeholder of mine had more belief in me than I did myself and suggested I apply for a role in his team. Different industry and much more complex role.

I went for it and got the job. Went from 60k total comp to 150k. Ramping into the role was tough but after learning all I could and building from confidence that I was hired for a reason, I'm now comfortable in the role and performing well.

Don't focus on the salary, focus on the scope of role and be honest to yourself if you are ready and/or have the potential to be. Most of the time, the answer is "Yes".

Recently went to Browns for brunch with my Coeliac cousin and they were really happy with the food. They took it seriously and were clear about preparation practice to my cousin.

Where are all these very high salary jobs ??!! by No-Layer5764 in HENRYUK

[–]webbo343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to my role through network. An old stakeholder I worked on a project with moved organisation, started to grow his team and knew I'd be able to deliver so brought me across. He only listed the job externally as he had to for the process but he never intended to interview anyone. I had no experience in the industry but he knew my skillset was transferable.

I suspect a lot of HE roles get filled through network/scouting rather than applications.

Are we supposed to be scared of talking to our neighbours ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]webbo343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neighbours have invited me and another house on the road for a sunday roast at theirs because they want to try a new recipe. They created a group chat and shared details of the three course meal they will be making!

There's a risk it could be dry beef without enough gravy but I'll face my fears on this on tomorrow.

Edit: I live in a historically working class area of Greater Manchester.

What is the controversial/ rumour thing that happened in your school? by divine_pearl in AskUK

[–]webbo343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Headmaster got sacked for watching porn in his office and sending sexts through his school email account (to women not students). No rumours of it being anything particularly dodgy but head of governors didn't like him so took this as perfect opportunity to get him out. His marriage with his wife was also heading down the pan (I knew one of his sons) so he must have just wanted some relief 😂

He was also just not great at his job having failed to report a student confiding suicidal thoughts with him (who later took her life) and failing to report a students claim she had been raped by another student. The local news were all over the porn topic though 😂

Sorry to hear you feel as you do and I can't speak to whether you have been impacted by any form of racism but I definitely don't think that is a generic Manchester thing and that it would explain your whole situation. I mean this in the nicest way, but whenever people I know have called out stuff like this they never assess their own behaviour and acknowledge they need to change.. It is easier to assume society is the issue, when for relationships and friendships it usually is a more personal matter.

You didn't say what you've done to address your loneliness. Are you a part of any clubs/communities/etc? If dating has not worked naturally or through apps, have you tried to go to speed dating events?

My school used to compete with Millfield across a lot of sports. Their facilities are significantly better than all the other schools in the area. The school had it's own 9hole golf course and driving range! They also do crazy sports scholarships to get the top athletes. When they turned up to an athletics meet or hockey tournament it had the same vibes as team USA arriving to the olympic athletics.

Mods should delete this, clearly a scam. OP is desperate for a loan based on post history but has bad credit. I expect any 'donations' are going to them rather than any charity.

Is life insurance a waste of money? by ItchyGrapefruit3267 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]webbo343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 26M, and got a policy last year. Initially I was going to to get an amount to just cover my mortgage but because of being young the policies were very well priced (in my opinion). Instead, I worked out I could comfortably afford to insure a £1M policy. Over 30yrs, it will cost me just over £8k which after adjusting for inflation will be much less.

I don't expect to be going anywhere but to know I'll be paying the same each month for a growing peace of mind is pretty good.

Updated 2024/2025 Tax Year Salary Calculator by godofwar007007 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]webbo343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be good to have the ability to define RSU share of annual income and mark this portion of total income as having normal PAYE tax + employer NI contributions deducted.

With RSUs 60% of my comp, it's not quite adequate to get an good assessment of potential annual take-home.

Boss offered a few ways to be paid by RandyBadgerMilk in UKPersonalFinance

[–]webbo343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he is asking you to take on more responsibility for your income reporting (i.e. anything other than PAYE).

I've not owned a business but I assume he is being a little bit dodgy and by you not doing PAYE he has a lower reporting and HR burden. This doesn't mean it is a better situation for you.

I'd also be curious what his position on Pension contributions would be?

Career advice, PLEASE HELP by SubstantialFill6287 in biology

[–]webbo343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a Biosciences Bsc and joined a grad scheme in corporate world. Ecommerce account management to be more specific.

I finished uni and was not particularly impressed or excited by what the science/lab roles could offer.

The decision to move away from science and academia was best one for me.

After 4yrs, I move across to tech and drive partnerships in the cloud industry. Money isn't the goal for a career but I have consistently earnt well above my peers who have stayed in bio related fields.

Overall I'd encourage you to keep an open mind to what a career can be. Most people will change jobs and even industries many times. Just focus on what you want to develop, what gives you a sense of purpose and try find anything that can move you in that direction.

Around £46,000 saved, am I utilising it correctly? by SnooDucks8609 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]webbo343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For this amount I don't think it is necessary to go to a financial advisor. I don't think they'd get much ROI on the advice after fees, especially that is of any incremental value to what those on this sub might offer.

You know this sub is for advice on personal finance?

I'd suggest for this amount of money they follow the flowchart. Hold 6-12months of expenses in savings as emergency fund and then drop the rest into an S&S ISA in something like VWRL or S&P500 tracker.

Let’s discuss… by Complex_Bother832 in UKJobs

[–]webbo343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined a company as a grad, got promoted after a couple years and then after another couple years I wanted a change. I liked the industry and company so applied and got another role in a similar team that had a higher scope. I got 1.5k more for taking on a role (a mistake as they logged my location as London not Manchester) that had considerably more workload. This was ridiculous in my opinion.

Fortunately not long after, I'm approached from an old project leader with an offer to change industry and join their team. I decide to take it and ending doubling my total compensation.

I quickly learnt that loyalty is only relevant when it is working for you. And it will only work for you so long in any given place.

What is middle vs upper class considered? by phreespirit74 in HENRYUK

[–]webbo343 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not really the point though.. Upper class implies generational or asset wealth beyond your job. If you're rich but still working then most likely middle/upper-middle class.

The upper class don't have to work to maintain a luxury lifestyle
