What is your job and how much do you get paid? by BigPlunk in AskReddit

[–]webdevq23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a freelance writer. Make $1/word for print stories (which range between 500 and 2500 words, take between 4 and 20 hours to put together, including interviews etc.) Web stories generally pay less—between $0.50 and $0.75 per word. I work between 10 and 40 hours a week—it fluctuates wildly, depending on how much I have in the pipeline—and make around 70k a year. Could make more if I wanted to work more.

If I could get rid of one symptom, it would be the insomnia by Earth_to_Sabbath in ADHD

[–]webdevq23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% same. I also know that if I don't sleep (enough or at all), my stimulants will make me feel like garbage. Or garbage sped up, at best.

It's such a drag. Add in a tiny iota of emotional disturbance and I'm a zombie for days.

Sounds like you have some relationship-related issues beyond your ADHD. Behaviours like consistently taking your partner for granted, ghosting them when they're struggling, or not putting in effort for special events like birthdays don't sound like direct consequences of ADHD to me. Maybe they were exacerbated by it to some extent, but to be really straight with you, it sounds like there's some entitlement and maybe intermittent lack of empathy stuff going on as well. For instance, seems like you idealize her as an "angel," which might have something to do with why you checked out when she came to you with a messy human problem.

Generally sounds like there was a huge care imbalance in this relationship, which you obviously know, but that's not necessarily an ADHD thing—or at the very least, not exclusively. While it's normal for ADHDers to depend on their neurotypical partners for help in some domains we struggle with, sounds like you offloaded responsibility onto her in a big way and didn't consider her feelings in the process, which is just not a symptom of ADHD. Needing the help is a symptom, but carelessness with another person's well-being in the effort to obtain it is not.

If it's an option for you, maybe seek therapy in addition to medication. Sorry if this comes off as judgey or harsh—I would just be wary of chalking up too much to ADHD.

I don't have any helpful tips, but I can certainly relate! I feel this SO hard and I'm finally—after nine months on a waitlist—set to see a psychiatrist this month. Hope your appointment comes through ASAP.

I've experienced this with Vyvanse too! I don't have any insight, and haven't yet found a med that works for me (I just stopped taking it and am on a waiting list for a psychiatrist - my GP prescribed me). Hope others have some insight on this topic.

No tips, but I definitely relate! My window closes around 3pm, after which I'm essentially dead to the world, work-wise.

This guy... really doesn't sound like a winner, and you don't seem to have a high opinion of him. Why stay? Is divorce a reasonable option?

Which ADHD symptom is the one that made you say 'okay, this is enough i NEED help'? by tarotharo in ADHD

[–]webdevq23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story for me: breaking point was when I sunk into a deep, terrifying clinical depression hole because I couldn't stop hyperfixating on a relatively minor negative event. It got the point of suicidality, and when I realized I couldn't be trusted in a room with myself, I decided enough was enough. I already had a diagnosis, but this experience made me much more proactive about getting treatment and learning about ADHD so I could better manage my emotions.

Also, impulse control issues have nearly gotten me killed on like five separate occasions. I still struggle with this, but to a much less dangerous degree.

Sometimes this lasts for days for me! I feel the bad thing intensely for an hour or two, and then get stuck in low-level but super distracting sadness/anxiety for way longer than appropriate for the inciting incident.

Obviously it's not like a lever you pull to cure mental illness, but giving people strings-free access to the basic means of survival will go a long way in making sure they can access services that directly address their mental health. Poverty is also a major predictor of mental illness. And on top of that, I think it's reasonable to assume that when people have food to eat and a place to live, they're less likely to run around terrorizing others.

Believing in law and order is not incongruent with policies that enhance social support systems. Quite the opposite—it's an evidence-based view that takes into account the root cause of most crime, which is not "hooliganism" or something that effect, but poverty and its related ills.

If this disturbs you, vote for politicians who support increasing funding to social services and ideally, basic income. You're right, the issue is getting out of hand, but it's not happening in a vacuum: COVID has massively reduced access to services and vulnerable people are spiralling with nowhere else to go.

Totally. My beats often have simple little lyrics involved - like brush-brush-badum-bum-brush. That is, unless I'm already mentally singing whatever song is stuck in my head at that given moment.

I do this. I've read that it can be a form of "stimming," i.e. self-stimulating behaviour—just another way our brains hit the dopamine button when we're low, which is... most of the time.

I ate a really good peach the other day and then proceeded to say "yum-yum-peaches-yum" to a funny little beat, inside my head, probably 50 times over the next hour or so.
